“Spectacular view and charming owners”

We just reurned from a four day stay (April 25-29) at Villas el Morro in Zihuatanejo. My husband, my sister, and my mother all found Villas el Morrow, Eduardo (the owner) Esperanza and all ot the family and staff to be delightful. There is no more spectacular view in Zihua than that from the terrace of Villas el Morro. They only serve breakfast, but the palapa covered terrace area has a view which is breathtaking, day or night. As we had purchased papayas, mangoes, bananas, the most luscious coconut yogurt and other goodies at the markets and fruit stalls, we never actually ate breakfast there, but other guests said it was excelltent.

For those who want all meals within walking distance, the Villa Vero Puerto Mio (about a block level walk from Villas) has two restaurants--one serves all day, and La Cala serves great dinners in a beautul bayside setting.

Our suite had air conditioning only in the bedroom, however, it never was overly hot in the rest of the suite. As we had floor to ceiling windows in each room, we practiced climate control by closing the drapes when we left. As I had read previous reviews before we booked, I was aware of the location. My husband and I walked down the stone steps (170) about half a block from the hotel, and it was not a problem. Coming back up was a bit of a killer in the afternoon sun, but a taxi would come within 5 minutes of being called, and it was simple to catch a taxi back up from town. Depending on how far the ride was, it cost $3 for El Centro, up to $8 for Ixtapa. The taxi drivers without exception were friendly and helpful. I speak Spanish, but am not fluent and there would have been no problem if one knew how to pronounce the destination, even if not a Spanish speaker. Eduardo or one of his staff usually called the taxi, as there are no telephones in the rooms, but the phone is always available on the Palapa terrace, and I used the phone (no charge) to get a taxi, or make dinner reservations with no problems.

Our suite was very clean, and we had no problems with anything. However, I guessed correctly that shampoo, conditioner, hair dryer and extra soap might not be provided. We carried small bottles of our favorites--always wise in any case. Although we did not tour any of the other rooms or suites, it appeared that all had as spectacular view as ours. (It was called the "Spectacular Suite") As I have said, the view was so spectacular that it was hard not to just stay awake at night and watch the changing lilghts, and of course every morning, the sun rise was gorgeous as well, and watching the fishing boats depart was just the beginning of action on the bay that we could have watched all day. We chose some view restaurants for dinner (Casa Que Canta, Amuleto and La Cala) and our view at the villas equaled their views!! (also quite impressive looking back across the bay toward our site.)

While we were there Carnaval was going on and there was music from the basketball court on Playa Principal, which wafted up to us. We noticed the music, but it certainly did not keep us awake. It did kind of add to the festive atmosphere. Before I stop rambling, just want to mention the great pool--such a beautiful setting and view and very clean. Also, our shower had plenty of hot water, and we never used the jacuzzi but it had a view as well!

If you are looking for a slick hotel with mass produced convenience, then Villas el Morro may not be for you. However, if you want a hand crafted, unique and beautiful hotel with character and charm, you'll be happy you came to Villas el Morro. We did not rent a car, so no matter how many taxis we used, it was still less than what we would have spent on a car. And parking was never a problem!

We would without doubt return to Villas El Morro. However if we had small children who wanted to be able to walk outside to the beach without traveling, a beach front hotel might suit your needs more. I have posted a few photos. Villas el Morro website has many more.

This small hotel sits on a hillside with a spectacular view of the Bay of Zihuatanejo. And that view is the high point. It is a small, three-story hotel that opened in 2003 or so. Only about ten rooms.

My wife and I generally are not difficult people, but this was our experience: Only the bedroom is air-conditioned. On arrival, the AC worked, but that night it was only tossing out regular air from the fan. We had a bad night of sleep due to the heat. We told the desk clerk about the problem when we headed out the next morning.

On arriving back at the hotel that afternoon, the AC problem had not been addressed, no cool air at all. We noticed the maid was cleaning the room next to ours, so I told her we would be changing rooms, which we did without mentioning it to the desk clerk.

Later on in the day, we ran into the hotel owner who insisted the AC had been working fine in our previous room. Not so. He was snippy.

About 10 p.m. we used the toilet for the first time in the new room. It did not flush, and it was in a condition in which it very much needed to be flushed. We went downstairs and asked for a standard plunger, which would have solved the problem, I believe. There was none to be found anywhere! So, we asked to be switched back to our initial room next door. At least the toilet was not stopped up. We made this switch at 10:30 in our pyjamas with no help from anybody. At least, the AC had been fixed. Yes, that would be the AC that had been working just fine, according to the owner. He had fixed the non-broken AC.

The next day, we got another deadpan look from the owner. He shows up for a couple of hours in the morning and in the late afternoon.

If you have your own car, the steep and short driveway is a major challenge. It is very difficult to turn around in the driveway once you get to the top.

The hotel sits across the bay from the main plaza and bandstand of Zihuatanejo. On occasion, they crank up the concerts to mega-levels, and it is very audible in your room, late into the night. Bring earplugs. Or dance all night in your pyjamas.

For the money, there are other, far better deals in Zihuatanejo. We would probably have departed after the first sweltering night, but the owner insists on obtaining all the money for the total stay in advance. Did I ask for a refund after the first night? No, I did not. Perhaps I should have, but I have lived in Mexico for years, and know that small Mexican businesses generally balk strenuously at refunds.

I do not recommend this hotel, obviously.

We just stayed at this hotel in Zihua. It is across the bay from all the other hotels, which brings three advantages: being able to look at all the pretty hotels, the sunrise and shady afternoons. This is a small hotel, and the owner, Eduardo, is on site every day. It's pretty basic, but there are suites with kitchens available. There is a also a top floor suite with its own pool. The rooms and shared pool area are kept very clean, and the 4-5 staff are very helpful and you get to know them by name. We talked to many other guests who are repeat vistors. This is a place for those who are not high-maintenance travellers, but appreciate a casual, relaxed place. Note: those with mobility problems should either get here and back by taxi, or sadly, consider another place, as there are many steps and a hill to get down to town. When we return to Zihua, this is our spot!

My wife and I stayed at Villas el Morro and absolutely loved it! We celebrated our wedding anniversary there and Eduardo, Ely, Remauldo and Mirna could not have been amy nicer to us! This place is the best! I am so pleased that Eduardo is doing so well at the Villas. He is a most gracious host and he and his staff definitely go out of their way to please their guests! We will return to the Villas any time we go back to Zihua.

Just returned from a trip to Zihua in 10/2005. Had planned on staying at Villas El Morro for three days - ended up staying the whole week. Nice room, friendly, hard-working and honest staff, great view of the bay and the town, pool in the shade in the evening. Short walk to town down a staircase (no handrail), but not the 170 steps I read elsewhere - maybe 50 steps - possilby a different route? Took a taxi back up the hill for about 30 pesos from the Zocalo - never walked it back. Firm beds - mattress on concrete - but I understand firm is the rule. Very quiet - had the whole place to ourselves for 5 of the 7 nights. Great price, especially in off season.
