We stayed at the Sunset Royal Hotel May 25-30, 2008 on an all inclusive package which included a commitment to attend a 90 minute timeshare presentation. Good value, but not a five star vacation. Hotel was nice; located right on the beach; hotel staff was very friendly.
Buffets: On a 1-10 scale with 10 being the best, the buffets averaged between 3-5. Every buffet each day was about the same, so they got old very quickly. Very little meat, mostly just fillers like bread and salads. Plenty of food but never felt satisfied.
Bars: Most of the liquor was of low quality, however each morning each of the bars start off with a limited quantity of the good brand name liquor, but these don’t last long.
Al a Carte Restaurants: The lobster night was a big disappointment. The lobster was rock lobster which tasted weird – kind of rubbery. For the Caribbean night, we had the Pirate Steak which was salmon. It was okay.
For the Italian night, we had one of the worst Italian dinners that we have ever had anywhere. The filet of beef was low quality and tasted as if it was filled with a filler. The lobster bisque was very, very salty. The pasta had no taste and had the appearance of plastic threads.
We strongly suggest you order the Mayan coffee at either of the al a carte restaurants after dinner. Even if you don’t like coffee, just sit back and enjoy the firey presentation – it’s very unique!
Time share presentation: Ours started at 8:00 am and we got done at 12:30 pm. Most everyone we talked to said they were there much longer than 90 minutes. 4-5 hours appeared to be the norm. Not a good deal for us. It just didn’t make sense. If you are interested, listen to all the deals they offer as they keep changing and the price drops considerably. At what you think is the end of the presentation, you get sent to another person who supposedly wants you to evaluate the presentation, but it turns out it just another sales presentation where the price drops considerably more and the deal changes again. We talked to other guests who owned timeshare (or fractional ownership as they call it today!) and they said that if you purchase the deal with a really cheap price, that is reflected in your contract number and you’ll never get to stay where you want when you want, as those who paid more money always get the preference of the good locations and good dates.
Helpful advice:
The day cruise to Isla de Mujeres was a lot of fun. The pontoon boat was very large and it was a big party from the time we pulled out of dock at 10 am until we returned at around 5 pm. Have the option to snorkel (equipment provided).
The Spa was okay.
The 30 minute sunset cruise that was offered as part of our all inclusive was a big disappointment. It was aboard one of the Sunset’s yacht, but occurred before sunset and was very short and uneventful. I would skip this next time unless you just want to cruise on a yacht for a short time.
For a change of pace, visit the Sunset Lagoon hotel for a change of pace. It’s a quieter atmosphere, the pool has a swim up bar (unlike Sunset Royal) with a slide.
We suggest shopping at Market #28 for deals. Take the local bus ride there (6 pesos per person, but if you don’t have pesos and pay with US$1, most drivers will keep the change). It’s about a 20-25 minute bus ride and when you get off the bus you need to walk about 4 block to the Market. Bargain hard. 50-75% from the starting price. It’s a very large market with many stands. They take US dollars or pesos; some stands take Visa or Mastercard, but it’ll cost you more to cover their banking charge for the exchange rate.
