NH Krystal Cancun

Apr 21, 2008

My girlfriend and I stayed here from April 12-16, 2008. We did our research on-line prior to selecting a hotel and chose the Krystal primarily because of price and location but were a little apprehensive given some of the negative reviews. After staying here, we think some of the complaints are overblown and were very satisfied with our stay. If you are looking for a luxury resort with so many amenities you don’t have to leave the property then this might not be your place. But if you are looking for a comfortable environment, clean room, the BEST location in Cancun for proximity to bars, clubs, and restaurants, and a fantastic pool area, then stay at the Krystal. Here is a rundown of my opinions on the issues brought up in other reviews:

BEACH – OK, so the hotel doesn’t have a large beach directly in front of the hotel, but one is literally steps away. The pool is situated on a wall directly overlooking the ocean. There are steps from the pool area leading to a beach directly south of the hotel that is right behind the building housing the Hard Rock Café and The City nightclub. It’s not a sprawling beach, but big enough with incredible clear blue water that’s not too rough and a clean sandy area to lounge on.

POOL – Awesome. Unique set up changing from shallow to deep (8 ft.), narrow to wide areas, a waterfall, raised sunbathing platforms right in the pool surrounded by water, small overpasses over the pool to walk from one side to the other. The swim up bar is currently closed but there is a cabana with bartenders who will make any drink you’d like plus take food orders. In addition there are servers walking around taking orders, so access to food and drink is not a problem. Figure about $7 US for a daiquiri/pina coloda type drink. It was never too crowded and there were plenty of lounging chairs so the “towel game” I’ve read about on other forums is not played here. Those complaining about the lack of a beach should have bellied up to the edge of the pool to gaze into the ocean in front of them more often.

LOCATION - Can’t be beat if you are in Cancun to be a part of the club and restaurant scene. Right next door to Coco Bongo, Carlos and Charlies, and the Forum Mall. Short walk to Senor Frogs. We only had to take a bus to and from La Isla Mall and didn’t take a cab the entire time. If you are looking for something more secluded, then it probably would be a good idea to look elsewhere, although we weren’t bothered by the “noise” at all.

TIMESHARE HUSTLERS – We did receive a call our first morning inviting us to a complementary breakfast and asking about our plans for activities in Cancun. Our research on Trip Advisor proved helpful here because we recognized right away that this would likely turn into a sales pitch for a time share or solicitation for excursions, etc. There are people sitting at a table right in front of the elevator in the lobby that are there to sell you excursions. We had our own plans before we showed up so we didn’t need there services, but other than the one phone call, never felt hassled at all. Just understand that you will be approached in some fashion and be ready to not accept anything you aren’t interested in and you’ll be fine.

ROOM – Clean. Decent sized. Beds are firm but comfortable. I’ll agree with some, the bathroom was “outdated” but we didn’t care. Water was hot and cold and the pressure was OK. They should take down that plexiglass deal in front of the tub and add a shower curtain. We did have an issue with the tub drain backing up so we had to stand in water while showering. We reported and thought it got better but were never sure if they actually fixed it. Not a huge deal though.

SERVICE – Thought it was great. Check in and out were fast. We didn’t get an ocean view but checked in on a Saturday. We were told we could possibly get one later in our stay for an extra cost but decided not to worry about it once we got our room and realized how convenient it was to get to the beach area anyway. There are no balconies in the rooms so it really wasn’t a big deal to face the ocean to us. We did get the non-smoking room and king-sized bed we asked for and never felt “duped” by the room facing the street. Maid service was efficient. Bartenders both in the lobby bar and pool area cabana were quick and friendly and clued us into the 2 for 1 happy hours.

To recap, I would recommend staying here if a luxury room isn’t a top priority. If you plan on spending your time at a very nice pool, the beach, or out on the town rather than in the room, the Krystal is a great place to stay, especially for the price. A few plugs for fun places we visited include Coco Bongo, Senor Frogs, Dolphin Discovery at Isla Mujeres, and La Madonna restaurant at the La Isla Mall . Have fun.

“Not Recommended”

NH Krystal Cancun

I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. This was our honeymoon trip so we booked an ocean view room non-smoking with a king size bed. When we arrived, we were a bit disappointed at the run down look of the outside. We went to check in and they didn't have a king size bed available in non-smoking so they offered us a room with 2 'queen' size beds. The beds were not queen but full size. Every surface in our room was stained. The room was not clean either. There was toothpaste on the countertop and a plastic razor cover on the floor. There was dirt caked on the baseboards and everything metal in the room was rusted. The hair dryer didn't work and we had a channel that was showing an adult movie which would have been terrifying if a child had been channel surfing. The room also didn't have an alarm clock. We tried to get a new room but they couldn't until the next day. We could hear water running through our entire stay. At first, we thought it was someones shower or toilet but it never stopped.

The next day came and we were again denied a different room but we did get a new room on our 3rd day with a king size bed. Other than the bed size, this room was exactly the same as our other room as far as stains and cleanliness. This room did have an alarm clock but it didn't work. The hair dryer blew the circuit breaker everytime I used it and it took the staff up to 30 minutes to reset it. This was not good when we were on a schedule and had to be somewhere for a tour etc. It got to the point that we had to laugh everytime we discovered something else that was wrong with our room. What topped our whole stay off was the ceiling above the toilet started leaking. So as you were sitting on the toilet, you were getting wet. We had no idea where that water was coming from.

The breakfast buffet was nice but they started to run out of certain food items by 10:00am and the buffet went from 8-12.

The only positive things I can say about this hotel is that the ocean view was great, the pool area was also nice and the location is good for the nightlife. The staff in the buffet/restaurant was very friendly. The other staff was friendly but not very accommodating in correcting our problems.

“Beautiful location, lovely holiday, Club standard a must.”

We stayed at the NH Krystal for nine nights with our 15 year old son . The location of the hotel is fantastic, our room on the seventh floor had a beautiful full view of the sea and the pool area was spotlessly clean and one of the warmest we have been in. We ate at the poolside bars which had enough choices for a lunchtime meal, but we did not try the restaurant as we like to eat out in the evenings.
We booked the Club Standard room which included a small exclusive breakfast area away from the main guests, which was exceptional. The staff there were helpful and friendly and really made the holiday pleasurable. It also acted as a main reception area for club guests and so provided excellent service. Coffee and biscuits were provided at no extra charge in the afternnons for club guests, and wine and nibbles at 6pm. We didn't use the gym, but club members could at no charge. T he only details on a negative front were that the rooms were a little dated but functional. There were guys selling excursions etc outside the hotel who we chose to ignore. We had a relaxing holiday overall.

“Nice Hotel, Excellent Pool, Great Location”

NH Krystal Cancun

4 of 5 stars
Omaha, NE
Apr 18, 2008

My boyfriend and I just returned from a great trip in Cancun! We spent 4 days at the NH Krystal and also enjoyed some very fun nights on the town!

After reading several reviews about this hotel, I was unsure of what to expect at the NH Krystal. What I found was a very nice hotel that exceeded my expectations. Sure, it's not a luxurious beach palace, but it easily met all of our needs and was very comfortable.

The first day we were in Cancun, we spent most of our time by or in the pool. It was amazing! The setup of the pool is very cool, and we loved swimming in the deeper end by the waterfall. There is no swim-up bar, but that didn't matter. We were very happy with the wait staff and their service. They make a great Miami Vice there! Also, the pool was never very busy, and there were always tons of chairs to lay out on! Plus, because the pool is up against the ocean, it had a breathtaking view!

As for the rooms... our room was big and comfy. We didn't have the oceanside of the hotel, but we didn't mind. We didn't plan on spending much time in the room anyway. The bathroom was average. Our only problem really was the shower, because it drained very slowly. We called the front desk about this problem and requested towels. They were very speedy and efficient in meeting our needs.

The hotel bar is neat, and they offer some good deals for happy hour. We didn't try the food in this bar, but we did order a tasty sandwich at the pool bar. Although the food was good, I wouldn't go "All Inclusive" at the Krystal. There are so many amazing restaurants and nightclubs within minutes of this hotel! I highly recommend you go out and try them!

The BEST part about this hotel is the LOCATION!!! It's a short walk to the nearest mall, restaurants and best nightclubs in Cancun! You don't need to take a taxi anywhere, and the bus is easy to catch off the main street if you need it. Seriously, if you're going to Cancun for the nightlife, you must stay at the Krystal or somewhere near it! You won't regret it!

“BEWARE OF PROMOTIONS !!! + DONT STAY IN CANCUN - GO TO RIVIERA MAYA !”

NH Krystal Cancun

2 of 5 stars
los angeles

FIRST OF ALL, the entire Cancun experience would have been MUCH better if we stayed in one of the resorts in RIVIERA MAYA, NOT in Cancun itself.

1. CANCUN is mainly for rowdy and drunk teenagers who have no interest in history and culture or any kind of exploration except sexual one, who want to do nothing but party at night. The other category of people who stay in Cancun are lazy boring and fat vacationers and stressed out professionals who just want to chill out , relax and again do nothing interesting - no activities basically - just relaxing by the pool and eating and drinking. IF YOU ARE ONE OF THE ABOVE categories DO STAY IN CANCUN

2. IF you want to explore the region, snorkle, see the pyramids, visit mayan shows etc - then DO NOT STAY IN CANCUN, go to Riviera Maya - simple reason is Riviera Maya is much closer to all the attractions - Cancun is at least 1.5 hour drive away from important attractions such as EXCARET, XEL-HA, TULUM (actually Tulum is 2.5 hour drive)

3. ABOUT THE NH KRYSTAL HOTEL:

ACCOMODATIONS WERE EXCELLENT - BEAUTIFUL OCEAN VIEW - WE STAYED ON 2ND FLOOR , you could hear the waves in close proximity; the food was very good downstairs in the cafeteria. WE DID NOT BUY ALL INCLUSIVE b/c what's the point of buying all inclusive if we were gone every day for the whole day?

4. VERY IMPORTANT - STAY AWAY FROM ANYONE WHO IS TRYING TO CATCH YOUR ATTENTION WITH A PROMOTION OFFER !! DO NOT BUY ANY PROMOTIONS , DO NOT TALK TO THEM !! Outside of this hotel and many others there are guys dressed in white standing in a little booth trying to catch your attention when you are passing by !! DO NOT TALK TO THEM , AND DO NOT AGREE TO ANY PROMOTIONS - THEY ARE TRYING TO CHEAT YOU OUT OF YOUR MONEY AND WASTE YOUR TIME!!

ALSO TRY NOT TO BUY ANY TOURS - JUST RENT A CAR AND DRIVE AROUND BY YOURSELF !!

I had the misfortune of being suckered into one promotion deal offered by NHKrystal hotel - 2 days of car rental for $20/day and the rest $55 /day + 1 free lunch. In exchange I had to agree to a promotion session that was supposed to last 90 minutes .

During the promotion I was pressured by 4 different agents to buy various vacation packages - one of them amounting to no less than $30.000!!! The promotion session lasted 3 hours instead of the promised 90 minutes. I wasted basically half a day and was late to Excaret theme park which caused me to return to Excaret on another day again and pay double for Excaret !! Instead of saving money i wasted it and wasted time because of these fraudulent crooks.

What they do during the promotion session is they ask you a bunch of personal questions and trying to become sort of like "your friend" - and they are showing you the best hotel rooms they got and throwing all these numbers at you with all those incentives and pressuring you into signing up RIGHT THERE ON THE SPOT.

Of course the more they talked the less I was willing to even consider singing up for any of their deals. By the end it was clear that they are there to cheat me and many other tourists out of their money and of course I did not pay them a dime, but I wasted my precious vacation time.

It was really SAD to see American families in that cafeteria being BRAINWASHED by the sales agents in exchange for one free lunch. I did not let them cheat me out of my money - they only cheated me out of my time, but many many people get cheated by promotion agents there ! BEWARE OF PROMOTION AGENTS , DO NOT TALK TO THEM, DO NOT AGREE TO ANYTHING, AND TRY TO NOT BUY ANY TOURS. IF YOU CAN , EXPLORE BY YOURSELF AND YOU'LL HAVE MUCH BETTER CONTROL OVER THE SITUATION AND YOU WILL SEE WHAT YOU WANT TO SEE AND NOT WHAT IS CONVENIENT FOR THEM TO SHOW.
