“Overall positive experience”

This was my first trip to Cancun, and my first all-inclusive experience. Myself and two of my girlfriends (all in our mid 20's) spent three days at the GR Solaris in April. The hotel is beautiful and it's in a great location. Right on the beach, two nice pools, a swim-up bar. An important note: in order to get a beach chair by one of the pools, you have to put a towel out by about 7:30am. This is what we did the first day there, but the second and third day we decided to spend the day at the beach. This was great! You can get to the beach at whatever time of day you want to and there is always room. The lifeguards put up big beach umbrellas, you're right on the ocean, it's a one minute walk up the stairs to get cocktails and food (also a waitress comes around to take drink orders.) The beach is great! The beach is also more independent then the pool areas. In other words, at the pool areas there is always music playing and the entertainment staff are constantly doing activities where they try to include the guests (i.e. water aerobics, water volleyball etc...). At the beach, you do your own thing.
What I didn't like about the resort was the food: You have about six different restaurants to choose from and the food was terrible at all the restaurants. Yuck! Don't go for the food.
There were a lot of families. So if you are single and in your 20's, don't expect a party atmosphere. I had no problem with all the kids, but just know that there's not a huge night scene. You can do night excursions to different clubs in the area, but it costs extra and if you've been drinking most of the day, you're probably going to be too tired. However, as three "taken ladies" we didn't mind the lack of night activities because we were getting away to see each other, catch up, and relax on the beach. And this is exactly what we did.
Finally, if you're just planning on staying at the hotel, three days is plenty of time. Plenty! Three days of laying on the beach, drinking and spending time with my girlfriends was perfect. I think if I had spent much more time there, I would have started to get bored.
Overall, great experience: clean, big room with private balcony, facing the ocean. Gorgeous! But don't go for the food. It was awful!!!

We were at the GR Solaris from April 1-8 2008. We had a great time the resort was very clean and welcoming. We had two children 5 and 8 with us and they had a great time as well. The 8 yo loved the kids club. Beaches were nice and sandy compared to others with large rocks. Very nice pools and room, food like the rest of comments was soso...good breakfest though. Overall would recommed to all families.

“nice hotel, but not 4 star food”

GR Solaris Cancun

We just got back from the GR Solaris on Friday night. The hotel was very nice and clean. The rooms were big and roomy. Loved the large walk in tile shower. The beds were hard, but still comfortable. We did not see any entertainment at night, so cannot comment on that.
The downside:
the non carpeted hallways made it so that you can really hear people talking when they walked by.
the food was plentiful, but NOT high quality by any means. Some items were very good, others not.
did not like the fact that reservations were required for the nice restaurant and pants required. One of our party had to go and buy pants so that he could go in there.
as long as you call your alcohol, the drinks were good, otherwise they use cheap liquor in the drinks.
the beach was small and the ocean very rough
the lounge chair issue out by the pool was ridiculous. I had to go down at 7:45 am to put towels on our chairs to reserve them. then I came back 20 mins later and someone had put their PERSONAL ITEMS on our chairs. I was shocked.
then they came up with a rule that no chairs can be "reserved"xat the adult only pool.
the bathroom floor by the pool bar was so slippery and not cleaned up on a regular basis.

I would not stay at this hotel again, but I like variety and would probably go for a more UPSCALE hotel. We are all adults over 50 and did not have children with us. For the price, this was a GOOD place to stay.

“Gran Solaris Cancun stay”

GR Solaris Cancun

Apr 13, 2008

We stayed here april 3rd thru the 10th. Overall we had a very enjoyable time. The service, food, and staff were pretty good. There were also a couple of negative issues which I'll address below.

Several of the negatives, I'm sure, can be blamed on the timing of our trip. The palce was packed to the roof with high school age and younger kids. It was kind of like being trapped in a week long school recess. Of course with all those kids, this meant that the pools were always crowded and it was tough to get a decent lounge chair. The most annoying thing was the rooms, though in every other way they were very nice, they seemed to have been built with absolutely no soundproofing. You could hear almost everything being said in the adjoining rooms, even when the people were speaking in normal tones. Which kind of made you feel like you had to whisper or turn the TV on, just to keep the neighbors from overhearing your own conversations. Worse yet was that the noise from the hallways could get extremely loud at times. So, If you're a light sleeper, expect to be awakened several times a night.

The timeshare folks were a little persistent at first, but be firm with them and they eventually get the message. We did talk to one couple who listened to the pitch. They said the price started at $40k and dropped to around $28k during the next hour and a half of haggling. So if you don't want to spend that much money for a timeshare. Do yourself a favor and don't waste your vacation time listening to them, tell them no right away.

Although it is older, I do like their their other property the "Royal Solaris" a better.

“Loved the GR Solaris -- very relaxing”

GR Solaris Cancun

Apr 8, 2008
5/6 found this review helpful

First off -- We had a WONDERFUL time here. We were on our honeymoon and everything was as nice and romantic as we expected. I would definitely recommend this hotel to others.

Now to the detailed (Long) review:

You've probably already read a lot of the reviews on here and there are plenty of things to read, both good and bad. From my experience, you have to ignore the negativity and focus on the positives. No place is perfect, and this place certainly isn't, but for the price and the experience it's great. I'll break down the rest of my review into smaller sections. NOTE: We booked our trip through Orbitz and had pretty good luck with that. Orbitz has a person at the hotel to help you with any needs you may have.

Airport to hotel:

Getting through customs took awhile but nothing really surprising there. Once we goot through customs and headed out the door we were immediately "attacked" by friendly guys in matching tropical shirts. Be warned: They ARE trying to sell you something and lead you astray. Ignore them. If you use GreyLine, find the greyline rep and follow their instructions. All you have to do is take your voucher out the door and find the grey line rep outside and he will direct you to a van for transport to the hotel.

Arriving at the hotel:

Once you arrive the bellman will take your bags and have them delivered to your room. It's ok... and give them a tip when they deliver your bags. You will be brought to a desk in the lobby where one of their customer service guys will walk you through a map of the hotel and explain all the procedures for dining, lounging, and playing. They will also ask if you want a presentation about a "frequent-visitor's" program -- this is their concept of a timeshare, even though they will deny it if you ask them that. If you decide to go on the presentation it will cost you 1.5 hrs of your vacation and you'll probably get a t-shirt or something out of it. We opted not to participate so I can't tell you what exactly they present.

Staying at the hotel:

People tended to get out between 10-12, and definitely by noon things were hopping. I went out a couple of the mornings to reserve a seat by the pool but even when we didn't we were able to find places to sit. If you have a specific spot to lounge in mind, then go down early and put your towel on it. Otherwise you'll *probably* be able to find a spot.

The food was alright and was very accessible. They have three restaurants, plus a deli and room service. The Marco Polo, their premier restaurant, is fantastic and I would definitely recommend you eat there at least once. There's a dress code for men, just pants and shoes, no shorts or sandals. We ate a lot of room service towards the end because they cook it right up for you and it tastes better than the buffet.

Activities:

We booked through orbitz and we had the option of purchasing our excursions through the website. My recommendation would be to NOT buy them online. Wait until you get there and buy them from the booth at the hotel, by the pool. They will arrange transportation and everything is it's much more convenient -- the pricing didn't seem to be that different either.

We took a bus to downtown Cancun (Market 28) and that was quite the experience. Be sure to bring EXACT change, in pesos, or be prepared to get ripped off. They have no problem ripping you off right before your eyes.

Overall:

We had a great time. The hotel was clean, the staff was very nice and the amenities at the hotel were great. I would even venture to say that they had the nicest beach around and they also staffed a lifeguard. Lots of in-hotel activities every night -- if you don't have a good time, you can only blame yourself.
