10 REASONS WE ARE SO THANKFUL WE HAD THE PUERTO VALLARTA FORUM EXPERTS HELPING US MAKE OUR VACATION MEMORABLE.
(In no particular order)
1. Airport Orientation - Getting through the airport is just as explained by everyone. After getting the green light, and making your way through the "Gauntlet" of vendors, we headed out front for the taxis. The only thing...we were leary that the people trying to grab our attention from the big "TAXI" booth at the end of the room were more timeshare or tour vendors. Not true, but they do work hard for your ride.
2. Riding the Public Bus - As first-timers, these busses are very intimidating - filled with people, speeding so close to everything. Once we got a couple rides under our belts, our family of five, based at Los Tules, would not consider any other way of getting around. We never waited any more than a couple minutes and bus stops were plentiful. Taking the "Centro" bus was good for a few times but we found that since many of the places we wanted to see were in the South Side, taking the "Tunel" bus was much more convenient...just hold your breath!
3. Gigante! - This store was right across the street from our resort and was a mainstay for our snacks and breakfasts. I bet there's not a store in town with more variety in the bakery department. For breakfast we lived on the muffins and sweet rolls they offered, many of them at the price of a back-home doughnut. They had everything you'd find at Walmart with better prices. We did get caught up thinking someone helping us was an employee, but turned out to be a timeshare salesman.
4. El Verano Canopy Tour - We reserved our tour online, through Amigo Tours, and even our friends living in P.V. said we got a good deal. $70 US dollars is a good deal for these zip lines but the $56 US dollars we paid was a great deal! ( Dietmar, the owner of Amigo Tours told me his webmaster moved and he, not being computer saavy, was not able to change the online price.) Dietmar even met me at our resort for the transaction. As for the zip lines, we should have went twice. We were more concerned about keeping straight on the line than the view. You're flying through the jungle! Look around! Remember to bring bug spray. We were reminded a few times about this but were more excited about the tour than the spray and forgot.
5. Phone Cards - We bought a 100 peso LADATEL phone card when we got in and never needed to buy another one. There are phones everywhere and we got a little over half and hour of calls home.
6. Water Taxi to Yelapa - It was an early start for us but well worth it. We weren't really sure where to catch the bus to Boca de Tomatlan but with the help of the people around the area we found the bus in time. And as a side note: Many bus stops are not marked but the buses are. We looked for "Mismaloya" on the bus window and then asked the driver if he was going to Boca. The ride took about 40 minutes, stopping every once and a while to let people on and off. Another man helped us to the beach and one of the water taxis. The 60 peso ride left a little after 9am and was beautiful. The driver stayed close to shore, stopping a couple times to let passengers off. We landed on an empty beach and was greeted by someone from Rogelio's and was served the best huevos rancheros of our trip. The water was clear and the sand was softer than P.V. The walk through town was fun but the waterfall beyond town was a bit overrated. Back at the now crowded beach, we flagged down the pie lady and enjoyed three different pies; pecan, banana, and cheese, before hopping aboard our water taxi back. We would have never gone to Yelapa if it wasn't for this forum. Our sunburn will fade but the memory of that day will live forever.
7. Pipi's - Great time. Excellent, reasonable food. The best service (we've never had ice added to the ice tea when it was getting low). Huge margaritas!
8. El Brujo - I ordered a dish called "4th of September". It was fish stuffed with shrimp, mushroom, and veggies, grilled and was the best meal of the trip for me. I enjoyed the restaurant's layout. The room is wide open. You can see the freshness coming out of the kitchen.
9. Pancake House. - We would have been happy with our Gigante fruit and sweet rolls for breakfast but reccomendations by people on this forum drew us to the bus for a ride to the Pancake House. There really aren't many places for breakfast and this place hit the spot. The fresh fruit and juice complimented the eggs benedict and waffles. My wife tried something different (waffles with a Mexican carmel sauce) and didn't really enjoy the flavor, but the rest of our meal was delicious.
10. La Piazzetta - Our first choice for dinner this night was burgers at Chili's but the "Closed for the Summer" sign, luckily, took us one block north to La Piazzetta. The meal began with oil and spiced vinegar for the sourdough and ended with limon liquor. In between was pizza with whole black olives, mushrooms, and pepperoni, served on a crispy flour crust, and we had an excellent chicken with spinach and wine sauce.
HONORABLE MENTION - We went to Ernesto's on a reccomendation. Once the cab driver found the restaurant (it's in the hotel zone right next to the cinema), we felt like we were having dinner in the family's backyard. We knew the delicious meal was made from scratch, as the cook had to send her helper to the store in the middle of preparation. Our dinner was highlighted by the complimentary tortilla soup. We had a short chat with the chef's daughter and she told us that normally her dad fishes for and prepares the day's menu but he wasn't there that day.
