The Grand Avalon lived up to our expectations!!! The hotel staff was wonderful and the food was great!!!
I dont know why the previous reviewer got sick, but i doubt it was the food. My family (5 adults, 3 kids ages 1,3, and 9) ate at the hotel 3 times a day, and never once got sick.....The food is fresh, and is authentic.....Meals were changed frequently, which gaves us a good variety to choose from.....Not one of us, including my kids, complained about the food, on the contrary, we were glad/happy that the food was great..
Both swimming pools are about 5 feet deep, but that was perfect for us....Never really thought about the depth of the pool while I was there, only now when i ready the previous reviewer's comments....I guess, if you want an olympic size pool, look somewhere else...
As far the beach goes, there is hardly any at all....That was the ONLY downfall in our eyes *which is why i gave the hotel 4 out of 5)......But, dont make this a heartache...Simple cure is to walk 15 yards to your right or left, and bam, more beach. There are no beachchairs on the beach, so you are going to have lay down on the sand or on a towel.....
I read a prior review that stated this hotel was not handicap friendly...I disagree....I personally saw handicap accessible rooms on the main building....everything is handicap accessible, wheelchair ramps are everywhere, and lead to almost everywhere.....I know because we used the ramps to push our boys on strollers throughout the hotel.....Also note, there IS an elevator to all floors on the main building, so if you need an elevator for whatever reason, make sure you reserve a room on the main building.....there aren't elevators on the other buildings....Need an elevator? Request a room on the main building where check-in/lobby are at!!!
We also visited the the Avalon hotel at the Isla Mujeres, we had all inclusive, so we were able to use everything just like at the Avalon Grand..however, we didnt care too much for their food or their beach......But, the snorkeling tour from the Avalon hotel at isla mujeres was awesome, it costs $15 bucks, which is not included in the all inclusive.......I recommend you visit the public beaches at Isla Mujeres instead.
Overall, we were glad we chose this hotel....This is not a party hotel!!! it's more of a small hotel compared to others we saw.....very family friendly, and a quiet/relaxing atmosphere!!!
Everyone we talked to at the hotel seemed to be enjoying themselves!!! Staff was awesome and helpful!!!
One more thing, you will get hit up only one time for the typical time share spill...You either can follow along (at your own risk), or just say no at the beginning of the request...That simple!! We were never asked again...We played the game, listened to their spill, got our Chichitnitza trip for $120, for a family of 8!!!!..and we never bought the timeshare...the timeshare folks weren't too happy....Also, the spill really only lasts 90 minutes.,,not like others that i've heard that last half a day to a day long!!
Enjoy your trip!!
