“Best Vacation Ever!”

Sammy T's Beach Resort

5 of 5 stars
Connecticut
May 16, 2008

My husband and I and our 15 year old neice spent a week at Sammy T's in April '08. It was like staying with family and friends.

With only seven cottages, there was never more than 12-15 people at the resort at any one time. We had the most beautiful beach to ourself where we found our own conch shells to take home. There is not too much to do on the island but that is just what we wanted. We rented a car for the day, explored a bit and had lunch at another hotel.

Cottage was very comfortable and cozy, no stove only microwave but who wants to cook on vacation. A toaster would have been nice though.

Sammy and his staff was very accomodating to our needs and very friendly. Dogs Kaluah, Rusty and Paco were fun to have around.

Only downside...we got bored with the food, so next time we'll explore local eateries.

If you want to totally relax and regenerate, this is the place to go. We will return to Cat Island and Sammy T's as soon as we can.

It was really the best vacation!

“Loved Sammy T's on Cat Island”

Finally found the time to write a review of Sammy T's and Cat Island. Cannot say enough. The bungalows were perfect, food was great, beach was awesome, snorkeling was great. We hope to go back next April. Cat Island, thank goodness, is an undiscovered gem. With one road running north and south, and plenty of beaches to explore and enjoy, for us it was paradise. We've attached some pictures. We would recommend Cat Island - and Sammy T's - to anyone who wants a nice, quiet getaway with some of the nicest people you'll ever meet.

“Went Looking for relaxation and found it!!!!”

Sammy T's Beach Resort

May 8, 2008

I had read reviews about Sammy T's and was still a bit skeptical of all the great feedback so I decided to see for myself. I booked my trip and traveled solo. Can I say WONDERFUL. I have never been so pleasantly surprised. Sammy and his Staff were gracious and accommodating. The pace was nice and easy. The beach was beautiful and peaceful. One day I had the beach to myself most of the day. If your looking for the kind a of place were there are activities going on 24/7 along with a lot of people, this is not the place. If your looking for a place to remember what if feels like to relax and read a good book or just get lost in your thoughts Sammy T's is the place. Incidentally ladies I felt perfectly comfortable here on my solo trip. I am already planning to go back next year.- Cincinnati ,Ohio

“Peace Like No Other”

Sammy T's Beach Resort

5 of 5 stars
Omaha, Nebraska

4/4 found this review helpful

I stayed at Sammy T's from 6/30/07-7/7/07.

It was the best vacation I have ever had. And I have been on many, many vacations.

The weather was perfect - sunshine every day.

The beach was perfect. I had read review after review stating that I would be "the only one on the beach" and - I was!

The peace I experienced was like no other. It was a total absence of the world.

I am female and went there by myself. I felt completely safe the entire time I was there.

The bungalows are great. I was in #5 and it was the perfect size for one or two people. Refrigerator, microwave, enough plates, glasses and flatware for two. TV for DVD's. No phone.

Lots of lizards. Really cute and harmless. Ask George for a tour of the gardens. He is a wealth of knowledge.

The bedroom was air conditioned, a blessing as it is quite warm. But if you are out in the heat you don't notice how hot it is until you come out of the air conditioning.

Take sun block. 30spf usually does it for me but I could have used 50.

Take insect repellent if you are out after sunset. It is a must.

Sammy is the best. Carnetta, George, Andrew and the rest of the staff are amazing. If you need anything, just ask.

The food is the best I have ever had. The broiled grouper, baked parmesan grouper, fried battered conch and the lobsters are incredible. The pigeon peas and grits are amazing sides. Thank you Carnetta and kitchen staff!

I am hungry for it right now - yum!!!

The staff will find you if you have not given your evening meal order by 3pm.

I only ate the evening meal. It ran me about $33 with a glass or two of wine. A great price for the delicious meals. The menu is verbal. I never asked about prices.

I took snacks for breakfast and lunch as well as coffee.

Stop and buy water on your way to the resort. The island water is salty. (Drink lots of water.)

If Danny is your airport pick-up, he will tell you all you need to know. He is a super guy.

Sammy has kayaks, floaties, snorkel gear, DVD’s and bicycles.

Take a bike ride to Arthur's Town and points north. It is a great way to see the island and visit with the locals who are very gracious.

The grocery store north of Arthur’s Town in Orange Creek has the biggest selection.

Rent a car for a day and go see the Hermitage. It is very inspiring.

The Pacific side of the island is desolate and has a rugged beauty but you don't have to go there to feel like you have visited the island

I visited a couple of other resorts while I was there but Sammy's surpasses them all.

There are a few things to do on Cat Island like fish, snorkel and

Scuba.

Do not expect nightlife, casinos or other worldly things.

To me Cat Island is about peace and relaxation.

I spent most of my time on Sammy's Beach. I did not need to go anywhere else.

Everything I needed was right there.

I never tired of watching the waves or listening to the surf.

But that is all I wanted to do.

I would recommend Sammy T's for anyone who needs total peace, relaxation, great food and a wonderful staff.

Oh, take some doggie treats for Rusty and Kaluha.

Thank you Sammy. I hope to return.

“Perfect Island Retreat”

Sammy T's Beach Resort

Jul 28, 2007
1/1 found this review helpful

My husband and I celebrated our 10 yr. anniversary with a trip to Sammy T's. It was our first trip without our children and it was the perfect escape. We chose this spot because of it's proximity to the east coast, yet it still felt completely tropical and had clear and blue, blue water. Sammy T's totally lives up to the other reviews. Sammy is a wonderful person and we immediately felt like we were old friends visiting his home. His aim is to make sure you are comfortable and have all that you need. The beach is great - white sand and clear water with snorkeling at the one end and neat rock formations to explore on the other. For the entire time we were there (6 nights) we were the ONLY ones on the beach! We snokeled and my husband took the kayak out. We were only visited by the dogs, who also added much to the experience (and I am generally not a "dog person"). They are very well behaved and very sweet. We borrowed Sammy's bikes and took a bike ride and found another totally private beach to explore. The thing I most loved about Cat Island is the feeling of safety and freedom to explore. When we ventured out in the rental car Sammy said to feel free to go wherever we wanted to and swim on any beach we wanted to! There are no "sketchy" areas to be concerned about. Everyone waves and honks to you as you're out on the road. The Hermitage was neat to see and we ate a late lunch at the Blue Bird Restaurant nearby. We visited the Greenwood and spent some time on the beach there, but really we were completely content to just be at Sammy T's. If you want total relaxation and peace this is the place to be. The island is so un-developed I was out of luck when I wanted to buy souvenirs for our 2 little boys. Instead we found some neat shells and bought them some cookies (from the UK) in a little grocery store for them. It was great to get away from all the materialism of the states and other touristy destinations. Sammy does have a great collection of movies and games (playing cards, scrabble, etc.) and books. I enjoyed reading Sidney Poitier's autobiography while I was there. He grew up in the area just down the road from Sammy's. We ate all our meals at Sammy's except the one mentioned. All of our food (and the rum punch!) was great and we both cleaned our plates every meal! We did bring some of our own food (snacks, things for light lunches or breakfast) because the food is expensive as they have to ship everything in. It was also such a pleasure to get to know George, the groundskeeper and Andrew, the pastry chef. Again, there was an immediate connection with them and you really get a sense of the place by getting to know local folks. I also enjoyed hearing Andrew singing out of the kitchen as he baked and my husband enjoyed trying to catch huge sand crabs with George! The pool looked great, but we never got in it since the beach was so warm and clear!
All in all, it was a great trip and we were completely happy with our selection of get-aways. It was truly getting away from it all and allowed us to focus on each other and the natural beauty that exists on Cat Island. We're already starting to save so we can take our boys back one day!

One word of caution when using the telephone... if you use the calling card telephone, keep it short. I had no idea what the rates were, but was in for a shock when we got back and got the bill (it averaged about $7-8 per minute!)

Also, do give yourself plenty of time for connecting flights out of Nassau. We used Cat Island Air and it doesn't always depart as scheduled. Sammy was very helpful in making sure the plane would take off in time for us to make our flight out of Nassau, but it was tight (you have to go through 3 security checkpoints in Nassau! so give yourself plenty of time for this).
Hope this is helpful!
