“Don't buy the timeshare and if you do watch out if you cancel”

Sunset Royal Cancun Resort

We didn't actually stay at the Sunset Royal, but chose to visit their site to see their timeshare program. A friend and I decided to purchase, but realized within two days that we were pressured into the sale and we decided to cancel our timeshare. This is allowed per the contract, so we returned to the Sunset Royal on two days after signing and provided a letter of cancellation. We gave the document to Mr. Manuel Novelo and were told they would give the cancellation to their legal department. Now we are being told they never recieved the letter and we will be held to the contract. We feel we were treated terribly and would like to warn other travelers about this resort.

“Royal Sunset”

We stayed at the Royal Sunset, Mar 7 -14/08. This was our 3rd visit there. The hotel is average; the pool area nice, but small. There are no umbrellas or palapas on the beach. The service is excellent in all cases. The food is average. Breakfast and lunch was o.k,, but dinners became a challenge after a few days. You can eat only once in the a la carte restaurants (2). After that, it's buffet, and they are mediocre at best. Be careful of the "all inclusive" charge - some people paid as little as $70.00 USD per person/per day, but we paid $100.00 per person/day. We're still "fighting it out" with the Sunset. Also, if you request "top name" alcohol, you'll get it. Location of the property is convenient to malls and clubs, etc. For a nice meal away from the Sunset, our favourite is La Dolce Vita. There are two locations of this restaurant and both are excellent.

“Great Get-Away”

Sunset Royal Cancun Resort

The only real down side of the entire week was the time-share "presentation" that was supposed to require 90 minutes of your time, with no obligation and no pressure (at least that is what the form you sign says). In reality, it was closer to 5 hours, with the last hour being very high pressure, and they wouldn't take "no" for an answer. At the end they take you to different people that simply present another angle with other numbers. It was a very unpleasant experience! However, once that was over, I was never bothered with it again, and had an absolutely wonderful time.
The facility is above average, with a nice pool, and absolutely beautiful beach and ocean. The food was abundant, as was the drink, and in all I would say also above average. The lobster dinner and Italian dinners were very good. The rooms could use a little updating, but the staff certainly kept them clean every day. And the view was great! The lagoon view has a balcony with two chairs, while the ocean view only has enough room to stand and look. The airconditioning never really cooled things down, but your in Cancun with a great view so you don't mind.
The best thing about Royal Sunset was the staff! They were all very friendly, and eager to accomodate. They all worked very hard, and I can't say enough about them.
Great place to bring a family.

“Not bad.”

Sunset Royal Cancun Resort

We stayed Feb 15th-22nd. We travel often and this was one of several travels to the area. We booked through an RCI exchange as usual and paid for the all-inclusive.
First, let me start by saying that we are NOT picky travelers.
We have done the all inclusive thing before and expect that the buffets will not be fine dining. At this location the buffet food was good, but I have had better and more variety. The reservation dinners were very good. I read in previous reviews that it would be recommended to book your dinner reservations as early as possibly, so I booked three different nights the day after we arrived. I had no problem getting my reservations and had my choice of dinner times. They have a seafood variety menu that is very good. We had the lobster dinner one of the nights and it was also very good. They do require long pants and shoes.
The first two dinners I noticed several people going in with nice dress shorts. The last dinner I showed up in nice shorts and top. The usher told me that I needed pants. I politely explained that each of the first two dinners (and tonight) I noticed others not wearing pants. He allowed me in with no further problems.
I would highly recommend the Mayan coffee. It is the best coffee we have had. The best part is the preparation by the waiter. I will not spoil it for you, but it includes flames and is very cool.

As usual in Mexico, the service was top notch. The restaurant staff, bar staff, maid service, room service, and everyone else were awesome. We tipped them well and they deserved it!
The only exception were one or two of the reception desk employees. They hardly smiled and were not at all receptive at times, especially when it came to exchanging money.

The rooms were nice and comfortable. They are not the best I have seen, but other than the coffee makers not working (we had two replaced), everything worked and was functional. Having a safe in the closet was a great plus. We also had a great view of the ocean. The balconies that face the ocean are very small. There is enough room for two, maybe three, people (not a very large person) to stand outside. You cannot fit a chair or anything else. The large balconies are on the opposite side of the resort and face the street and lagoon.

I walked along the beach in both directions. By far this resort has the best beach for atleast a couple of miles each direction. Some of the new luxurious hotels I walked past had no beach. This is a good choice if you are looking for a beach. The walking vendors are everywhere, but leave you alone after you tell them no.

I was a little disappointed in the nightly entertainment. "Milissa" is a singer on Friday nights who has dancers. The rest of the week the same dancers put on different themed dance shows that are about an hour or so long. With the exception of one of the male dancers who climbs high up off the stage and performs amazing stunts, the rest of the shows were very cheesy. They could definitely find much better night entertainment. After the shows get done at about 9 pm, there is no more entertainment. In the lobby bar 6 nights a week is a small band that plays live music. They are very good, but it is the same thing every night. This is not a place for fun, lively, night entertainment. The good thing is that you are within a short walking distance to the fun night spots of Cancun.

Overall, after having traveled to many resorts, I would have to say that this one is not bad. I have stayed at much better, but overall I had a good experience and would not hesitate to stay again.

Lastly, I do have one warning!! Unless you absolutely need to take the sales presentation to get the free tours, DO NOT do it.

We have taken several presentations before and this by far was the worst. We did it because the couple that came with us had never traveled out of country or done a sales presentation. We also were curious about the properties and wanted to take a better look around.
The first salesman was polite and explained that when all done, once we told him no, he would stop. He explained that the Mexican government has been tightning the ropes around them because of so many complaints.
At the end we all told him no and he persisted for only a bit, then sent us on our way. Here is where the problems started.
He took us to another person. We were told that the other person would ask us 5 short questions to rate our sales presentation experience. The second person told us that he is not with marketing (sales) and is only getting information about how we felt the sales presentation went. Well, it is a LIE.
They found a way to get around the new government regulations by calling the second person by another title other than a marketing person. He tried very hard to sell to us even after I told him numerous times that I was done listening to him. I called him on their lies about him not being part of marketing and tried walking away several times, although I could not because others stayed seated. I also told him several times that the more he talked to us the less I was interested and he would just ignore me and continue to talk to the rest of my party. He just would not give up. Finally, everyone got up to leave. I sent my wife with him to pick up the vouchers because I could not stand to look at him anymore. He then tried one last time to sell by telling my wife how beautiful she is. Unbelievable!! Our 1 1/2 hour presentation turned into almost four hours. As I said in the beginning, we are not picky travelers, but this was the worst.

“Fun and low key”

Sunset Royal Cancun Resort

Feb 13, 2008

My wife and I (26 and 28 respectively) just returned from our trip to Cancun where we stayed at the Royal Sunset for 4 nights in a studio time share unit. Although it wasn’t luxurious, it was very comfortable and had every amenity we needed. Because we booked through RCI, we had no choice but to take the All Inclusive plan for about $100 per person per night. At times, we were conflicted about whether the all inclusive was worth it, but in the end we were happy we did it. This was my second time in Cancun and I will begin by saying that it was a great trip over all.
The resort is located on the main strip, within walking distance to the flea markets (aggressive and annoying salesmen) and popular clubs. It is next to an upscale hotel called Le Blanc, and an empty lot on the other side where they are building a new resort (no noticeable noise).
Like most resorts in Cancun, the hotel is right on the beach with spectacular Caribbean blue waters. The waves were amazing and the resort did a very good job maintaining and cleaning the beach and had a life guard on watch. The swimming area was generally void of large boulders and rocks, making it a great swimming beach. Having gone on some long walks along the beach, I cannot say the same for all the resorts in Cancun. The negatives of the beach were that there were no umbrellas and waiters were scarce to take food and drink orders. The pool is smallish but it is well maintained and not overcrowded.
The unlimited drinks were really good, although they only had one choice of beer: Dos Equis. They had name brand alcohol, but you had to specify your preference otherwise they used well liquor. Even though the hotel was filled to capacity, we never had to wait long for drinks or food. Besides ordering drinks in the restaurants, during the day, the pool bar is the only open bar. Later, it moves to the lobby bar. It wasn’t a problem like I thought it would be. Also, I wouldn’t rely on regular waiter service at the beach, but definitely at the pool.
Our room was cleaned every day. It was not luxurious, but it was adequate. The AC temperature control worked well, we had cable TV with HBO and the news channels, our own balcony overlooking the ocean, and a small kitchen with a mini-fridge stocked with various drinks. The bed was comfortable and we slept well every night, listening to the sounds of the crashing waves.
The breakfast was our favorite meal. Lunch was ok, but dinner was hit or miss. The Atrium is the only non-buffet restaurant at the hotel, and the lobster dinner was quite good, if you can get a reservation. It is also closed on Saturday and Sunday nights. The buffet meals for lunch and dinner were more quantity vs. quality. Just make sure arrive at dinner towards the beginning because the best stuff gets eaten fast and may not be replenished. At breakfast, make sure to order cappuccinos. They were delicious!
The Royal Sunset has a sister hotel called the Sunset Lagoon. Don’t bother going there, it will only depress you. It is on the lagoon, instead of the ocean, and the food is worse. Enough said.
I would recommend the Royal Sunset if you are looking for a low key, inexpensive vacation with a great beach and friendly staff, who did not bother us once about the time share presentation. It’s not high end luxury, but it is comfortable and fun. See my pictures attached.
