We just returned from a wonderful vacation in Marina Vallarta at the Casa Velas hotel. We were immediately impressed by the tranquility of the setting and the friendliness of the staff who sincerely seem to enjoy welcoming each visitor. The rooms are spacious and the beds extremely comfortable. We had a room with the highly sought-after plunge pool, but we honestly only used the plunge pool once since it was largely in the shade during the afternoon. It would have been nicer to request a room with a golf course view, since it would be nicer to relax in the plunge pool in the afternoon sun and watch the golfers finish their rounds. But otherwise, the room was extremely lovely and one of the nicest we've ever stayed in (including rooms at the Ritz).
The best part of the hotel for us was the private beach club. How relaxing to sit by (or in) an infinity pool in a tranquil setting with only a few other couples there, drinking pina coladas and eating tempura shrimp (a must have at the beach club!), watching the waves and the ships in the bay. As for the food, breakfast at Emiliano's was always an expansive buffet and quite delicious. For dinner, Emiliano's was also delicious, but the beach club is not to be missed, mostly for the lovely setting. As part of the all-inclusive package, you can eat at the sister hotel, the Velas Vallarta. But honestly, it's not worth it. A trip to the Velas reminds you why you stayed at an adults-only resort, and the food is sub-par compared to Casa Velas. We would, however, recommend taking a taxi downtown one night (60 to 80 pesos, depending on the mood of the taxi driver) and having dinner on the Malecon or in Old Town, just for the experience, even with the all-inclusive. You can always come back to the hotel for (free) dessert!
The only thing we haven't seen mentioned recently in reviews that we think deserves mentioning: the time share issue. Upon arriving we were greeted by Stefano, who masquerades as the hotel concierge and eagerly tells you about the hotel and available activities. You soon find out that Stefano is actually part of a travel agency, not the hotel concierge. And as part of his welcome to Puerto Vallarta talk, he tries to rope you into a "tour" of the Velas Vallarta that is clearly meant to be a time share sell. It supposedly only take 90 minutes and "90% of people take the tour", and in return you are rewarded by getting for free the activities he's just told you about. We happily decided to avoid the tour and enjoy the beach instead. We ended up paying for whale watching instead of getting it for free, but in return we probably saved several hours of valuable vacation time.
All in all, this was a fabulous place to spend a luxurious vacation in PV. We would definitely return to the Casa Velas!
