Stayed at universo hotel about 15 months ago.
I especially liked the resaurant's breafasts which
includes all you can drink orange juice for about
75 pesos. Other items may include beef stew and
pasta. What Breafasts!
Mostly Mexican tourists stay here.
The hotel's laundry service is rather pricey, but management allows the housekeeping gals to do
your laundry on the side for a few pesos and ready next day. Will stay here again.

It has been a few years since my stay, so this is dated information, but we certainly enjoyed it. It was clean and comfortable, with some staff members who spoke a little english. The best part is, it is only about 3 blocks to the Cathedral, and the beautiful downtown area, and also near shopping. They have a resturant with good food, and it was reasonable. It appears that the rates have not changed since my visit.
This is one of the hotels used by Mexican Tour operators as there were busses of tourists almost daily. I would definately stay there again.
The only minus I could find was room decoration, ( a little too much color for my taste ),and that may have changed by now.
