We have travelled and stayed in many 5 star resorts and Bluebeards is NOT one of them though we knew this whe we booked and were not disappointed, if anything, Bluebeard's plesantly surprised our expectations. We reserved the Bluebeard's resort through RCI after an extensive search in the Caribbean for any openings. We booked knowing full well that this place would likely be dated in the decor, and it was, though it was perfectly clean. It is located up on the hill offering a great view of the bay and of downtown. You are easily within walking distant of the Yacht Haven Grande shopping areas and of course downtown. Though rent a car to get around everywhere else - Taxi's are expensive. We rented and have no issues.
The SUITE
We booked a 1 bedroom suite that slept 4 privately - this came with a kingsized bed, sofa couch, kitchen and a great deck that overlooked Long bay, where all the cruise ships dock. The deck had a plastic table and 4 chairs that served our needs perfectly. Each morning we watched the cruise ships enter the bay -then every evening we relaxed with some wine and local rum starring out over the bay. The view was probably the best feature of the room. The suite easily met our expectations.
The Restaurants
We only eat at the Pool bar at Bluebeard;s Castle and they offered the usual burger choices which met our needs at the time.
The other, highly recommended, restaurants onsite looked like decent places and lots of great reviews for them thouhg we believed over priced and asked the locals for other options and truly appreciated all their selections. Here is a list of restaurants that you should eat at...
WIKKED - Great lunch and dinner options at reasonable rate. Great atmosphere that we enjoyed. Located in Yacht Haven Grande.
EPERNAY - located in Frenchtown - Great food & great prices - only seats ~18 people. Loved it.
CUZZINS - You MUST eat here!! Huge servings, great atmosphere and low prices....downtown.
The GREENHOUSE - downtown location with lots of room - decent food though packed full of Cruise ship tourists.. fun for a night.
AVOID 'Benni Iguanna's Sushi' - unless you enjoy being ripped off for surly service, small portions, and expensive sushi that they automatically add 18% tip...we wanted to give a negative tip....
BEACHES
Meagen's Beach - It is a decent beach, clear water, calm, though we felt a waste of money. Go to Drake's seat to look at the beach and surrounding scenery though try to avoid paying the ~$18 for 4 people to enter the beach.
Coki Beach - Avoid unless you have kid's. It is a small and busy beach with locals selling you everything they can. This is right next to Coral World, so therefore full of Cruise ship people...
Secret Harbour - A must. Relaxing, quiet, calm and great snorklelling. We went here a few times and were not disappointed. We swam with Turtles and tons of fish in the reef that is only 20-30 feet off shore.
Bluebeard's Beach Resort beach - Free though you must pay $5 for a lounger on the beach, unless you stay right at that beach villa resort. Quiet beach, not many people, poor snorkelling. Great to read a book and relax.
The shopping, ahh whatever. They target the Cruise ship people who get caught up in the 'atmosphere' and are willing to pay anything for Jewelery and expensive watches. Don't get me wrong, some of the prices are great on perfumes and clothing though KNOW the jewelery/watches you want to buy beforehand and research otherwise you may get ripped off!!! We did not go for the shopping so we just laughed watching all the people rush downtown to 'go shopping'..
Overall St Thomas was relaxing and we had a great time. Would we go back, No. Too many other places to see. Would we recommend St Thomas to you, Yes - just try to avoid the tourist traps and you will enjoy your trip that much more and will come back completely relaxed.
