Sotavento is not a great hotel but it i not a bad Hotel either. We stayed once in February of 2007 and then again over New Years 2007/2008. Our February stay was only for a couple of days before we headed to Las Brisas in Ixtapa, and I couldn’t wait to get back. Our December/January Stay was for 8 days and I couldn’t wait to leave.
The rooms are basic. There is nothing, and I mean nothing, fancy about them. They are however, kept very clean.
Our 1st stay the hotel was peaceful and quiet. On this trip they were kind enough to place us between a room filled with 4 teenage girls to one side and a room filled with a family of 7 on the other. No lie 7 people sleeping in a “Studio”. This was the norm throughout the Hotel. We met a very nice couple from Germany who had a family of eight next door and a group of people who said there had to be an entire town in the room next to theirs. OK, I understand it was a holiday for the locals and I’m told that Ziwat is a popular destination for folks who live in Mexico City, but where do you draw the line. Which brings me to my big, cranky old man, gripe? When I called the front desk at 12:30am and explained that I couldn’t sleep due to the noise I was told that they would send someone right away. Right away was 45minutes later and nothing was accomplished. This was the case 4 out of the 5 nights we stayed there.
The Beds – our first trip the bed was decent. Low to medium quality, but you could sleep on it. Our second trip the beds were a nightmare. I literally pulled the lounge chair in from the patio and slept on that. It’s a crap shoot.
The Hotel is also on the best beach “La Ropa”. However during our 1st trip the beach was clean and crowds were few. During our last trip there were so many locals that you could barely see the sand or find a place to swim. Also, when the locals leave they leave their trash behind and nothing but the surf cleans up the public areas.
Last but not least, the staff. On our first trip the staff was so helpful and the service was above even that of a high cost hotel. On the second trip the opposite was true, while they went through the motions you could feel that the staff was overworked and that their heart was not in it.
One last note - I made several phone calls to other hotels during our second and third days at Sotavento. On Night three the manager stopped us when we asked for a cab into town and told me that if we were planning on going to a different Hotel that there would be no refund for any nights that we do not stay with them. I very honestly told him that I could care less about a refund I just needed to be at a Hotel where I could relax a little and receive a little service. The next day we had trouble getting a table for breakfast as well as towels for the beach. Question: how did he know I was calling other hotels?
Our last three nights were spent in absolute luxury next door at the Intrawest.
