“More than we ever expected!!”

Avalon Grand Cancun

5 of 5 stars
Vicksburg, MS
Jun 29, 2008

After reading previous reviews we were a little skeptical about going to this hotel, but I can say from the time we got there until we left (5 nights) we had an amazing time! The staff was great: Alex (the activities director) and Rebecca (our waitress) were the best! Our check-in and check-out were very quick...our taxi was waiting in the lobby 15 minutes early on check-out morning. We had a group of 6, 3 rooms, and never felt that our service wasn't up to par. As far as the rooms go, they were absolutely beautiful. The only complaint was the air conditioner, however we found that to be a complaint at every place you go in Cancun. We were all-inclusive so we can't complain about the food....it saved us tons from eating out every day, 3 times a day!! The breakfast buffett was great. I can say the food at the pool bar was excellent as well. As far as the alcohol, the only beer they had was Corona, so if your not a big fan of Corona you had to drink mixed drinks. This is where Rebecca came in...between 5 of us, we drank appr. 80 margaritas and 2 fifths of Champagne in 10 hours...she kept them coming, and put up with ALL of us! The only other complaint was the beach, however again, it was the same everywhere in Cancun. As far as the previous complaint of someone getting sick, there were a few people who got sick (none of us), but the hotel called in a doctor, and prescriptions were given!! I think if you come in expecting the Ritz, you'll probably not get what your expecting, but if you come in with an average mind you'll enjoy every minute! All in all we couldn't have asked for a better time...thanks to all who made it happen!

“Will Stay Again!!”

Avalon Grand Cancun

4 of 5 stars
washington state
Jun 18, 2008

The Grand Avalon lived up to our expectations!!! The hotel staff was wonderful and the food was great!!!

I dont know why the previous reviewer got sick, but i doubt it was the food. My family (5 adults, 3 kids ages 1,3, and 9) ate at the hotel 3 times a day, and never once got sick.....The food is fresh, and is authentic.....Meals were changed frequently, which gaves us a good variety to choose from.....Not one of us, including my kids, complained about the food, on the contrary, we were glad/happy that the food was great..

Both swimming pools are about 5 feet deep, but that was perfect for us....Never really thought about the depth of the pool while I was there, only now when i ready the previous reviewer's comments....I guess, if you want an olympic size pool, look somewhere else...

As far the beach goes, there is hardly any at all....That was the ONLY downfall in our eyes *which is why i gave the hotel 4 out of 5)......But, dont make this a heartache...Simple cure is to walk 15 yards to your right or left, and bam, more beach. There are no beachchairs on the beach, so you are going to have lay down on the sand or on a towel.....

I read a prior review that stated this hotel was not handicap friendly...I disagree....I personally saw handicap accessible rooms on the main building....everything is handicap accessible, wheelchair ramps are everywhere, and lead to almost everywhere.....I know because we used the ramps to push our boys on strollers throughout the hotel.....Also note, there IS an elevator to all floors on the main building, so if you need an elevator for whatever reason, make sure you reserve a room on the main building.....there aren't elevators on the other buildings....Need an elevator? Request a room on the main building where check-in/lobby are at!!!

We also visited the the Avalon hotel at the Isla Mujeres, we had all inclusive, so we were able to use everything just like at the Avalon Grand..however, we didnt care too much for their food or their beach......But, the snorkeling tour from the Avalon hotel at isla mujeres was awesome, it costs $15 bucks, which is not included in the all inclusive.......I recommend you visit the public beaches at Isla Mujeres instead.

Overall, we were glad we chose this hotel....This is not a party hotel!!! it's more of a small hotel compared to others we saw.....very family friendly, and a quiet/relaxing atmosphere!!!

Everyone we talked to at the hotel seemed to be enjoying themselves!!! Staff was awesome and helpful!!!

One more thing, you will get hit up only one time for the typical time share spill...You either can follow along (at your own risk), or just say no at the beginning of the request...That simple!! We were never asked again...We played the game, listened to their spill, got our Chichitnitza trip for $120, for a family of 8!!!!..and we never bought the timeshare...the timeshare folks weren't too happy....Also, the spill really only lasts 90 minutes.,,not like others that i've heard that last half a day to a day long!!

Enjoy your trip!!

“There is no beach at all, poor pool, you can't walk on the beach”

I went to this hotel and is very awful, the hotel is pretty yes, but when you go on vacation you want a good place to stay not just pretty. All hotels in Cancun are pretty but the difference is the location in the city, and the hotel features.

First there is no beach tere is nothing of sand so the location sucks, the waves crash directly in the hotel. So we had to move to other public beach in order to visit the beach. and that is a shame becouse they charge you as an hotel in front of the beach so you pay a higher price just to watch it but not for enjoy it. Another thing, we went to a kukulkan plaza and we decide to return to the hotel by walking on the beach but exactly one hotel before Avalon there is no beach so we couldnt acces to the hotel we had to return again by walking to the plaza and take the bus. I was so angry and tired.

The pool realy sucks there are 2 pools but is only 4.3feet deep in the whole poole, you barely can swim.

There is no signal for the celular phone on the room so if you are waiting for a call you will wait a long time.

The animation staff are not funny

My wife got sick with the food on the hotel and the staff is not qualified to tell you where to go or what to do in case of emergency. So we had to find an hospital on our own

The TV cable reception was so blurry

You can't control de air con, you just can turn it on or off

The check in tookme more than expected the gave me my room very late but if you leave your room later there are problems. So they are good to charge you but not for give you

In resume the hotel has a lot of Cons and the Pros are just like any hotel, clean, pretty, good view, just the ordinary

Unfortunately since hurricane Wilma in 2005 the majority of resorts in Cancun have suffered from the loss of beach and the amount of beach front varies on a daily bases. Avalon is currently offering organized complimentary transportation to and from the Playa Cabana Beach Club for those who wish to spend time on the beach. As well, any guest of the Avalon Grand Cancun has access to our sister resort the Avalon Baccara, which is two doors down and the Avalon Reef Club in Isla Mujeres.

“Wonderfully Grand”

Avalon Grand Cancun

While staying at the Avalon Baccara from May 1st to May 8th for our honeymoon, we got quite familiar with the Avalon Grand. If you stay at the Baccara you can use the Grand’s facilities and eat there for no additional charge. The food was fantastic and the menu was constantly changing. The pool areas are very nice and never crowded. There is no beach at the Grand and the ocean does come right up to the seawall, but the Baccara is only 200 yards away and has plenty of beach area. We had an issue with the water one night at the Baccara, and they let us use an empty room at the Grand to shower. The room was decorated very nicely in a contemporary design with an awesome flat screen TV. The bathroom was huge and had a great shower. There was a nice kitchen area and a great dining room table.
The staff was very attentive and helpful. There were several events with Mexican dancers and local entertainment. The fitness center at the Grand was fantastic as well, and I was shocked to see such nice equipment at a resort like that. But, most of the time was instead spent at the awesome lobby bar having drinks. The décor of the lobby and bar area is very nice and well kept.
My advice however, is to stay at the uncrowded Baccara which has a very large beach area and amazing facilities, and eat at the Grand. It’s a great combination that made for a perfect honeymoon.

“The Avalon is Grand”

Avalon Grand Cancun

My husband and i just returned from our trip to Cancun. We stayed at the Avalon Grand, which was highly recommended to us by our son and his girlfriend who went in January. We had a fabulous vacation. The hotel is kept in immaculate condition by the friendly, courteous staff. We arrived at noon, expecting that we would be told that we couldn't check in yet. Instead, we were immediately given room keys and were upgraded to a suite overlooking the pool with an ocean view. The room and view were spectacular. The king size bed was very firm with an abundance of pillows, and even more extras in the closet. The flat screen TV swiveled so it could be viewed in bed or in the living room area. The terrace was small but had room enough for 2 chairs and a small table. The setting is very Mediterranean with lots of winding staircases, stucco walls, and limestone steps. It is important to know that there are stairs all over, which was fine for us, but could present a problem for some guests. There is an elevator in one area, but it does not access all of the hotel areas. The infinity pool was breathtaking. The rest of the pool area had ample lounge chairs overlooking the ocean. I loved that there was lots of sun and lots of shade as well. The second pool area with the hot tub had the most comfortable beds for lounging. The entire outdoor area has a fabulous breeze all day keeping you cool and comfortable, despite the heat. We had the all-inclusive plan which was a great bargain, however, steak, shrimp and lobster were not part of the plan. They could be purchased for $25 extra, which we felt was steep and unfair, as the hotel website information does not explain this. In addition, the only restaurant open was buffet all the time. The food was good, but we were not aware that the other sit-down restaurant was closed for renovations. However, we walked over to the sister property, Avalon Baccara,.and had a very good sit-down dinner. The public areas are not air-conditoned over there, and the restaurant air-conditioner was also not working, so it was a bit sticky as the humidity in Cancun is high. We booked transfers to and from the airport with the hotel, and the service was prompt and courteous for each trip. Overall, our experience was wonderful.
