“Beautiful, but lacking in personal service”

Coral Sands Hotel

May 22, 2008

Harbour Island and Coral Sands are very beautiful, no doubt. The hotel is clean, the rooms cool and comfortable, the bar areas, restaurant, pool area and beach are all pristine and lovely. My only complaint is that there was a definite lack of personal and attentive service from the bar and wait staff, in particular.
For the amount of money one spends to stay at a place of that caliber, you would expect that they would be stumbling over themselves to make sure you have everything and anything you could need or want. For instance, on several occasions, we were sitting outside on the patio area just enjoying the breeze and view and we would have LOVED to have had a drink, but NOBODY came over to ask us if we wanted one. You'd think, at almost $10/drink they'd be anxious to offer you as many as you want, but nobody was available to take our order. If we wanted a drink we had to get up and walk into the hotel itself to the bar and order it ourselves. What happened to poolside service? Same on the beach -- how nice it would have been not to have to get up and walk all the way up the steps to the beach bar in order to get a refreshing drink...how nice it would have been, even once, for someone to come down and take our order...
I also heard the words, "I'm sorry, No" a bit to often. For instance (again with drinks...no, I'm not a lush!) we were waiting for our taxi at 11:15 on the day of our leaving, and I really wanted one more Miami Vice from the bar (delicious, by the way) and went up to the bartender who was standing there IDLE and asked him for a coke for my traveling partner and a Miami Vice for me. He said he couldn't make me a drink at that bar right then, but that I'd have to go down to the beach bar and get one. WHY? Why if he's got the stuff there (which he did) couldn't he spend 2 minutes of his IDLE time to make me a drink, and earn some money for his hotel?? WHy was that such an imposition on him? I was annoyed.
One more complaint -- the fruit platter for $11 was nothing special. The fruit wasn't even ripe and juicy -- we bought Bahamian fruit from a local vendor on one of our jaunts and enjoyed the most delectable fruit...I specifically asked why he doesn't supply the resorts with his yummy fruit -- he says they get their fruit mostly from the states! WHY???
Anyway, despite these complaints, I did enjoy the facilities and the beach is the prettiest I've ever seen. I just would have liked to have been pampered a bit more, especially at those prices.

Certainly one of the most beautiful beaches I have been to throughout the world. Staff is responsive yet unobtrusive. I have traveled to the Bahamas frequetly but it is my first trip to Harbour Island and loved the relaxed pace. Dinner on the porch with the lovely breezes overlooking the ocean was absolutely heavenly. Would return in a heartbeat.

“Amazing stay at Coral Sands”

Coral Sands Hotel

We recently stayed at the coral sands for a wedding and were extremely impressed. Harbour island is an incredible place in general and the coral sands was a great place to enjoy it. Our room had a gorgeous ocean view and was very clean and modern. The hotel beach was absolutely gorgeous and well maintained. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. The food and bar were very good, but were quite expensive (as is everything on Harbour island). There is no gift shop, but the pink sands across the street has some really nice stuff that is worth checking out. There are quite a few additional service charges on the room, so make sure you are prepared for that.

“We expected much more.........”

Coral Sands Hotel

2 of 5 stars

We expected much more than it finaly was, compared to other
places in the Caribbean and Central America we have visited during the last years.

There was a significant lack of personal service !
The staff was ok but not more.
Somebody from "Coral Sands" management should have a look and see how the management at "The ....." on Harbour Island handles there place! We liked to stay there !

The whole 10 days we stayed at Coral Sands ,we did NOT see a manager. Nobody from the management realy looked how things are going, nobody asked how we liked it or if everything was ok.
No welcome drink, no walking around during dinner time to see howe the guests feel.

So the pool was crowded with minimum 15-20 children and there parents every day ,so that there was no chance for others to have a nice swim during the day. Unfortunately the weather was very windy and a bit cold so that the (realy beautiful) beach was not a place to stay for longer. A relaxing swim in the pool would have been nice.
But nobody from the management cared abut this.

The breakfast was absolutely not worth the money!

When we checked out the evening before we left ,there was no friendly good by from somebody of the management or even not from the girl at the reception.
Because we had to leave at 7:30 AM in the morning ,I asked for a small breakfast before we had to go but got only to hear:
"...there is a pot of coffee at the bar" .....not more.!

So it is not a place I would recomend, even the rooms are nice and the property as a whole looks OK.

“Beautiful!”

Coral Sands Hotel

Feb 18, 2008

We just returned from a week at the Coral Sands Resort on Harbor Island. The place is magnificent! We loved our room. We stayed in a ground level junior suite in the Lacaya building. The view was wonderful with a manicured lawn, palm trees and flowering shrubs outside our terrace with the ocean in the background.
Foot paths to the beach, the beach bar and the main diningroom were well lit at night and signs everywhere so you knew where you were going. The staff were friendly and willing. They helped with securing a golf cart to explore the island and had maps of the island as well as stores and other restaurants. I wanted to see the infamous "lone tree" and all I had to do was ask and they directed me right to where it was located.
It takes a land taxi, a water taxi and another land taxi to get to the resort, but it was an adventure and the drivers and porters are so helpful with the luggage and getting in and out of the vehicles and boat.
The dining room meals are quite expensive, but a dining experience. Less expensive dining can be had at the many other places on the island. i.e. Arthur's Bakery or the Deli for breakfast, the Sip Sip or Harbor Inn for lunch.
We had our travel agent secure a small fridge in our room ahead of time and purchased some groceries for small meals in our room. Just have to remember that everything shuts down on Sundays. If you come in on a Saturday, rent your golf cart and get groceries first thing. We will remember that next time.
The pink sand beaches were awe inspiring! The beach is raked early in the morning, thatched shade umbrellas, beach loungers, boogy boards etc. are all available for guests free of charge. Bar service comes down to the beach if you need drinks.
We will never forget the great service, wonderful rooms and pink sand beach at the Coral Sands. Also the people of Harbor Island and Eleuthera are the friendliest and most helpful people I have ever met in my travels.
