“Beautiful Resort!”

The Royal Cancun

May 18, 2008

My fiance and I stayed at the Royal for 5 fabulous nights in a royal corner suite. We checked in online 48 hours before we arrived. We had no problems when we arrived and we got the room we were assigned.
Like most of you I haunted Trip Advisor for a month before we left, looking at pictures and reading reviews. Let me tell you that as beautiful as the pictures are, they don't even do it justice. When we arrived in our suite, it was decorated with towel art, rose petals, champagne, and cake - I had seen a million photos of this -but when I walked in and saw my suite..no words can describe! The turquoise ocean view alone, much less the GEORGEOUS room. I was blown away! I just kept walking around and saying "oh my gosh oh my gosh!." (only down side to our suite was that it was on the 4th floor on the spa side which means that it is directly above the kid's pool area at the Flamingo resort next door - kid's screaming can mess with the ambience you get with the spa music and ocean sounds but we told ourselves that at least the kid sounds were happy kids having fun.)
The entire resort is simply beautiful - loved our suite-designated cabana! Great for an afternoon siesta (or to doze off a few pina coladas!)
The food was OK, but not consistant. It was almost like "faux" food. It looked like food, and was presented in such a pretty way, but then it had no flavor whatsoever. I had a really bad experience at Marie Maria the third night where my beef was literally just hunks of fat and gristle which I had to spit out. I think the best place to eat would have to be Pelicanos because it is right on the water. Asianas was OK - we had sushi which was good - not a lot of selection but the service was good. Breakfast at Spice or room service was great! I loved the churros with caramel! Omelettes were yummy. Coffee great. Try the mexican coffee at the coffee bar! They flame it and coat the rim of the glass with toasted sugar.
The drinks were OK but also inconsistant and very weak. You could always order extra shots to pour in them to jazz them up a bit, but the booze they use is pretty rough. You can ask for specific brand names but that is a crap shoot also. You can ask for a margarita and get a margarita, or you can ask for a margarita and get a weird blue drink which the bartender insists is a margarita. Aaaaah you let the small things go - you ARE in paradise after all!!!
The beach is getting bigger - when we were there they were working on it and they have made a lot progress. Please be careful in the ocean water though - that current is very strong, especially if you have a few drinks in you. Also, we wore water shoes just in case.
Overall: beautiful resort, good service!!
If you are heading to The Royal I am jealous of you!! I hope you have a great time!! ps, dont forget that you can use all of the facilites at the spa even if you are not getting a treatment. Check it out, it is fantastic!!!

The Royal cancun resort is a definate return spot for us. We stayed in a Royal Corner Suite (541) for 11 nights begining 5/1/08. The weather was fantastic, only raining for 10 minutes the whole time we were there.

I travel alot for work all over the world and this was my wife's first international trip. I did a lot of research before booking The Royal in Cancun as I wanted something special for my wife and I to celebrate 30 wonderful years together (we are 47 - 51 years of age). I read many reviews about this resort, most were positive and some were negative. I must say that we have nothing at all to complain about. Oh ya, there was this one time when they didn't do the turn down service. Outside of that....the resort was beautiful, the staff was friendly, the service was excellent, the food was awsome, and we left feeling quite content without gaining one pound. That was a plus as far as we were concerned, but it was quite possible to over indulge if that was our wish.

I can't say that everyone will experience this resort or any other resort the way we did, but I believe there are those that can never be pleased no matter what. If you want to find goodness, there is plenty of it at the Royal Cancun. If you want to find something to complain about, you will find it no matter where you go....so stay out of our resort.

“Service is exceptional”

The Royal Cancun

My husband and I stayed at the Royal from May 1st - May 10th. First I want to say the employees there are exceptional and probably some of the nicest employees that we have come across in our travels. We have absolutely no complaints about the service, but the hotel itself is overrated. It is a beautiful hotel and appearance wise is comparable to some of the best US hotels as far as cleanliness and decor.
We had no problems checking in. We had booked one of the bottom priced rooms, junior suite oceanview, so the online check in was unavailable to us. When we arrived at the hotel after 1 and 1/2 hours in immigration lines, we were ready to relax and start our vacation. Rooms are beautiful, the only thing is I don't think they have enough king beds, I had e-mailed the hotel ahead of time requesting a king bed, only to be told I would need to upgrade to be guaranteed a king bed. To us is wasn't worth the extra cost and of course we had 2 double beds in our room. For being an adult only resort and it seemed that 95% of the guests there were couples, I am not sure why most of the rooms do not have king beds anyway. The prices they gave us to upgrade was a bit much, so we took the basic room. The view was amazing, I would call it oceanfront and I couldn't imagine how some of the other rooms could beat the view.
Now to the towel game, yes they have limited each room to 2 towels - but you still cannot get a decent chair without getting up at 7am to claim it and going back to bed. I am not an early riser, especially on vacation so if we waited until we got up, had breakfast and was at the pool by 1030 - 11am, there were no chairs available. My husband got up every morning at 7am, to ensure we had a decent chair and then came back and went back to sleep. There are simply not enough chairs to accomodate the amount of rooms they have. To top it off, one day we saw a lady who had "claimed" 4 chairs, 2 in the shade and 2 in the sun for her and her husband (they had brought beach towels from home or bought some) only to be in the chairs for about 1 hour. We didn't even see her husband until around 3pm that day, so basically she had hogged 4 chairs for herself. I believe that is rude and inconsiderate, but that is just an example of the "towel game".
The minibar in your room, FYI - i am not sure if this takes place in the higher price suites but it occurs at the jr suite ov level, they will not replace the bottles. Now we were there for 9 days, my husband and I really only drink Bacardi & diet cokes (as far as mixed drinks go) we had went through the bottle about half way through our stay. We both like to have some cocktails in the evening while getting ready for dinner and such and the bottle wasn't even full to start. My husband called down and asked for another bottle to be replaced and he was told the bottles wouldn't be replaced, you were limited to one bottle of each. So you receive a bottle of smirnoff vodka, a bottle of bacardi, a cheap whisky and a cheap tequila. Now we didn't even touch the whisky and tequila, my husband did have some of the vodka, but I think that is ridiculous that if they are promoting a minibar in your room, they should be replacing it when it is empty.
Restaurants - Asiana's is tremendous. The food is great and the waiters and service there was excellent. The buffet is not what we would consider a buffet and the food, not so good. Pelicano's was pretty good, I did have a couple of dishes there I didn't like, but overall it was pretty good. The food from room service was pretty good, we usually ordered breakfast, although toward the end of the week - it was cold by the time it was getting to us. Didn't eat at Tapa's, not our kind of food. Maria Maria was ok, not anything I would rave about.
Bars - swimup bar was good and fast. Lobby bar, the bartenders were excellent, although the drinks a little on the weak side. If I order a bacardi and coke, I want to taste the bacardi I don't want to fill like i am drinking straight coke. My husband did try the mojitos toward the end of the trip and he was enjoying those, but you were never sure what you were going to get. Each time he ordered it, it was always a little different from the last.
The location is great. You are literally right across the street from Pat O'Briens and Margarataville. We went over several evenings while we were there, because the entertainment in the hotel is not so good. They have a live band that starts around 10pm every evening and it is the same band, same songs, each and every night. It is easy enough to get a bus into downtown if you want to hit the big clubs or you can go with the entertainment group from the hotel.
Overall, the trip was great and no huge problems with the hotel. But would I stay there again, probably not. I don't think it is worth the price. We have stayed at other all-inclusives in Cancun and the Caribbean and for the price it really doesn't compare.

Arrived @ 10:30am & was taken up to the 8th floor.(#829). Room not ready till 3:00. Gave us time to go eat @ Pelcanios. Ask for Ivan. GREAT. Room ready @ 3. PERFECT! Veiw & everything. Towel game is NOT THAT BAD. Service was wonderful everywhere. Beach is really good. No need to worry. Never made it to Chefs Plate. Heard it was just ok. Ate at Asiana twice. If you want to eat at the Hibasha tables you may have to wait. No need to worry. Go tell them the time & go have a drink. It works out just fine. I wouldn't change 1 thing about this resort. It is exceptional!!!! Romantic when needed, but fun too. And you meet the nicest people. Had a couples massage & no complaints there. If you have any questions, please email me. You are going to have a wonderful stay! Going back next May for sure!!!!!

We stayed at the Royal from May 7th through the 14th in a Royal Ocean View room. We have stayed at many high-end all inclusives and this resort really did exceed our expectations. There is really nothing I can say about this resort that has not already been said. The room, bed, food, staff, pool ~ all amazing. We loved the Royal from start to finish and would highly recommend this resort to anyone. We will be returning next year to the Royal but first we are going to check out Playa Del Carmen this summer.
