“Decent but not great...”

Villas Vallarta by Canto del Sol

Mar 2, 2008

I stayed at Villas Vallarta for a week in February and it was a good experience but did have a few drawbacks. First off, Villas Vallarta and Canto del Sol are one in the same property, just two buildings. If you are staying at Villas you have full access to the amenities at Canto. The buffet and snack bar menu is always the same at both places, just usually less crowded at Villas.

First the good: The hotel is in a great location as far as being accessible to other things. It took me 30 minutes to walk to the boardwalk and would have only been a $5 taxi ride if I hadn't wanted the expeince of exploring by walking there. There are several shops located in the direct vicinty of the hotel where you can pick up jewelry or souveniers. There is also a very large grocery store about a five minute walk south from the hotel where you can get anything you need. I found a great litte restaraunt about 2 blocks south of the hotel. Not sure of the name but it had gates across the front and was an open air building and the food was incredible. The hotel itself was pretty good. I am a very picky eater but never went hungry during my stay. The buffet had plenty of choices and while I do have to say that some of them didn't look too appetizing served buffet style once I tried them the flavor was great. The bartenders are extremely generous with the booze when they are making drinks. The chips, beef tacos and cheeseburgers at the snack bar were great. The staff was incredible. Everyone went out of their way to be helpful and often wanted to chat for just a minute to see if you liked the hotel, Puerto Vallarta and just to get to know you. The waiters went out of their way to make sure you had drinks while dining and were especially friendly. Leave a one or two dollar tip for their help and you will get incredible service all week. You get full access to the amenities at Canto del Sol so I could choose which building I ate at for each meal. The food was always the same but I found that Villas was much less crowded during meals. The activities staff at Canto were amazing. Jerry and his buddies that worked the poolside activities each day kept the laughter flowing and everyone entertained. Very charismatic and engaging group and they made it a lot of fun. At night, the shows were a little corny but still very entertaining.

The bad: The walls in the rooms at Villas are very thin and the bathroom is against the exterior wall for the hallways with an opque slatted window that does not fully close. So, as you walked down the hallway, you could hear everything going on in the bathrooms. You could hear the showers running and even smell the different soaps that people were using. The air conditioner doesn't have a temperature setting that cycles on and off to regulate the temp. You can chose from high, medium, low or just plain off. Whatever setting you put it on, it stays that way, running all the time until you change the setting. I had to leave it on at night to keep the room from getting too warm but then even on low, I ended up being very cold during the night. You can hear people coming back late at night and when the staff shows up in the morning around 7 you can hear them moving around. The pool at Villas is very small but usually not very crowded. I spent most of my time at Canto and the pool there gets very crowded. People were coming out early in the morning and putting shoes, towels and books on chairs in prime spots and then not coming back for hours if not all day. There are signs up asking people to not reserve chairs but they get ignored. It got so bad one day that there were no open chairs and I went to the snack bar and came back to find that the people that had been sitting next to me for a few hours were about to dump my stuff off my chair and take it. I think this was the most annoying part of the experience for me. I am used to smaller hotels that cater to divers and have never had trouble getting a chair before. The only other drawback to the hotel is the beach. There is a very small beach with a few palapas on it and those go quickly each morning. The tide changes the beach line drastically each day. There is a good wide beach space in the morning but it climbs higher each hour until around sundown there is room for one row of chairs and that is it. The water tosses rocks all over the beach one day and takes them all away the next so you never know if it will be sand or rocks. The undertow is way too strong to really get in the water here. Only a small handful of drunk people attempted it and those attempts lasted only a few short minutes. The hotel can't do anything about it, It is on the Pacific Ocean after all. Just don't think that you will be going someplace with clear calm water you can swim or snorkel in.

Overall I enjoyed my week but I think I will be headed back to the Cozumel area next time for a quieter vacation with calmer water. If you are looking for a vacation where you hang out poolside and have lots of activites going on this is the place for you. Plenty to entertain you during the day, good food and drinks lots of people to watch.

“Had so much fun at Villas Vallarta”

Villas Vallarta by Canto del Sol

I haven't been away in about three years, and wanted to go back to P.V in a bad way. My boyfriend was taking his first trip anywhere warm so I wanted to take him here. I booked online so I was a bit worried cause the price for the trip was great but so so reviews for this hotel.
At first when we drove up I didn't know what to expect but as soon as we were greeted I felt ok about the place. Everyone very friendly and helpful. Our first night wasn't great cause they gave us a room right over Golds Gym, so at 7am you can hear the music blaring and the guy screaming. I asked to be moved to another room and they did, pool view with patio doors. We were allowed to use Canto Del Sol as well it was great. Food wise breakfast great, buffett I am not really into, the two al cart restaurants Mexican and steak house were great!
Just watch for the time share people they fool you into thinking they work for Hotel, the only people in the lobby that do is the front desk. But it really was great!!!!

“Loved it!!”

Our family stayed at Villas Vallarta, and had an exellent time. The staff there are so friendly, helpful, and they made you feel so welcome. They were constantly asking if they can get you something, and they go above and beyond my expectations. I would have to say my absolute favorite thing about Peurto Vallarta was the people i can't get over how friendly they are, and I also never realized how beautiful mexico was until i arrived there. The food there was delicious, a nice variety, and i must say the Italian Restuarant was the best. Its sad when u have to go all the way to mexico to have really good Italian Food. Villas Vallarta is alot smaller then Canto Del Sol, but it wasn't as crowded. Also the nice thing is that if you to go over to Canto Del Sol you can its just accros the street. The location of the hotel was alot great because it was in the middle of Peurto Vallarta so it was walking distance to everywhere, or a cheap cab ride. The rooms were ok, nothing to special, but what are you doing in the room in mexico, its just a place to sleep. I would have to say the only think i didn't like was having to walk 3 stories and a block to get to my room but, thats nothing. I know when I go back I will be staying at the exact same place, but I could go on all day about how wonderful this place was, but this wil give you an idea.

“What a Great Holiday”

Villas Vallarta by Canto del Sol

After reading some of the reviews we were a little leary about this trip. However, we had a wonderful time. The food was good, a 6 or 7 out of ten, and very plentiful. There was always fruit and salads available as well as rice, potatoes and a choice of 3 or 4 meats. If the restaurant was closed, the snack bar was open which served hamburgers, hotdogs, tacos, fries, pizza and beverages. The deserts were not the best as the cakes all tasted the same and were too moist, almost wet and the icecream was very poor quality. It did not melt in the sun. The room was clean and the maid service was excellent. Very friendly and helpful staff. My only complaints was the constant barage of beach vendors and it would have been nice to have a little more quiet at the pool. There was usually loud music playing. Stay away from the time share presentations. I didn't go but everyone was saying that they kept you for at least 4 hours. You will get a couple of vouchers to eat ala carte at either the Italian or Mexican restaurant or you can choose to go to one of them twice. The Italian restaurant was okay but the Mexican restaurant was fantastic. I would go there twice next time.

  • This TripAdvisor Member:
    • Liked — Great room, pool and lounge chairs and shade on the beach.
    • Disliked — Music at restaurant (They played horrible Christmas music) and music too loud and constant at pool. I hated the pesky beach vendors, they should't be allowed to approach the guests.

“Loved Villas Vallarta”

Villas Vallarta by Canto del Sol

This trip was booked for 4 university students (20 years old) during reading week. We knew we were going to get a 3 star resort and because of the university budget booked a cheaper hotel. This hotel has everything you need to have a great time. It included the amenities at Canto del Sol which was literally across the street and a minutes walk away. We hung out over there for most of the time as it was a larger resort and had more people, the beach as this resort is not ocean-side, and in my opinion better food.

The service as Villas Vallarta is great though and the bartender by the pool area was always friendly (if you make friends with him, have him switch to the better tequila, vodka, etc.)

The room was huge, and it catered to us nicely, we were not expecting the rooms to be so large and we were pleasantly surprised by them. They were always cleaned properly and we couldn't find anything to complain with about them.

I think people just need to relax on their posts, this is a 2.5-3 star resort there is no doubt about that. But it includes access to a 4 star hotel at Canto del Sol, and this is where if you choose you can spend most of your day. Having said that it ranks low on the star rating, you will not be turned off by anything here, the food is edible, the drinks are definately drinkable, and the service is great. I recommend if you are a college/university student to check this one out, the nightlife at the resort itself is not great, but there was always people at Canto del Sol to meet and go out with.

Cheers.
