“Great Experience at Las Mariposas!”

Las Mariposas

5 of 5 stars
Oakland, CA
Jun 8, 2008

First off, this is not an international luxury hotel--Las Mariposas is a small, locally operated hotel in a great location in Oaxaca. My dad and I were traveling together in the end of May 2008 and he ended up staying here for ten days as I was doing a homestay not far away. Although my homestay was enjoyable, I was excited to get my room at Las Mariposas for four days at the end of my homestay.

My two rooms (we left for a night in the middle of my stay) were both on the balcony and the location was perfect. The cost was about 40 US per night since we were there in the low season. The rooms were very clean and the service is amazing (not pampering amazing but exceedingly friendly). Every employee is so kind and helpful. Lucia and Teresa who I believe own the hotel went above and beyond to give us travel suggestions and help with booking other parts of our trip.

The breakfast is fine, nothing fancy though I loved the cinnamon in my coffee! The rooms are clean and orderly though, again, not fancy. I loved all the plants around the courtyards. There were a fair amount of American, Canadian, and French tourists staying there while we were there so be sure to get out and about to practice your spanish language!

I used the computer often and had no trouble that the earlier reviewer did--it is available from 7am-10pm which I thought was reasonable since they ask for quiet hours after 10pm, something I think the courtyard facing room occupants would appreciate.

Anyway, I decided after my first night there that I would recommend Las Mariposas to any friend going to Oaxaca.

“Just the Right Location in the City”

Las Mariposas

It was clean beyond clean, safe (that women can walk alone after dark) and easy to get around the city. Half a block from Llano Park, 3 blocks to Santo Domingo church where performances are most every night on an outdoor stage and 6 or 8 blocks to the Zocalo. Markets on street corners and major markets at certain locations in the city and in the towns surrounding the city. Tours are available or you can take a local bus for 80cents.
Our room was #7 on the back courtyard it was beautiful. The staff is friendly and accomodating.
Teresa and Lucia keep a very close watch on all the transpires. They are very pleasant and helpful on where to go and what to see. Both speak English. Discounts at many restaurants are available with coupons they provide. Although, we were very pleased with the reasonable prices for dinner in most restaurants.
Free phone to U.S. and Canada and a computer to share with guests was often available in spite of the many guests.
Interacting with other guests was helpful for suggestions on what to see or where to go, also.
We stayed 11 days and had no complaint with anything.
It is an inexpensive , clean and comfortable place to stay.

“Cute, but noisy.”

We were a little disappointed after reading the reviews. We were shown to our double room which was so small you would have had to step over the suitcases to get in and out of bed. I requested a bigger room and was taken to a lovely room at no extra cost. However, it opened onto the breakfast area that meant no lazy mornings, get up with the early birds and talk in whispers as everyone is eating right outside your door. Also, being near the front of the property the road noise was very significant all night. The hot water was so limited we got caught on the first morning, a normal length shower meant a cold one for the next person. The internet was free but not able to be used after a specific time so was fairly useless for us as by the time we got in in the evening we were told it was too late, why I don't know. The ultimate farce was at checking out, I put our keys down on the timber front desk to be told off as the sign apparently said (in Spanish) not to put anything on the desk. What is the point of having a desk/bench in a hotel if you can't put anything on it! If it is that precious then there should be some covering over it, it looked like a normal timber bench to me.

“Enjoyable Place, Great Location”

Las Mariposas

I stayed at Las Mariposas for 5 days the end of February / beginning of March 2008. Las Mariposas turned out to be exactly what I needed. The room was very clean, the bed comfortable and the service warm and quite helpful.

In an earlier review the person was complaining about the noise. Las Mariposas has 2 courtyards. The front courtyard faces the street which has some rooms which I believe would be noisier because of the cars and trucks going by. I stayed in the back courtyard which had many rooms and was very quiet.

Their continental breakfast was coffee, cereal and bread. I love the different Mexican breads and thus this was great. The location is 1 block from the park El Llano which is a large tree shaded park that is a great place to hang out and read a book or people watch. Right next to the hotel is the English lending library which I stopped by. The bulletin board at the English lending library is a great place to see what is happening in the city and things to do and see. I found a flyer there on a 2 hour church tour given twice a week which was a fascinating tour of some historical churches and local history.

There are some great restaurants near the hotel. My favorite was La Olla which served excellent and well presented dishes.

The hotel is 8 blocks from the Zocalo. I really enjoyed the walk to the Zocalo because I could swing by the Santo Domino church and its plaza on the way there as well as some interesting museums and streets. Some of the key markets are a few blocks south of the Zocalo and thus some more walking to get to the markets.

The Zocalo itself was a great place to hang out. It was always busy and thus I was thankful for the respite of getting away from it that the hotel provided.

They were able to arrange tours at the hotel where they would pick you up at the hotel. I didn’t take advantage of these as most would leave at 10:00 am and I was out and about early as the best light for photography was early in the morning.

Though Las Mariposas doesn’t have all the amenities of higher end hotels it was exactly what I needed and was looking for and was a great value for what I got.

“Great Experience”

Las Mariposas

5 of 5 stars
West St. Paul, MN

We stayed at Mariposas for 4 nights. It's a cozy place. The rooms are spare but comfortable and it's in a neighborhood that's easily accessible by foot to the zocalo, but much quieter than the zocalo. The staff could not have been more kind and accomodating. They let us call free to the US when we had a problem with our bank, internet was available, breakfasts were simple but good. My only complaint was that being in a courtyard set up our room (#12) didnt have much cross-ventilation (just a door, no windows). On a hot night this could be issue. That aside, we thought Mariposas was a great bargain and would stay there again. There's also a nice wine shop, La Cava, on Gómez Farías 212-B. Also a decent grocery store a couple of blocks away. The two parks nearby are a nice oasis as well. We highly recommend Mariposas.
