“Centro Historico is central”

I recently stayed at the Sheraton Centro Historico and really had no complaints. It is centrally located between two Metro stations and is walking distance to Palacio de Bellas Artes, Zocalo, Templo Mayor and much more. As a gold level Starwood member I was offered free internet service, however, I was disappointed with the Wi-Fi connection and ended up having to get a cable plug-in. There is a nice gym but there is an additional charge for it. The concierge was extremely helpful and had an answer for every question we had. I had a city view but I would highly recommend getting a Park view instead.

I used my Starwood points, so cannot comment on price.

“Stupid policies and annoying details--I won't stay again”

Sheraton Centro Historico Hotel

May 16, 2008

I recently had a chance to stay in two Sheratons in Mexico City—Maria Isabel and Centro Historico. While the Centro is newer, looks nicer and I like the location, there were many small inconveniences and stupid policies that discourage me from ever returning and from recommending it to anyone. Personally I think that the management is lacking, otherwise why neglect all these things that should be standard in a hotel of this class (and price)?

Biggest annoyances:
• No way to play my ipod thru the TV speakers. What are we, still in the 20th century? I stay in many hotels and am almost always able to do this. At Centro there were accessible AV inputs on the side of the TV, but no way to activate them. In Maria Isabel on the other hand, the engineer was great—he even removed the back of the TV and showed me how to easily switch between TV and ipod use. At Centro there was no solution except to call the engineer every time I wanted to listen to music—not feasible as far as I am concerned.
• The swimming pool is fine for infants to splash around, but no good for serious exercise swimming. There is a long empty hole that is supposed to be a lap pool, but, like I said, empty and apparently always that way since there was no sign saying it was being repaired or cleaned.
• There is no ventilation in the bathroom, so the mirrors are always misty after a shower. A bath with no vent? C’mon!
• All the elevators have TVs blaring ads about the hotel spa and restaurants. I find this extremely irritating, especially because the TVs cover the plate telling which services are on which floors. Stupid, right?

Minor annoyances, but things one expects in a hotel:
• At this hotel they don’t provide bathmats to place next to the tub when you step out. I have never, ever had a room without this basic facility. The stone floors are cold on naked feet and the puddles annoying.
• They are very cheap with the towels, providing fewer than normal.
• They put message pads next to the phones, but no pens. Again, never seen that level of cheapness before.

In summary, the hotel is serviceable in a pinch but I would focus next time on one that not only has some style but covers basic needs as well.

“Enjoyed the stay!”

Sheraton Centro Historico Hotel

This is a nice business class hotel on par with most new Hilton, Westin, etc. Beautiful lobby, spacious rooms, clean and comfortable beds, nice furniture and decor. The staff overall are friendly and helpful. Not everyone speaks English but most do.
The location for this hotel is also very good. Easy access to all the historic sites and museums in downtown, easy access to food on all sorts of budgets (from excellent taco street stands to nice up scale restaurants in downtown). The metros (subways are also close by), with two stations on different lines in short walking distance.

There is a $10/day charge for internet (wireless and wired). I was able to get a weak signal in the lobby for something from the Ciudad de Mexico (or similar SID). it's some kind of free wifi in beta version from the city. I had to register (free) to gain access. It worked but the signal was pretty weak at the hotel and speed was slow. I ended up paying the hotel for internet. For free wifi hot spot, I was able to get a free signal at the Cafe de Tacuba in centro historico.

Anyway, great stay, will definitely stay here again if return to Mexico City.

“Great location, room & service as may be expected”

Sheraton Centro Historico Hotel

Stayed here early May with my wife for 2 nights at the start of our holiday, driving through Mexico. The hotel's location is very good: central and next to some places that provide breakfast (Starbucks and an Italian restaurant). With a location in front of the Alameda park, it`s very walkable to the Bellas Artes, the Zocalo, Plaza Garibaldi, etc. With the metro stop Hidalgo very nearby, these and further destinations like the Museum of Anthropology and History are easy to reach (Zona Rosa is relatively nearby). That said, the hotel quality is nowhere near that of the JW Marriott in Polanco (further out), where I stayed some 3 years ago. The bed is good, as is the bathroom. The air quality in the room not too good, the windows don`t open, the swimming pool (free) is adequate, and the fact that the fitness area costs 115 pesos to use for hotel guests ridiculous. Other little annoyances (sorry, but with this quality of hotel I need to mention them): no complementary water in the room, the minibar being locked after cleaning (after explicity having had someone come up to open it the night before). Overall a good hotel, but definitely not great in my book.

“What you would expect from a Sheraton”

Sheraton Centro Historico Hotel

3 of 5 stars
Houston, Texas

I suppose when you choose to stay at a Sheraton, you do so because you know it will probably be average to above-average.

This was true of my stay at the Sheraton in Mexico City's Centro Histórico.

The rooms are comfortable but not anything to write home about. My bed was "good enough". I had an excellent view of the Torre Latinoamericana -- try to ask for a room on the east side of the hotel.

The hotel has lots of amenities. There's a great bar in the lobby and a few shops that sell overpriced basics and souvenirs -- obviously, you pay for the convenience. The gym is run by the best chain in Mexico City. The pool was OK -- only the indoor pool was open during my stay. The hot tub was sub-par -- the water was lukewarm, and it's too big to be considered cozy and comfortable.

if you need a taxi de sitio, be sure to ask the concierge rather than the doormen. The doormen always insist that you use the hotel's taxi, which is overpriced. Taxis de sitio are a much better, and equally-safe, alternative.

The business center is ridiculously overpriced -- in April, it cost 30 pesos (US$3.00) for 15 minutes. Much better to go down the block and find a regular internet cafe.

The location was nice. It's an easy taxi ride to the Zona Rosa, Polanco, Chapultepec, etc. The Zocalo and the rest of the Centro Histórico are an easy walk away. There are several Metro stops nearby.

Overall, I was happy with my stay. I paid only $53/night before taxes since I booked through Hotwire. Although I recommend this hotel, there are much better options available.
