“Not the best choice”

Ocean Hotel

Expect a motel similar to an American Motel 6. The rooms are clean, but very old. They claim to have renovated in 2008, but I saw no sign of that. This is a "feeder" hotel in the Sunset Group. They want you to buy a time share at one of the better hotels that they offer. Although this hotel does have a beach, it is on the bay side of the ocean, so do not expect pretty ocean front or a good place to swim. The hotel's location is not in the hotel zone. You must get transportation to go shopping, dinner, or to the clubs. Air conditioning is also minimal. For the amount of money I paid for my vacation, I was extremely disappointed about being placed in this hotel.

“Great service but construction”

The Ocean Hotel in Cancun, Mexico has a few things going for it. 1) Price, 2) Great Service 3) Good Food. If you are traveling on a budget and are looking for a place to relax away from the crowds, this is the place for you. The staff is courteous and goes out of their way to help you. In my case, my niece became ill during our stay. The staff was kind enough to help her get some medical attention at 4 a.m.

Now the negatives. 1) Location, 2) Construction, 3) Room Locks. The hotel is located between two marinas. This is great if you're looking to do water activities but not so great if you're looking for a hotel with a nice beach. You will have to travel a bit to get to a good beach. Secondly, I would advise to wait until the hotel construction has been completed. The current status of the hotel rooms are acceptable but some areas of the hotel need a face lift, i.e. the pool bar and lobby bar. Lastly, the room doors AND locks need to be improved. Anyone can gain access if they really wanted to.

Hope this helps!

p.s. Get to know the activities coordinators, they can show you the ins and outs of the Cancun nightlife.

just got back and what can i say 6 people in our group
and we had a wonderful time the staff can not do enough for
you especially zazil, antonio, daniel, guillermo, and ariel in the
lobby bar the maids were round every day with clean bedding
and towels the clubs were good the weather high 90:s went
to xcaret and swam in the under ground caves the show at
night highly recommended.
now the downside food is good but a bit repetitive if you go to
THE CITY NIGHTCLUB you need to be under 22-24 to really
enjoy it and entertainment on site is poor although they try
the entertainment staff are more interested in getting
you to a club.
we stayed here 3 yrs ago but it has really changed for
the better

“PLEASANT SURPRISE”

Ocean Hotel

4 of 5 stars
California
Jun 16, 2008

My best friend and I purchased a package that included several all inclusive resorts and hotels in cancun, and also a second trip to Florida for 5days and 4 nights, WoW!!!! what a deal.
The purpose of purcahsing was to attend my sister in laws wedding in cancun at The Moon Palace (Absolutely Breath Taking)
When our package arrived for us to select which resort we wished to reside in for the week we found in the fine print that you have to book your stay 45 days in advance or pay an acceleration fee of $50 and basically settle for one of the "lower scaled resorts/ hotels. NOT GOOD!!!
Needless to say I paid the acceleration fee ( I was the brides sister in law/ stylist/ make up artist/support) there was no way I could not be there.
The company booked my 6day 5 night stay at the Ocean Hotel because it was the only hotel that was available.I immediately went online to see the hotel and read the ratings/comments.
almost all of the ratings were very negative, there were a few here and there that were on the positive side. I called the agent and asked him about the hotel and and the reviews(I asked him to be as honest as possible) He explained that the hotelsand resorts that are included in these packages are apart of a company that sells time shares, he explained that when the copany purchased the hotel it was a disaster but it was under heavy renovation. I also raised a point about how the "renovations" might affect our stay, he said I had nothing to be worried about. My last question was, "If you were planning a vactaion with your family, would you stay at this hotel? and he said yes.
So........after a lot of Praying and optomistic thinking I decided to finalize my decision.

Upon our arrival we saw our driver there to pick us up promptly, he was very pleasant and helpful. Two other people rode with us and were staying a few miles away from our hotel. We passed by some of the most gorgeous resorts and hotels before arriving to the ours.

The outside of the hotel was a bit shabby, you could tell that it was a work in progress, but when we got inside we were pleasantly surprised.

The people at the front desk were very friendly and helpful, They hotel had 3 floors and our room was on the second floor.
The employees there didnt allow us to carry anything on our own.
They welcomed us to relax in the lobby while they deliverd our luggage to our room and process our information in the sytem.
The seating was so comfortable i almost wanted to ask if we could have the couch delivered to our room.
10 minutes later the bellboy came down and showed us to our room .............Nice!!
The floors were really nice, the beds were beyond comfortable, although we didnt have a bath tub our shower was so nice you hardly noticed that there wasnt a tub. The room had a vanity and a spacious closet. A dresser and a small refrigerator. Our Tv was very small but with the view that we had from the balcony we hardly ever watched TV.
The swimming pool was beautiful.....never over full!!!!
The food was good and the service was wonderful. We had free transportation, sometimes the driver would take us a bit further then he was sapose to just to make it easier on us.
After staying at the Ocean club, I dont understand why the ratings were so negative.
We made friends with almost everyone who worked there, they are expecting our return for next year.

(The bride and groom's family stayed at one of the higher end resorts and they were not happy, they admitted that they wished that had stayed with us at the Ocean Hotel, while the other resorts were more visually appealing they lacked quality in service)

Would I stay there again? In a heart beat!!!!

My Trip was a dream come true!

“misleading timeshare group”

Ocean Hotel

Jun 11, 2008

Booked family vacation through special offer from corporate vacation fax. IRR Marketing Co. misrepresented hotel and location of hotels. We were told we would be staying at either Sunset Royal or Sunset Lagoon, only to discover that we had been down graded to the Ocean Hotel because of the size of our party. The number of people and rooms were disclosed upfront prior to purchasing vacation package and were told that would not matter.

The hotel is older without elevators. The A/C didn't work in one of the rooms, asked hotel desk 3 times to repair, then argued with them to change rooms. New room started cool but ended up hot by the end of the day. Could not get another room, had to double up in the rooms that had cold A/C to beable to sleep.
The pool was nice but they never had towels by the end of the day to use and we were always told that none could be obtained.
Food was okay, but it was the same everyday which we got tired of. The beach was nice, but you need water shoes because of the rocks.

Time share tour was horrible. I explained the deceptive marketing tatics and was told we should not have expected those hotels for the price we had paid for the corporate vacation package and that we should not hold it agaisnt the hotel for the marketers sales tackets. Representative kept referring to the Ocean Hotel as a less than standard hotel that had no association with the Sunset Hotels, which I discovered later had no truth to it. After several managers tried different sales approachs on us, my husband got angry and got into an arguement with a Closer Manager who finally ask us to leave.

It was our first time to Cancun and did not realize that any of the tours or fun things (snorkeling, parasailing, sailing, jungle tour, mayan ruins tour) required cash. There were very few places that took credit cards. They also wanted US dollars or would charge a surcharge for the local money. The buses were they best way to get around, however, if you didn't have exact change you rarely would get back the correct change if any. The tour drivers that picked you up at the hotel, often tried to charge you again for the transfer that you had already paid for in your package. If you are good at debating with everybody you come in contact with, this may be the place for you. You usually win after I lengthy debate.

All in all, I am accustom to the Hotel Employees trying to accomadate your wants and needs and that did not happen for my group. I will pay the extra money next time to have better experience in a 4/5 star resort in the future.
