I have been in many hotels in many countries on business and pleasure trips, and this is my favorite hotel. My wife and I stayed there during the first week in March, 2008, and we were very pleased with everything about this hotel. Why?
Value: We chose a standard room, because we use a hotel merely as a place to sleep, clean up and, sometimes, rest. We don't spend much time in the room just hanging out, we would rather be in the plazas or, if the weather is bad, in a bar, or seeing the sights. The room was clean, new, and the bath room was modern with a shower. The mattresses are very firm and we found them very comfortable, but if you have to have a soft mattress, you won't be happy with these. There are two sorts of standard rooms--balcony and inside. The inside rooms are, to our taste, too dark and claustrophobic because their windows open only onto one of the interior courts. The balcony rooms have a set of narrow French doors that open onto a "balcony" just large enough to hold the open doors. I have never been in a hotel that was, physically, any better, even when I paid several times as much per night.
Amenities: This is a refurbished "old time" hotel (known as the "bullfighters' hotel", because many stayed there when it was first opened) with a large cool lobby made for sitting while waiting for...whatever. We only ate breakfast and a snack or two at the restaurant, so I can't give an opinion on the food, but they will deliver breakfast to the fourth floor terrace. The terrace was the reason I picked this hotel originally and I was not disappointed. We ate every breakfast there and a couple of times went to the OXXO for some beers and chips and spent a relaxing hour as the sun went down. (Of course, the bar will deliver to the terrace, but a six-pack and chips from the OXXO store is cheaper). We almost always had the terrace to ourselves.
Location: Everything that is in the central and historic district is within a short walk from this hotel. A twenty minute stroll will take you to Hospicio Cabañas (which I recommend, if only for the sculptural benches in front) which is the farthest sight to see. The cathedral is four blocks north. There are six churches worth seeing that we toured in about an hour and a half. Wandering in the neighborhoods to the northwest gives you an idea of what life is like in the city, yet you are only six or eight blocks from the hotel. In the block to the west there is a ScotiaBank for an ATM and that OXXO store for snacks and beer. The taquaria, Faroles, across the street was convenient for a quick local meal. And LaChata to the north is great.
