Booked my most recent return trip to Sapphire Village on VRBO, I’ve been to Sapphire Village too many times to count. I prefer the 1 bedroom over the studio units unless traveling alone. I sleep less then my wife and a studio makes it hard. I’ve had a room in every building except St Vincent at one time or another. I’ve always preferred the marina side buildings, Dominica and Saba. Finally during this last trip I booked into St Vincent and will add it to my favorites list. The upermost buildings, St Kitts and Barbados have the downside of a longer up hill walk back from the beach and a tougher parking situation. On the plus side they have their own little quiet pool and a shorter walk to Red Hook. Barbados is considered by some to have the best view. Half of St Kitts all studio floor plans do not have balconies. Dominica and Tobago are in the middle of the complex and all I recall about these is that I have a preference is for the upper floors. If you want to get an idea of the lay out there are some good site plan maps at sapphirevillage(dot)com. Click on the realtors link.
This resort property shold never be compared to a hotel since lots of the units are owner occupied full time and many others are rented out to residents on a long term basis. It was allowed to be built with way too few parking spaces and some residents had more then one car. They instituted a permit policy a few years back and the situation is much improved.
There are over 200 condos at Sapphire Village so there are 200 different décor packages, 200 different cleanliness standards, 200 different rates, 200 different etc. etc. etc. There is no central booking office that covers the entire property. Paradise Properties has an office on premise but it’s only open M-F in the day so be certain you know how you will access your unit if you arrive late. I have used Paradise Properties on more then one occasion and have no complaints. Some units have local agents, I have rented a few strictly using the internet and US Mail. I ask a lot of questions when dealing with an owner for the first time. I hate surprises and thankfully I’ve never had anything BAD happen. My units have been clean and comfortable; some have had great kitchens others not so great. About the worst experience I ever had was finding only 3 ice cubes upon my thirsty arrival.
The property was allowed to fall into disrepair since it was built in the 70’s. A few years ago they embarked on a capital improvement project and at last the hard work is finally paying off. Three of the 7 buildings are finished with a full exterior remodel. The other four are each ¾ done. The job is supposed to run another year so be sure to ASK if your building will be worked on during your stay!! They only work on one building at a time so the answer should be easy to come by.
The on-premise restaurant, The Grapevine is young and still trying to find its mark. I prefer the bar menu and I am told a new nightly budget special is doing well. A few reviewers call it expensive I say welcome to the Islands Mon.
There is a property owners association that has an office but they do little to NOTHING for renters of any type except sell laundry and dryer tokens during weekday operating hours. They also have an OK wireless signal in the near vicinity or if they are open you can sit in the AC. They also have a lending library for books and videos but that may just be for residents. If you don’t expect anything from them you will not be disappointed.
Before writing this I read all the reviews and I think a few people who wrote some of the tougher reviews are a bit confused with their expectations or other properties that have the name Sapphire. There is Sapphire Beach Resort and Marina, Crystal Cove at Sapphire and Sapphire House along with a whole lot of small time operators with one or two units that have Sapphire in the name.
So that’s the straight dope as best as I can give it. You may ask why I return so often to Sapphire Village. In no particular order - View –Breeze-Value-Beach-Beach Bar-Beach Bar Sunday Jam-Pretty Klip Bar-Pretty Kilp Pool-Dive-In Dive Shop – Did I mention the beach? –East End location - The View - proximity to Red Hook and St John Ferry – non-proximity to downtown – and the value -oh, and the beach.
Have Fun
