We recently returned from our 1 week stay at the Great Parnassus resort in Cancun Mexico.
We checked in to the hotel where they issued us 5 towel cards, and 2 room keys, and our TV remote control. They ran out of keys and locks for the in-room safe. They promised to send the safe lock and key to our room on the very next morning.
We started our stay in room 206. The room is close to their lobby and essentially two floors up from the indoor promenade. Like all the rest of the even numbered rooms, this room is next to the Hilton. Having checked into the room, we provided our room number to the bellmen and they quickly got our luggage to our room.
We checked in early enough to get to check out the kid pools in the front of the resort, and signed our kids into their kid's club - so that we could use the facilities.
We continued to explore the resort finding their spa area which includes a work out area as well.
To get to the spa, you walk on a glass walkway that is above a stagnant water 'pond' that looks very nice. While I was there, I witnessed several children touching the water and getting the walkway wet - so we were mindful to pay attention so that we didn't slip into the pond. The water had blocks of film floating on top. I'm not sure what those were, but I made sure my kids didn't touch any of the water.
Next we walked through the promenade where the shops, restaurants and buffet are found. The 2 sides of the promenade are separated by a water feature with walkways. The water feature is illuminated by blue rope lighting. Along the water feature you will find several park benches where you can rest.
By late night, we went into our very modern room and tried to go to sleep. The noise from the Hilton's Air Conditioning system was impossible to sleep through. I thought it was raining hard, instead it was their air conditioning. Coupled with that, we got to hear high pitch noises from the lobby and promenade in our room.
The interior of the promenade is primarily marble looking. I am not an expert on the materials they used, however I can tell you that much of the exposed interior of the hotel is made up of metals, glass, ceramics, and marble. The reason I know this is because pretty much any noise that originates in the promenade emanates throughout the entire hotel. There are no materials to absorb noise. This creates a problem when trying to sleep at 11:30 P.M. or even passed midnight. Every noise from the lobby shoots straight up into your room.
After having asked the front desk representative (that was very rude and unwilling to help), we ended up asking the manager named Frederico to help us find another room. He promised us a new room on our third day.
As promised, on our third day, we were given keys to our new room. I reminded them that I hadn't been issued a lock and key to my safe yet, so I got my key and lock on the third day at the resort. Positives for our new room: it was 2 floors higher, and away from the Air Conditioners at the Hilton.
The interior materials of the hotel still hit this room with the high frequency noises to keep you up late at night. We had to turn on the TV to drown out the noise in order to fall asleep. Because of this flaw in their hotel design, I recommend for anyone planning to stay here - bring some ear plugs if you want to have a restful night of sleep.
Towards the end of our vacation, my wife had a new shirt on and had sat on the promenade benches while waiting to meet up with some other people that were staying at the hotel. When she got up, I noticed that there was black on the back of her shirt. We quickly identified that the black paint came from the bench, and alerted their manager Frederico about the situation. We showed them the bench, and they acknowledged that the pattern on my wife's shirt matched the bench, and the paint that was still there. (Please note - not one of the benches had a sign on it stating they had wet paint on them, and this occurred mid-afternoon). Frederico handed off the situation to Gilberto whom insisted that we have their services clean the shirt before they consider offering us what we paid for it. We gave them a shot at cleaning the shirt, and went back to our room. This time, with my video camera with me, we checked the bench to see if they cleaned the bench off. No - the paint was still there, for others to ruin their garments with. We brought it to managements attention once again, and I let them know that I videotaped myself wiping this paint off the bench. That very night, my daughter sat somewhere else and had black paint on her arm. At that point, we just had to make a joke out of the situation. What else could we do?
The shirt came back much cleaner, but still had black paint on it. We asked for a refund to our shirt, and they told us to talk to our travel agent for a refund, that they have done all that they could do.
We found that their floors in the promenade were very slippery, and would have wet spots from drink spills, leaks from their lobby roof, etc. We've witnessed our children slipping and falling, to other children slipping and falling as well. Their lighting design which looks nice seems to have had issues as well. The lighting along the water feature seems to have had electrical issues as evidenced by the soot shown in the pictures I've attached to this review. This must have occurred a coupld of times (at least). In addition, in the kid's pool area, we found exposed electrical boxes, and broken light boxes that a child in that area easily have their arm fall into. In their crepe stand I found that their microwave wiring had been spliced together with other wires in a twisted mess that was just asking for trouble. At the outside of the Big Ben's restaurant, I found that the original cool to the touch LED lighting had been at the base of the Big Ben clock feature in the hotel, had been replaced by a HOT halogen flood light - easily touched by a child would result in an unpleasant burn.
It was this general lack of upkeep, poor design and disregard for people's safety that I found to be most disturbing. Couple that with the lack of hospitality exhibited by their lobby staff, and you have the 1 star rating I have provided.
We did enjoy the ocean and main resort pools with our family for the entire time there. The food was great, but like other reviewers have stated, you might want to bring along a larger cup for your drinks. Beit alcohol or soft drinks, their cups are small. Big Ben's seemed to be the spot that required you to be there early if you wanted to enjoy a steak. If you showed up a 15 minutes after they open, you were out of luck in getting seated for atleast 45 minutes. The longer you waited, the more you'd get pushed out to 9-10 o'clock for dinner.
