Where to start is the question. Have never been to Mexico before and my wife and I had a chance to visit the town of Loreto with some friends and we all booked a week stay at the Las Cabanas de Loreto; a cozy small property with 4 plus cabanas about 30 yards from the Sea of Cortez. Again, having never been to Mexico before and all the myths that come from word of mouth(ie. don't drink the water) were all busted. The people in the town were as friendly as could be, knowing that we didn't speak much Spanish. The close proximity to the water for recreational needs and the incredible flaura and fauna of the desert were truly a must see.
The family that runs Las Cabanas de Loreto were very professional from the beginning stages of planning this vacation to the time they said "adios" as the van sadly took us back to the airport. We were able to switch days prior to our trip to accomodate our travel needs. We were emailed weather reports just days before our trip to know what to and not to bring for clothes. As we arrived they gave us a lowdown of the town and the hot spots to check out, had booked some of our recreational events ahead of time, told us the great restaurants to eat at ( they were all awesome, especially the fish taco stand), all while sucking down a pitcher of Margaritas. We used the bikes on the property to ride around town whenever we wanted (unless of course some of the other guests were using them) or kick back in the hot tub or lounge by the pool with a good book while soaking it all in.
The town of Loreto is not a very touristy spot for foreign travelers, as I have been told and by what I observed, and it does have its share of poverty, but the grounds of Las Cabanas de Loreto is like a diamond in the rough. And if this was what my first experience of Mexico was like, I think I'll be heading back South of the border, if not to a new destination, then back to Las Cabanas de Loreto.
