Bahamas is a very expensive place and we were lucky to find a hotel that is centrally located and was reasonably priced. I am not going to say that this place is the Sheridan or anything, but for the price and the location (and really how much time are you going to spend in your room) you can't go wrong. The rooms are clean and cool and some overlook the harbour, which is great. There is a pool and a hot tub as well. I have no complaints about the cleanliness of the room, and the guys helping with the luggage are great and would hold your bags if your room wasn't ready so you can explore. The hotel is right beside a marketplace area, the straw market sells the usual stuff (t-shirts, pipes and the like) but there are also some great one of a kind shops like Ocean which makes beautiful soaps and lotions that make a great gift. There are some good restaurants, just make sure that you have about an hour or more to eat because in the Bahamas if you are in a hurry you are the only one. We spent two nights at the Port Lucaya and the rest of the time of a liveaboard on the water, and it was a nice place to lay our heads. In the evenings in the square there are cheap drinks at rum runners (2 corona for 5 bucks). The police station is right across the street and are always helpful if you need to take a bus into town. I was weary at first to take the bus but it is the best. It is not like North American buses, these buses wait at stops and then go when they have some passengers. Don't bother going to the International Marketplace, it is mostly empty because of the destruction of some of the hotels by one of the hurricanes. The area is pretty dismal, I would suggest spending time around the Porty Lucaya area. But definitely, if you have some time, go down to the City Market (grocery store) and get some snacks. It is only a buck to ride the bus and worth the trip, you can get some great pringles and other snack foods. If you want beach just walk across the street through the Sheridan and voila!! We did a lot of off the beaten track stuff so please email if you want more info.
