We stayed at the Barcelo Costa Cancun for 2 weeks at the end of Dec 2006 and we had an excellent time.
Our room was in the refurbished section of the hotel, and the room was really nice. There are no baths, but the walk in shower cubicle was huge. We had booked a standard Deluxe room, but found that the balcony was tiny. When we complained – as we had specifically asked for a balcony, we were told that we should have asked for a terrace balcony, as they were bigger and belonged to Junior suites. But we persisted and got a free upgrade to a Junior suite. Other guests did the same and got a free upgrade as well, so don’t give in!
The Junior suite is as per the Deluxe Room but bigger and with a sofa. Also, the bathroom and walk in shower is lot bigger too with dispensers on the wall for shampoo, conditioner and shower gel. We were in the junior suite 520 (4th floor) and it was very nice - with pool and ocean view.
Only half the hotel has been refurbished so far. We saw the unrefurbished rooms and they really do look tired and dated. We were told the rooms ending 24 to 16 (i.e. 524 to 516) are in the refurbished section. Steer clear of rooms 123 & 122 (as next to bar on ground floor and by lifts - so very noisy) and rooms 224 & 223 (next door to 24hr snack bar and lifts - again very noisy). Also, rooms ending in 24 may be noisy as they face the lifts and stairwell, so you will hear the clubbers coming back in the early hours of the morning.
The hotel seemed to cater well for all age groups and is family friendly. There's a children's club for ages 4 to 11years, which my 8 year daughter loved, and the girls in the club also do babysitting and minding of babies & young children - though I think there is a small fee.
All the staff was very helpful and friendly. Although you don’t need to tip, a small tip of 20 pesos or $2 US goes a long way and is very much appreciated by the staff. The staff does not get paid much and you'll only need to tip every few days at the most.
If you do decide to tip the waiter/waitresses that serve the pool and in the restaurants, I would suggest you tip early as this will make sure you get an absolutely super service all the time.
The food at the Albatross, the main buffet restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner is ok, though you have to be careful that it’s cooked properly and are hot. For some reason the female chef at the grill section just cannot seem to cook a burger & hotdog properly, as when we used to cut it in half, we found it was stone cold in the middle.
We found that the best restaurant was the Mexican restaurant, which was an a la carte restaurant and needs to be booked up that morning (before 10am) or the day before. The other two a la carte restaurants (Gaviotas and a Spanish restaurant) were also very good as well. You can have breakfast and lunch at Gaviotas, and it’s definitely a lot nicer than Albatross.
The hotel beach is quite small – but for us, it was fine. There was a small part of the sea sectioned off for swimming – however, we just swam in the pool which was lovely, with a fountain bit in the middle that you can swim up to. The hotel offers beach towels as well. When you check in, they give you a card which you exchange for towels. You just need to hand the card in when you check out, otherwise there’ll be a charge.
The location of the hotel isn’t that great. There are only a few souvenir shops and a shop with internet use near the hotel. Also, the pirate shops (for dinner & show) are next to the hotel. However, this wasn’t a problem as there are bus stops outside the hotel, which only costs 6.5 pesos per journey, no matter how far you travel. The buses can take you to the malls down the Hotel Zone (5 mins away) or downtown to Mercado 28, Wal-Mart, Bus station etc (5-10mins). At the bus station, we took the first class AGO GL buses to Tulum, which was fairly easy to do, and saved a lot of money, compared to going on a tour.
During our stay, we checked out the Gran Caribe down the Hotel Zone. The location is nicer and the hotel itself seems a bit grander and busier than Barcelo Costa Real. Also, the beach was a lot nicer and the hotel had a long strip of lovely sandy beach. We would probably try out the Gran Caribe next time, but would return to the Barcelo Costa Cancun sometime. The Barcelo Costa Cancun is a very good hotel –and the definite plus for us is that it’s a smaller hotel and the staff are excellent.
