Before I had stayed at the Graycliff I had heard really mixed reviews. After two nights there I understand why. The colonial house and gardens are charming and I can understand why some visitors may be won over by this but the Graycliff is also one of the worst hotels I have ever visited. The service is shocking – we would routinely wait an hour to get drinks or food and sometimes we felt we were in some kind of comedy sketch surrounded by totally incompetent staff. There was never any hint of management – on one occasion after being served a pot of luke-warm tea we actually went into the kitchens to get hot water ourselves because we couldn’t find anyone to serve us. We were continually ripped off by cab drivers that were booked by the hotel who seemed to charge whatever they wanted for journeys. It’s a real shame that the Graycliff is so dreadful because it could be a really fabulous place – instead it’s shabby and uncared for. The only upside of our stay there was the lovely atmosphere in the evenings where the extremely talented singer and pianist (Tanya I think) plays all evening while guests have drinks pre- and post- dinner. But even she couldn’t make up for the utter disappointment we felt throughout our stay here.
