“A Star in Guadalajara... Usually”

Hotel Morales Historical & Colonial Downtown Core

I stayed at Hotel Morales once in May 2008 with my parents, and again in June 2008 on my own, as I prepared to move back to Canada from Guadalajara. My first stay at Hotel Morales was outstanding. The fourth-floor room was beautiful and the shower had windows with amazing views over the city. The beds were really comfortable and the hotel easily accommodated a third adult in the room for a small fee. Everything about our stay was first-rate, which was great for the price of about $90 US per night (that was cash, rates are a lot higher if you use a credit card). My second stay was in late June, during the rainy season, and it was slightly less spectacular. From about 7:00 pm to 12:00 am on the first night there was no hot water, apparently due to the rains outside. It rains A LOT in Guadalajara and an upscale hotel should have a way to ensure guests have hot water during rain (I wouldn't even say it was stormy). The next day, repairmen were on my floor doing something that caused the cable to cut in and out all day. I had already spent five months in the city and all I wanted was to spend an afternoon in front of the TV, unfortunately that wasn't possible. I would not hesitate to recommend Hotel Morales, but I think you have to be vocal and persistent if things aren't up to your standards.

    • Disliked — Erratic hot water and cable TV on my second visit.

I just want to say that I was very, very impressed with this hotel. The place is too much for the price. It's cheap and the hotel is clean, elegant but relaxing. It was our first time in Guadalajara, my wife and I. The people at the hotel made our stay and trip to Guadalajara so comfortable. The only thing was a club that was behind the hotel that was pretty loud but the people at the front desk we nice enough to give us a new room at another floor. When we first got there they greeted us by helping us with our bags and since we got there a bit early they held our luggage while they cleaned our room and we went to go eat. The rooms were incredible. It was as if I was at our house. The room had a 15 to 20 foot high ceiling and the bathrooms were awsome, they were big. The room also had a pretty big closet with an iron and iron board. There was also a safebox which made us feel a little more comfortable leaving our passports, money, etc. We were only there for 3 nights which we so much regret because we wanted to stay there more nights but we had to go to Puerto Vallarta, which i recomend traveling by bus (www.etn.com.mx). This busline was so comfortable. I most definitely recommend this hotel to anyone that wants to travel cheap and stay at a very nice hotel downtown Guadalajara.

“Very nice, great location”

A nice hotel in a great location, an easy walk to restaurants, historical sites, and interesting parks and squares. The room was spotless and well appointed, the air conditioning was a welcome break from the sweltering Guadalajara heat. About the only thing missing was an ice bucket, but there was no public icemaker. The front desk staff gave us ice if we asked for it. The food in the restaurant was good and reasonably priced. There is a nice terrace on the roof, but we felt it would have been better if there was a bar up there. We took our own beer which we bought from a 7/11 a block away. The staff were all friendly, and helpful, most spoke English. If i were to return to Guadalajara, i would definitely stay at this hotel again.

“Fine hotel in great location.”

I have been in many hotels in many countries on business and pleasure trips, and this is my favorite hotel. My wife and I stayed there during the first week in March, 2008, and we were very pleased with everything about this hotel. Why?

Value: We chose a standard room, because we use a hotel merely as a place to sleep, clean up and, sometimes, rest. We don't spend much time in the room just hanging out, we would rather be in the plazas or, if the weather is bad, in a bar, or seeing the sights. The room was clean, new, and the bath room was modern with a shower. The mattresses are very firm and we found them very comfortable, but if you have to have a soft mattress, you won't be happy with these. There are two sorts of standard rooms--balcony and inside. The inside rooms are, to our taste, too dark and claustrophobic because their windows open only onto one of the interior courts. The balcony rooms have a set of narrow French doors that open onto a "balcony" just large enough to hold the open doors. I have never been in a hotel that was, physically, any better, even when I paid several times as much per night.

Amenities: This is a refurbished "old time" hotel (known as the "bullfighters' hotel", because many stayed there when it was first opened) with a large cool lobby made for sitting while waiting for...whatever. We only ate breakfast and a snack or two at the restaurant, so I can't give an opinion on the food, but they will deliver breakfast to the fourth floor terrace. The terrace was the reason I picked this hotel originally and I was not disappointed. We ate every breakfast there and a couple of times went to the OXXO for some beers and chips and spent a relaxing hour as the sun went down. (Of course, the bar will deliver to the terrace, but a six-pack and chips from the OXXO store is cheaper). We almost always had the terrace to ourselves.

Location: Everything that is in the central and historic district is within a short walk from this hotel. A twenty minute stroll will take you to Hospicio Cabañas (which I recommend, if only for the sculptural benches in front) which is the farthest sight to see. The cathedral is four blocks north. There are six churches worth seeing that we toured in about an hour and a half. Wandering in the neighborhoods to the northwest gives you an idea of what life is like in the city, yet you are only six or eight blocks from the hotel. In the block to the west there is a ScotiaBank for an ATM and that OXXO store for snacks and beer. The taquaria, Faroles, across the street was convenient for a quick local meal. And LaChata to the north is great.

The hotel was very lovely. My wife and I enjoyed our stay very much. Try not to stay on the south side of the building. There is a bar that you hear the bass until 2 am. Everyone was very friendly and very helpful. Nearly everything was within walking distance. The whole historic distric is only about 5 blocks away.
