My husband and I, as well as two other couples, returned home yesterday from a week at The Royal Sands in Cancun, Mexico. Our experience at this resort was exceptional, and we would definitely recommend this resort to those who are looking for a great place to stay in Cancun that is close enough to the "life of the town" but also remote enough that you can relax!
We stayed in a two-bedroom suite, complete with a comfortable living room, kitchen, two bedrooms and two bathrooms. This resort is exceptionally CLEAN - the housekeeping staff is wonderful and clearly takes pride in making this place beautiful inside and out, on a daily basis. Additionally, we received top-notch service from the rest of the resort staff ... everyone from the front desk personnel to the servers and bartenders ... these people truly put their hearts into making YOUR vacation experience wonderful. They are all so friendly and on top of that, we were very pleased with the prices of the food and drinks in the resort restaurants and bars. You will pretty much pay about the same as what you would here in the USA for drinks and food. Best of all, the pool bars (which are swim up, with stools right in the water) have happy hour starting at 3:00 p.m. everyday, at which point many cocktails are half off! $3 for mixed drinks ... can't beat it, and they give you free chips and salsa too! We had several dinners at the resort restaurants. Again, the service was excellent, and the food was out of this world. La Veranda has great nightly specials and the food was GREAT! We also had dinner at Hacienda Sisal, right on the grounds of the Royal Sands. Again, food and service were top notch (we did not go on a night when there was a live show).
In terms of getting around - it was quite easy. The Cancun bus runs pretty much non-stop and will take you anywhere for about $.65 per person each way. The Royal Sands is only about a 10 minute bus ride to the "heart" of Cancun's nightlife / downtown area (think Senor Frogs, Carlos and Charlie's, etc.). We definitely recommend hopping a bus rather than taking a taxi. We never took one but heard they are a bit expensive.
If you want to do one of those dinner cruises, you will have a few options through Thomas Moore Travel (located in the resort). We did the Pirate ship one and would HIGHLY recommend it. It was 100 times better than we even thought it would be. Extremely entertaining, good food (I had lobster, my husband had steak)and LOTS of fun, for families, couples or singles. Definitely worth the money!
Our only disappointment with the Royal Sands is that they do not provide free access to a fitness facility to guests. We did a lot of research online before we left, and planned to utilize the gym. We were excited because the web site shows that there are daily aerobics classes and many other fitness activities at the gym. We learned shortly after our arrival that there is a $10 cost PER DAY to use the gym. My opinion is that this should be INCLUDED for a resort of this caliber. Quite diappointing, but rather than sulking about it, we just hopped into the main pool at 10:00 for water aerobics a few days (this is free).
Lastly, know that the resort will assign you a personal concierge during your stay. Our concierge was Gloria and at first she annoyed me because I felt like she was just being friendly to sucker us into a timeshare presentation. As it turned out, she really WAS just trying to be a resource for us ... she invited us to free taco parties and cocktail events, was available to answer questions, etc. We did go to the timeshare presentation at the Royal Sands, because we own at a resort in Las Vegas and were interested in comparing the Royal Resorts package to the one we own ... this was our choice; they did not badger us about it the way they do at most resorts.
Overall, we definitely recommend this resort and would stay here again for our next trip to Cancun!
