The Westin/Sheraton at Our Lucaya was simply "nice". Here's our take....
RESORT: Upon arrival I was disappointed by the misleading hotel description, as the amenities are shared between both properties and the hotel was clearly in need of renovation.
Nevertheless, we instantly jumped at the moment to enjoy Bahama Mamas, a beautiful beach and relaxing winding pools without kids. It was nice!
SERVICE: We read the extensive negative reviews, but were open and realistic about the location. Similar to Hawaii, Caribbean, etc., the pace is much slower and the local economy is weak. We met many wonderful people!
FOOD: New to the Bahamas, we were prepared with a list of "the best" dining from other vacationers and reviews. However, in pursuit of local digs and the fresh catch, we found much of it to be very American food. Don't expect atmosphere or ambiance. Here's our favorites:
RUM RUNNERS: small outdoor bar/hot spot for locals and vacationers near the square. Excellent $10 lobster (fried or broiled) and delicious $7 fried conch! Our favorite spot day or night!
BILLY JOE'S CONCH SHACK: small shack on the beach, at the Sheraton's edge. If you like ceviche, the conch salad made to order is a must have! Also, the steamed conch is excellent. Live music, party atmosphere on the water. A very Jimmy Buffet experience! We loved it!
ZORBAS: a good, consistent breakfast spot in the marketplace and 50-70% less than the resort
CARIBBEAN CAFE: Read great reviews, ITS A NO.
FAT NEPHEW: Sad to report it is no longer.
BISHOPS BONE FISHING LODGE: Near Gold Rock Beach at Lucaya National Park. We never made it....heard it's fantastic.
CLUB MED: On site bar/grill on the beach, cute marine atmosphere, as expected.
ACTIVITIES: As avid boaters, we did not partake in the jet skiing or oceanic tours. However, we did consider a little touristy fun with a bon fire experience at the Ritz (if it was via boat, we would have gone), Bahama Mama booze and/or dinner cruise (not offered daily), off shore fishing (too costly).
In summary, while we found it lacking in the "resort" end, the beaches, pools, cool island drinks, and my baby made it a VERY NICE vacation. Next year, maybe CANCUN, ST. LUCIA, who knows? ;)
