“Enjoyed our stay-great location”

I accompanied my husband on a business trip to Monterrey. We booked reservations for the Gran Ancira last minute using suggestions from Trip Advisor when our reservations at another hotel fell through. We were very happy with our stay at the Gran Ancira. We were traveling with our 5-year old daughter and my husband’s colleague. The staff was very nice and many went out of their way to help us with suggestions for restaurants and sightseeing for me and my daughter. The hotel is in a great location within walking distance to many attractions (museums, Macro Plaza, etc.) They have a small outdoor swimming pool which my daughter loved and was great since the weather was very hot (usually 100 F during the day). They also have a very good restaurant in the lobby which offers both buffet and an a la carte menu. I highly recommend the crema de poblano soup (delicious!). Our room was very spacious, clean, and comfortable. I could see how some reviewers think the furnishings are outdated: our furniture, carpet, and bathroom were all newly updated, but the comforter and bed linens were a few years old. Still, the room was fine and we were very happy with it. Our friend who was staying on another floor had a completely newly remodeled room with great new bed with down comforter, etc. So, it may just depend on which floor/room you get. We also choose an “Executive Floor-EP bottler service” option when booking which cost an additional $15. The Executive Floor option means that you should get a room on the “executive” 5th floor (supposedly nicer rooms), free wireless internet, free continental breakfast (cereal, fruit, toast, cheese plate, meat plate, fresh juice, and coffee are available), and cocktail hour (sodas, wine, cocktails, and appetizers). The continental breakfast and cocktail hour take place in a lounge on the executive floor only accessible to those who add this option. We took full advantage of breakfast and cocktail hour. However, all rooms have free high speed internet access (not wireless, cables are provided), and you could always opt for the $119 pesos breakfast buffet that other reviewers on here rave about. So, that could be a good option instead of the “Executive Floor” service if you don’t want to pay the extra money.

“Old fashioned and a bit worn”

Gran Ancira

2 of 5 stars
Barueri, Brazil

(This is no longer a Radisson)
Rooms are dominated by a large bed with not a lot of room for much else.
Service is a bit sporadic and slow but generally without major problems.
The gym is a definate plus with newer treadmills and cross trainers. Outside pool is rather small.
The area around is dominated by a number of gentlemens clubs but the shopping walking street is very close by.
Area seems safe enough all thoug not very interesting.

“The place to stay in Monterrey for tourist or business”

Gran Ancira

5 of 5 stars
Austin, Tx
Jan 15, 2008

We stayed here as part of a tour package and absolutely loved it. The location has got to be the best in Monterrey for tourists. On one side is a pedestrian mall area. Steps away are wonderful art museums, the catherdral, the plaza, and a wonderful old neighborhood with cobblestone streets.

The food at the hotel was GREAT! Be sure to try the cream of jalapeno soup. Delicious. Staff were friendly and courteous. Only problem (very minor) was that coffee in room was not restocked one day.

I highly recommend both this hotel and Monterrey as an interesting tourist destination. Go to Bishop's Palace, horsetail falls, "El Rey de Cabrito" to eat goat, art galleries galore.

“This is not a Radisson”

Gran Ancira

2 of 5 stars
Chihuahua, Mexico
Jan 2, 2008

I have stayed here for many times, as my secretary books the hotel (maybe because it is the only one she knows in Monterrey). Despite the grandeur of the architecture and common areas and the good food service, the rooms are very outdated, noisy and require immediate attention from Radisson because the furniture is dated and worn out, there is this "old house" smell and some of the rooms are awfully small that they only have a double bed and no more. As I have read some reviews of other people regarding blood in the carpet, I will never come back to this place.

Besides, I have discovered the othe Radisson in Monterrey, the Casa Grande, in Valle Oriente, which is, for me, the best well kept secret in Monterrey: new, big rooms, CLEAN, competitive rates and LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!

“Fantastic stay.”

Houston

I reserved a few rooms at the Gran Ancira, site unseen, for a long weekend for about 10 people. I'd say the reviews were pretty accurate; while not first-class, we really enjoyed the charm of the older hotel & its staff. Accomodations (bathrooms, beds, linens, etc.) were more than suitable, just not 5 star. Location was great for sight seeing & wandering around - especially to get down to Barrio Antigua at night. I'd like to apologize to the staff for our 4 am piano jam session in the lobby on our last night!

Great value for a very above average hotel. I would have no hesitation staying again.
