My family just returned from Cancun and we had the time of our lives. I have to be really honest - I booked all of our trips based on reviews that I read on Trip Advisor.

Of all the things we tried this was my least favorite. Let me share a few pros and cons before you book this trip.

Pros:

1. Pepe (the tour guide) is great. This tour is ranked #1 only because Pepe is the guide.
2. If you have small children, an anxious spouse or older family members with you this tour is great.
3.The zoo is great for kids
4. The Jeeps are new and safe.

Cons:
1. The tour is expensive for what it offers.
2. The ceynote is a hole in the ground and honestly the worst one I've visited. It has an actual swimming area of only 15' x 20' which, would be large enough but once you get in the ceynote with 2 or 3 other tour groups (30 - 60 people) it quickly loses its appeal.
4. The buffet on the beach is just some picnic tables with 3 or 4 items to chose from (fish tacos, chicken tacos, rice & beans or salsa & chips). The tables are covered in bird droppings and the two tables we tried to sit at had nails sticking out of them as well as ants all over the place.
5. The zip line is very, very, very, tame and attached to a jury rigged homemade tower.

Overall, my thoughts are this. This last trip to Cancun was the best one I've ever taken. With that said I've taken 4 jungle tours in Cancun and seen how much more there is to offer and other than Pepe's personality this isn't a must do. If you like extreme or even moderately extreme activities this is going to depress you. I had a 6, 8 and 10 year old with me so this fit the bill.

I could tell that the guys and the honeymooners were bored out of their minds. The kids and the old ladies loved Pepe and the Zoo.

Overall, I didn't think this tour was very professional. From losing our booking, to them telling us they had overbooked and could we go another day, to having to fill our own gas tanks, the minimal lunch, the shaky zip line tower etc. etc.

Hope that helps,
JD

“Perfect Day Trip”

The review about Joe's jeep by hangdog is extremely accurate, so I will only post a few details. Meeting up at Plaza La Isla was a breeze, our guide Pepe wore a green T-shirt with the jeep adventure logo and greeted each of us at 8:15AM in front of Starbucks.

The jeeps were like new and driving on the bumpy road in the jungle was fun. We drove a little slower than the rest of the jeeps, but Pepe waited at the bend for us to catch up. Note: It's a good idea to use the bathroom at the ruins before you get to the jungle for the zip line and cenote.

The El Rey ruins are small, but Pepe does a great job of explaining the history of the Mayans without being boring. We were able to climb the ruins and feed the iguanas (it's easier for the iguanas to eat the tortillas if you rip them into smaller pieces).

My husband is afraid of heights and he completed the zip line with no problems. There were two separate zip lines. We went on a slower one first and stopped to get on a shorter and faster one. Keep your knees up. The view was nice and the adrenaline rush was even better. Walking up the tower to get to the zip line was more scary than actually going down the line. The cenote was refreshing, especially after the zip line experience.

The fish at the buffet lunch on the beach was delicious and we did not get sick from the food. The lunch consisted of beans, rice, fish, soft taco shells, french fries, chicken, and beef. You have a choice of beer, pineapple juice, soda, or pina colada.

The zoo was another great highlight of the trip. Where else can you hold crocodiles and place a boa constrictor on your shoulders for photo ops? We paid a small amount of pesos for a bag of fruit to feed the deer, parrots, and monkeys. Only one bag needed for two people.

During the entire trip, we never felt rushed or pressured to do anything that we did not want to. We enjoyed Joe's Jeep Adventure from beginning to end and definitely got our money's worth.

We booked a tour with Joes Jeep Adventure on April 28th and had a blast!!!!!
Pepe was our guide and he was so much fun, we drove a brand new jeep that was so new it hadn't even had it's first oil change yet. I couldn't believe we saw and experienced so may things in one day and did not feel rushed at all.
This tour is a bargain and a "must do" if you are in Cancun!!!

“The best day of our vacation!”

We had a great visit to Cancun 4/12/08 - 4/19/08. I hadn't booked the jeep tour in advance since I wanted to see what the weather was like, but I did go online while we were at our resort and booked a couple of days ahead of time. I got a confirmation right away and we were all set!

The Jeep Adventure is awesome! You meet Pepe, your guide, at the Starbucks at La Isla Mall around 8:30 am. They put 4 people to a jeep - since we had 4 we had one to ourselves. Then you drive yourself on the tour caravan style.

The first stop is El Ray - a small Mayan ruin site in the hotel zone. It is pretty interesting, but Pepe brings tortillas to feed the iguanas as well. The iguanas are huge! And they know it is feeding time when you show up.

After that, it is a 20 minute drive or so to the jungle. You drive about a mile or two in true off road conditions - and Pepe leads the caravan going pretty fast so all the guys can show off their driving skills. My kids loved it - they thought we were on a roller coaster. You have the option of doing the zip line for $15 US per person. They had all new equipment and they really knew what they were doing. There was a 6 year old in our group who did it by herself! I am terrified of heights, but decided to try it. I am so glad I did.

Then, you walk 30 feet or so to a cenote (an underground swimming hole) which is fantastic. It is so refreshing and the natural beauty of these underground caves is just amazing. Pepe provides masks so you can look underwater.

Next, it is a short ride to a small village for a delicious private lunch on the beach. Seriously, this was our best lunch all week! Drinks are included - beer, soda, pina coladas - whatever.

Finally, you jump back in your jeep and head up the road to Crococun or something like that. It looks a little cheezy from the outside, but don't let that fool you. It is a jungle/zoo like you've never seen before. We got to hold baby crocodiles (2 months), young crocs (2 years), birds, feed spider monkeys, pose for a picture with a real live huge crocodile, feed deer, hold a fawn that looked just like bambi, hold snakes (not for me!) and more. It was incredible. Make sure you have tons of room left on your memory card for your camera!!!

Then you drive back to La Isla Mall to return your jeep. We got back around 4pm.

To say it was the highlight of our trip just doesn't do it justice. We ranged in age from 8 to 40 and we all loved it. Pepe is fantastic and truly enjoys running these tours. You will be missing out if you don't give this a try. And I say that having had the opportunity to try a lot of things - helicopter ride over the volcano in Hawaii, swimming with sting rays, etc. This certainly deserves its spot as #1 on TA!

Today we went on the widely praised "Joe's Jeep Adventure" and let me just say it was all the hype and more. We went with my whole family and it was fun for all. You drive brand new Jeep 4-doors and I mean "You" actually drive and they have nice AC in them. I would highly reccommend doing the zip line as well. Lastly, you need to make sure your tour guide is "Pepe" he make the whole trip!
