We just finished a very enjoyable week at Club Regina Cancun. For the sake of full disclosure we are Raintree Vacation Owners and have been traveling to this place since 1995.
As I often do before traveling, I spent some time looking at tripadvisor.com and was surprised to see some of the negative comments. However, we had not traveled to Cancun since 2004 so I figured time and Wilma had something to do with it. From that perspective we were pleasantly surprised to find the place pretty much up to its old standards, which in our opinion were high.
So let me get the bad stuff out first. The rooms are clean and comfortable but they are outdated and clearly need to be revamped. The good news is that is precisely what is happening now. We asked to see the model unit (not quite finished yet) but we liked it. New furniture, new appliances and a new look. We were told all the units will be upgraded by the beginning of 2009 with some of the units coming online earlier.
The rest of the hotel looks very good. The lobby was redone and now includes a bar. My wife didn't like the Far East theme but I liked it. The pools looked great and the beach is in perfect condition. Someone in another review complained that the beach was not open. We were told they spent a lot of money to bring the beach back after Wilma. It seems the investment paid off. The new restaurant by the pool is OK. My wife and I are from Mexico and enjoy authentic food. For our taste the restaurant food was too "Americanized." No big deal.
Prices are high but that is the case everywhere in Cancun. It seems even the Peso has been gaining on the dollar. This is definitely not the bargain we saw a few years back.
The service in the hotel is outstanding. We have visited numerous timeshares in the US and nothing comes close to the level of service we get in Mexico. The only complain we have, and that has been documented in other reviews, is the check-in time. It is 4 PM and they mean it. On the other hand we were given access to the pool, towels and a place to change. We did not "suffer" that much while waiting for our room to be ready.
Lastly I want to clarify the connection to Westin, or rather the lack of it. At some point Westin and Club Regina were operated by the same company but that is not the case now. What it is important to notice is that Club Regina members can use most of the facilities of the Westin Hotel including their state of the art gym. We also got a 20% discount on their restaurants.
Other characteristics of the Club have been already mentioned. It is one of the first hotels in the southern tip of the Island and therefore it is far from almost everything. With "far" in this case being a relative term as the ride to downtown on the public bus (65 cents/ride) is about 35 minutes. It is also a quiet hotel that does not seem to have too much of a party scene. In fact they promote the "no spring breakers here" image. It suits our family taste but I can see the place being boring for others.
