My girlfriend and I stayed here from April 12-16, 2008. We did our research on-line prior to selecting a hotel and chose the Krystal primarily because of price and location but were a little apprehensive given some of the negative reviews. After staying here, we think some of the complaints are overblown and were very satisfied with our stay. If you are looking for a luxury resort with so many amenities you don’t have to leave the property then this might not be your place. But if you are looking for a comfortable environment, clean room, the BEST location in Cancun for proximity to bars, clubs, and restaurants, and a fantastic pool area, then stay at the Krystal. Here is a rundown of my opinions on the issues brought up in other reviews:
BEACH – OK, so the hotel doesn’t have a large beach directly in front of the hotel, but one is literally steps away. The pool is situated on a wall directly overlooking the ocean. There are steps from the pool area leading to a beach directly south of the hotel that is right behind the building housing the Hard Rock Café and The City nightclub. It’s not a sprawling beach, but big enough with incredible clear blue water that’s not too rough and a clean sandy area to lounge on.
POOL – Awesome. Unique set up changing from shallow to deep (8 ft.), narrow to wide areas, a waterfall, raised sunbathing platforms right in the pool surrounded by water, small overpasses over the pool to walk from one side to the other. The swim up bar is currently closed but there is a cabana with bartenders who will make any drink you’d like plus take food orders. In addition there are servers walking around taking orders, so access to food and drink is not a problem. Figure about $7 US for a daiquiri/pina coloda type drink. It was never too crowded and there were plenty of lounging chairs so the “towel game” I’ve read about on other forums is not played here. Those complaining about the lack of a beach should have bellied up to the edge of the pool to gaze into the ocean in front of them more often.
LOCATION - Can’t be beat if you are in Cancun to be a part of the club and restaurant scene. Right next door to Coco Bongo, Carlos and Charlies, and the Forum Mall. Short walk to Senor Frogs. We only had to take a bus to and from La Isla Mall and didn’t take a cab the entire time. If you are looking for something more secluded, then it probably would be a good idea to look elsewhere, although we weren’t bothered by the “noise” at all.
TIMESHARE HUSTLERS – We did receive a call our first morning inviting us to a complementary breakfast and asking about our plans for activities in Cancun. Our research on Trip Advisor proved helpful here because we recognized right away that this would likely turn into a sales pitch for a time share or solicitation for excursions, etc. There are people sitting at a table right in front of the elevator in the lobby that are there to sell you excursions. We had our own plans before we showed up so we didn’t need there services, but other than the one phone call, never felt hassled at all. Just understand that you will be approached in some fashion and be ready to not accept anything you aren’t interested in and you’ll be fine.
ROOM – Clean. Decent sized. Beds are firm but comfortable. I’ll agree with some, the bathroom was “outdated” but we didn’t care. Water was hot and cold and the pressure was OK. They should take down that plexiglass deal in front of the tub and add a shower curtain. We did have an issue with the tub drain backing up so we had to stand in water while showering. We reported and thought it got better but were never sure if they actually fixed it. Not a huge deal though.
SERVICE – Thought it was great. Check in and out were fast. We didn’t get an ocean view but checked in on a Saturday. We were told we could possibly get one later in our stay for an extra cost but decided not to worry about it once we got our room and realized how convenient it was to get to the beach area anyway. There are no balconies in the rooms so it really wasn’t a big deal to face the ocean to us. We did get the non-smoking room and king-sized bed we asked for and never felt “duped” by the room facing the street. Maid service was efficient. Bartenders both in the lobby bar and pool area cabana were quick and friendly and clued us into the 2 for 1 happy hours.
To recap, I would recommend staying here if a luxury room isn’t a top priority. If you plan on spending your time at a very nice pool, the beach, or out on the town rather than in the room, the Krystal is a great place to stay, especially for the price. A few plugs for fun places we visited include Coco Bongo, Senor Frogs, Dolphin Discovery at Isla Mujeres, and La Madonna restaurant at the La Isla Mall . Have fun.
