I stayed here leadng up to Christmas (left 12/24). The B&B is beautiful and everyone is friendly. The food is absolutely wonderful. Since I have not stayed at other B&Bs in Oaxaca, I cannot really compare it to others, but I felt the price was reasonable. I stayed in a back room (Golindrina..sp?I'm writing from memory) and the water pressure was always good for the shower there, I always had hot water,
etc. The room I had was less than the stated average price. Each room was different, but all that I saw were charming. The mattress was
fine, probably better than the one I have at home. Mattresses seem to be an issue for some people...but firm is usually good. Not hard. firm. You can leave your windows open and hear the night sounds or close them. There is an open patio to the sky in the back and in the front. I always take earplugs on any vacation because unfamiliar sounds will always be a problem. Street sounds could be heard without them. That is almost always the case anywhere and you are talking patios in Mexico. The B&B is close to Santo Domingo, to the west, a park to the north and the Zocalo to the south. Easy walking every way,
and to the main mercados and museums. You can get information on tours
from Nora and William, and I think they promote this, but there is not
pressure beyond suggestions. I went to at least one of the restaurants
they recommend and found it excellent (la Olla). For stamps you can go
to the Philately museum on Reform next to the ethnobotanical garden (adjacent to Sto. Domingo), which is easy and fast. And free to see their little museum. Most of the people staying at the B&B were from the US, but as soon as you get outside you can be on your own in Mexico if you want. It is a very safe neighborhood. A woman by herself
can walk at night there with no hassle. In fact, I never saw women being hassled, even in a sporting way, in Oaxaca, although I'm sure some neighborhoods somewhere could be dangerous. ANywhere near the centro is safe, as far as I could tell. There is a small language school around behind the Sto. Domingo complex, Spanish Magic, which allowed walk in individual instruction. I really enjoyed them and their flexibility. There are obviously networks of business which support each other in Oaxaca. It is not unethical, it is just a form of cooperation. Just be aware there is more than one network and a little normal walking around and exploration, which is what travel is about, will allow you to find out all kinds of things.
