We are a family of 5 - 2 adults and 3 children aged 11, 10 and 7. Having spent a week in Disneyworld we came to stay at Coral Sands for a bit of rest and relaxation. We found the hotel to be excellent but the prices to be very steep, but quickly discovered this is a theme of the island, not Coral Sands specifically.
Wherever you travel in the Bahamas get used to paying through the nose. We arrived at Nassau with a 4 hour wait until our connection to North Eleuthera, so took a cab to a nearby restaurant for lunch. The journey was roughly 3 minutes long and we were charged $25 ($5/head, even for a 7 year old). The same was true for the journey from North Eleuthera airport to the water front, for the boat trip across to harbour Island (though he charged less for the children), then for the taxi journey to Coral Sands. I had therefore shelled out more than $100 for 5 extremely short journeys and was feeling as if I had been fleeced before I had even got to the hotel (we are English so are probably a bit tight on the tipping front anyway!).
We had what Coral Sands call a Master Suite - 2 sizeable rooms with a door between them. Much better and more roomy accommodation than we had at the Grand Floridian in Disney. The room was very comfortable, with an amazing view of the gardens and the beach, albeit not as good as their Beach House. It was pretty quiet apart from one night when there was a beach party for a group staying at the hotel.
We found that towels were changed whenever we wished though we adhered to their request to be sensitive to the local environment by not changing towels too frequently.
The food was excellent, really very good indeed. We found this a theme over all the island (try the Landing for evening meals and its amazing cellar, and SipSip and Pink Islands beach cafe next door for lunch). By far the best culinary experiences we have had in the Caribbean. But you certainly pay for it. I have seen other reviews criticising Coral Sands for the cost of its food, but this is not unique to them - all restaurants and cafes charge pretty similar prices, but at least the standard is high. Expect to pay $40 for an evening main course. After the initial shock I just accepted it was going to be an expensive week and tried to blank out the prices.
I found the staff generally very pleasant and helpful, though there was a bit of a variety of attitudes. In general we found the restaurant staff excellent, particularly Tony and Angela. We found the front staff desk helpful but not particularly friendly. The beach guys were excellent, particularly after my 11year old daughter came across a barracuda while snorkelling out by the reef, after which they told her all about how harmless they are! We were occasionally offered drinks on the beach, but the visits by the waitress were not every day, and she only came around once on the days concerned.
Coral Sands doesn't appear to get good marks for families with small children - certainly for children aged high single figures/low double figures it was excellent as long as they like beaches, because the pink sand beach and sea are out of this world - ours were happy to spend all day every day there.
We would happily return there, though be prepared for a slightly painful journey. But then again, if it was easier to get to harbour Island, it wouldn't be so beuatiful and unspoiled...
