Hotel Mercurio

We stayed here last week for 7 nights. I wasn't going to write a review but when I read the last review, I was angered at how the reviewer misrepresented this place. So here's my take on it.

First of all, if you're staying in the old town (which I much prefer) you won't find any 5 star american hotels; if that's what you need, stay up at the hotel zone in the north end.

Mercurio is not the ritz but the owners try very hard to make it comfortable. It is certainly not deserving of the criticism given in the last review.

Room: I would describe it as basic but cosy and charming. From the pictures of other places in the area, it looks very similar.

Great features:
Courtyard is very relaxing and beautiful for hanging around during the day, breakfast is fantastic ( and I mean fantastic!!), price is good value, location is the best of all the gay hotels (at least for us since we spent most of our time in the old town), 2 minutes to the beach, staff are friendly, internet and voip service was very convenient for dealing with the airline, AC and hot water worked well, fridge and room safe is convenient, , having room next to the courtyard was good for daytime
sunning (but not for nighttime sleep).

Annoyances: I wish they would rethink putting a big screen TV right outside a room window. The noise carries into the room and they turn it on from 8am to 10:30pm.
The bed mattress was a bit too firm for me. It may have just been my room because other guests told me theirs was ok. In all fairness to them I should have discussed it with them but chose to put up with it instead. It wasn't that big a deal to me.

Overall: I would recommend this hotel based on location and value alone, but its many other features make it a sure bet to pick.

If you like to sleep in past 8 am, beware of rooms 105 and 106 for noise as the back of the TV (where the speakers face) is a few feet from the room window.

“Great staff and location”

This is a small basic hotel on a side street off the busy Olas Altas area and close to Los Muertos Pier. Due to my own erratic travel pattern I had the opportunity to stay in three different rooms over the course of two weeks; from the smallest (#101) to one of the largest (#207) as well as one in between (#304). All rooms were impeccably clean but I would definitely recommend spending the few extra dollars on the larger king-bedded rooms, even if you're a single. Avoid 101-104, 201-204, 301-304 if you think the courtyard and pool noise will bother you (most prevalent 9-10a for breakfast and 3-6 for happy hours). Ultimately it is the staff at this hotel that makes it work. They are fantastic and often went above and beyond to meet my requests. Thanks to Gabriel and Jorge for making my stay extra special. A great property for a single traveler. Bottom line: I would definitely stay here again.

“this was an awful experience..A BIG mistake!”

Hotel Mercurio

1 of 5 stars
Chicago area

We read accounts on this very website and booked our trip by the high ratings people give this hotel. That was a big mistake!

the room was without a doubt, the worst i have ever stayed in.

the beds in the "double" room, were barely wider than a twin,
and were a two inch thick mattress, on a cement like foundation...
I am only 6' tall and my feet hung off the end of the bed. Even though we had been up for 30 hours getting to the hotel, neither of us could sleep, the beds were that bad.
the television set was a maybe a 12'' screen, and because the room was so small, had to be on a shelf suspended from the ceiling 8 ft. up in the air. Not only that, but the remote didn't work, aand i (literally) could not see the picture while i was changing the channel.

the bathroom, even WORSE! could not sit properly on the toilet, not only was the toilet seat broken, but also because it is an inch from the shower door, (which was broken) on one side and an inch from the sink (stained and mildew)on the other.

We have stayed in some pretty rundown hotel rooms before and some of the cheaper hotels in P.V. before, but the bathroom here (as well as the furniture) was awful, even by those standards.
We saw a "newly remodelled room, and didn't see a real big difference other than the t.v. was a flatscreen.
The staff was friendly...(at least until we complained)
the pool...forget it.
I realize that pools in P.V. are usually small, but In the internet pictures it shows a person floating with arms outstretched... and was probably touching both sides of the pool. Seriously, large hot tub, not a pool.
the continental breakfast was ok, although they were painting part of the hotel, so thats all we could smell while eating.

again, this is not a deluxe hotel. it is not even an average hotel.
i sincerely don't know how people can compare it to the 4 seasons?!?..Get REAL!
While we were there, not even one person said anything like what we read in the reviews, but heard a MANY people say they were over charged for what they got, and wouldn't be back.
I wouldn't stay here, even if it were free.

Management Response

This reviewers comments are most interesting, and most disturbing. It is interesting that he claims, for example, that we were painting during his stay, and that there was a strong paint odor. No painting has been done since last fall. 2-inch matress on a concrete base? Yes, some rooms do have a concrete, built-in base...these are very common in tropical climates...but the matresses are top quality, certainly not "thin." And in a Double Room, there are 2 full-size beds (beds are standard...king, queen, full and twin) there are no twin beds at Hotel Mercurio. Mildew in the bathroom? Odd that so many other reviews here and elsewhere highly praise the cleanliness. Broken toilet seat and no space between the toilet and shower? How many inches or feet does one require? Our bathrooms are not huge, but are adequately sized.

This review seems to contain some serious factual errors, is completely out of character with the vast majority of reviews about Hotel Mercurio, and thus seems suspect. I might also point out that we have had no guest named "Wally Wood."

Once again the staff at Hotel Mecurio
has gone above & beyond what most hotels would do for their guests. Jim & I unfortunately can not book our time with you till later in the year & because of that we had you move mid week .Thinking we would need to walk a few blocks & not looking forward to that.
Gabrial got us the apartment across the street for Thursday night, you let us keep our bags in the office a few times while we we waiting to check in & when we were departing. It is ALWAYS nice to tease George while having a drink & has become a long lost friend when we arrive.
I was not feeling good when we arrived & your staff took my stress away rather than adding to it as most hotel staff does ,you would think that everyone of them are the owners.
We look forward to coming back next year but for longer.
Sincerely John Auburn & Jim Baker

“What a wonderful vacation”

My partner and I just spent 7 wonderful nights at the Mercurio. What a wonderful time we had. Socializing at the wonderful full breakfast daily and at the afternoon drinks around the pool in the late afternoon. The pool is great. We made new friends with 3 groups of people and it was really nice. For our single friend traveling with us, he was able to play and have fun, and for a couple of 12 years that does not play, we did not feel uncomfortable. The rooms at present are "Mexican Rustic" with very comfortable pillow top matresses, , very efficient Carrier A/C units, plenty of hot water and pressure, clean floors, and on our last night they began installing 24" flat screen TVs with satellite in the rooms. The complimentary cocktail on arrival, complimentary T shirt, great restaurant recommendations and the staffs' attention to detail really made we want to return every year on vacation. We plan to return next year for sure.

    • Liked — great location and great value
    • Disliked — The furniture in the room is old and basic, but they are in the process of upgrading everything
