We just returned from a week at the Acamar Beach Hotel in Caleta. We chose this location because we didn't want to stay on the Bay strip with the towering hotels, noisy bars and clubs, which is more reminiscent of Miami Beach.
Caleta is gorgeous and the hotel was very clean and the staff were friendly and spoke enough fractured English to make themselves understood. We didn't stay in the famous room 507 but we did have a beautiful ocean view, large terrace with kitchenette and a 20-litre bottle of purified water, fruit and a bottle of wine compliments of the hotel, which was a very nice touch. Incidentally, all the "07" rooms are large.
Caleta is very close to the cliff divers (a show well worth seeing) and only a short bus ride from The Zoccalo -- a great place to eat and wander around in the evening. And, yes, you can flag down the buses right outside the hotel -- or anywhere -- just hold on to your spine and neck as these "buses" are more like tin cans on wheels and the drivers are crazy!
We have been to Playa Del Carmen and Puerto Vallarta but Acapulco is by far the most picturesque. And Caleta is "real" Acapulco. If you want to see Acapulco in all its splendour, take "The Acaray" boat cruise. We took the 4:30 - 7:00 p.m. cruise which included the magnificent sunset.
The weekends are busy with noisy Mexican tourists and the hotel could use a bar but there is La Cabana right next door, which serves decent food and drinks.
It was scorching hot and very humid every day but was very pleasant when the fierce sun went down. We didn't see our Sunquest rep the entire trip and did feel somewhat stranded.
An all-inclusive would do well in Caleta as there isn't too much to do after 9 p.m. We took the bus several times to Zoccalo or to the Strip.
Quite a few of the Torontonians in our hotel stayed for 2-4 weeks. For us, 1 week was just right.
