“not what I was expecting”

El Greco Hotel

Mar 2, 2008

I had to stay in downtown Nassau for 2 days. We looked on the internet and saw that the Greco Hotel had good reviews so we choose to stay there. The minute we arrive at the hotel I knew we have made a bad decision. The room that they gave us was horrible, there were big red stains under the mattress. The carpet was disgusting. They gave us another room, but it was also dirty. We then ran to the British Colonial Hilton, we ended staying there for the 2 days.
I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. If you are going to Nassau for vacation don't hesitate and stay either at one of the hotels at Cable Beach or go to Paradise Island.

“Good deal for Nassau hotels”

El Greco Hotel

Jan 5, 2008

The El Greco offers good deal for hotels in Nassau:

The location is great: Getting around has no problems: it is in the heart of downtown Nassau, you can walk to the ferry dock to Paradise Island (5 min). Or taking a public bus right at the door to Cable beach, which costs only 1 dollar. If you need a taxi, it is also ever so easy! One bonus point, the hotel is not right in the shopping zone, and a public beach is right across the street, so it’s mostly is nice and quiet.

The service is great: the owner/manager is lovely, and is very helpful to her guests. Well, every staff in the hotel is nice and friendly. The hotel has 24-hour front desk service and a security guard as well. So you feel safe in the hotel.

The Price: The price is good, with no hidden prices: it includes all taxes, free telephone calls to the US and Canada (this, however, I never tried) and local calls. Continental breakfast, which is nice and fresh.

The rooms: Some rooms are better than the others. Good ones are pretty good. I wish there is a fan in the bathroom though. The humidity can be troublsome.

And the restaurant next door is GREAT! It offers great local food, great service, with reasonable price. I mean, no restaurants in Nassau is cheap, but the food there is far better than Poop Deck, or Senor Frogs, for example, and has great atmosphere. Also, the portion of food is huge! So you can share with a friend. Don’t forget the happy hours! Not having to take a taxi to a restaurant can save you a lot of money!

The only complain I have is the noise caused by other guests: The rooms are squared around the pool and lounge area, so when some rotten kids jumped into the pool and screamed for the first two nights when we were there, it felt the kids were screaming right to my face and woke me up. And the parents said “I am going to the room now, so just shout out to me when you need me.” That was 11:00 pm! I complained to the front desk and they tried to calm the kids down, did not really help. I feel bad for the front desk guy, he can’t do much. The parents themselves got no manner, how do you expect good behavior from the kids? And the next night, we got a group of 12 people, who decided to have a party right there. Wow, I felt being part of the party while lying on my bed. Turning up the volume of my TV does nothing to burry the noise. Thankfully, after the security guard told them to keep it low, they stopped and went out. I don’t think it is the hotel’s fault in either situation, but the settings of the hotel may “prompted” stupid behaviors from these rude people.

People in the Bahamas are very nice and friendly; we never felt being fooled or anyone tried to rip us off. To start it right, you need to find the right hotel. El Greco made our stay pleasant.

“Terrible - Very Shady Place”

On arrival we saw a guest leaving with a prostitute, but our friends were already there and it was too late in the day to change hotels. While our friend's room wasn't too bad, ours looked like some kind of ghetto apartment. We didn't want to sit on the "lounge" room couch because it looked dirty. Our sink was backed up and the toilet wouldn't flush properly. However, the proprietor was friendly.

I am typically a pretty lenient reviewer. I have backpacked in over 40 countries and this was one of the sketchier places I have stayed. The problem is, at that price range there aren't many better options in Nassau. We stayed at the Days Inn next door during the following weekend (Nassau was a stopover on the way to Eleuthera), and the experience wasn't much better (ants, poor service, extremely outdate room, no shower curtain). My general advice is to avoid Nassau unless you plan to stay in a large resort and like that kind of trip.

It was magnificent I loved it.
They have a very complimentary breakfast.
They also have great service.
The people couldn't be nicer.

We had the opportunity to stay on Paradise Island and wished we had never left the El Greco. From the moment we arrived until we left, everyone made us feel welcomed and at home.

Definitely 5 stars!!!

“Comfy but...”

El Greco Hotel

I stayed at the El Greco in July after reading the reviews. This was my first trip to Nassau and was skeptical since I was travelling alone.

The neighbourhood was sketchy, (there was a beat up building right next to it and had some shady characters hanging out there), though location was convenient. It is a 5 minute walk to downtown Nassau on Bay street and from Fish Fry. I had the conch fritters there (which were okay..nothing to write much about.)

The Hotel has complementary phone service to US and Canada which i used all the time, and drink machine ( drinks are 1 dollar). The jitney stop is just outside the hotel and it s1 dollar. No need for a cab.

The room was clean looking, A/C worked well and there was cable TV. My only complaint with the room was I developed bug bites ( yes..i used insect repellant), and the itching lasted about two days. So i'm not sure about the bed!!!!

For the price i paid per nite ($140) for a single room with King size bed, i think i got what i expected.
