I just wanted to drop a quick something... and will elaborate later. My husband and I honeymooned at Cozumel Palace and were very scared before we arrived due to a few reviews. Let me start by saying... high maintenance! If you don't like this place... I don't know what you will like.
We arrived around 2:30 on a Tuesday (thank God) we were able to see the fire show last night, as all teh reviews say, it is the best. We were greeted with cinamon beverages and smiling faces. Although we were not greeted as honeymooners or given the correct bracelet (treatment is a little better when you have the honeymooner pink bracelet), we still have a fabulous time. We kept to ourselves the first day as there were MANY families around, kind of disappointing. For the size of the resort, we thought it woudl be a more intimate place, if you want a family vacation, go to Playacar, it's geared towards families more. We laid out and enjoyed the crazy staff and beverages. One Long Island and I about fell off of my chair, very strong drinks, NEVER watered down. We met quite a few fun people at the pool bar the next day with whom we spent a lot of time in the days following. HONEYMOONERS- take time to meet other people, it makes your visit so much more fun. Of course spending the first few days of married life soley with my wonderful husband was great, but you could definitely tell which couples had gone and met other people and those who stayed connected the entire week by their bored faces. Gaudencio was the best bartender, next to Luis, and Speedy Gonzales in the Lobby Bar.
We loved the food, great burgers, were told the grouper was amazing (i hate fish) and the Asian restaurant was fabulous. The sushi was pretty good quality, like what we find here north of Chicago. The beef teryaki was amazing. So... disregard any old reviews, they got a new menu the Sunday before we arrived and it is fabulous. We ate outside a lot, not realizing lunch was also available in the Mexican restaurant. They serve make your own pizza, mexican tacos and fajitas, pasta... very good food in there.
Be forewarned: the excursions book FAST. Coming on a Tuesday left us with one opening for our stay, we were able to go on the "glass bottom boat" on Friday evening. The glass is abotu 1 ft by 3 feet... not very impressive or what I thought it'd be... but it was free. The snorkeling guide was fun adn we purchased a picture of us in the water for $10. We went to Playa de Carmen just to get off the resort and had a fun time. It is pretty and we visited the Playacar Palace where you recieve all of the same treatment. It was much larger and we were able to go on the beach which was a fun twist as there is no beach at Cozumel.
We also went on the Tulum Xtreme excursion, loved it! Tulum was pretty, we didn't go on the beach but looked and have some of our best trip pictures there. The ruins were very crowded, but still beautiful. The zip lines were great, very professional, and high up! Our driver made me nervous... going about 80mph through the jungle, we all smacked our heads on the roof multiple times, but he had fun. We stopped to see a family of racoon things, very adorable. If you do this, know that the repelling is not real repelling. You climb a tower (80ft-ish) then repel down the "tower" into a small caveish thing. Nothing too exciting. Lunch was great (it is included) and we went snorkeling, the water was FREEZING, there were few fish, but it was very special to go in that water and the white rock is gorgeous. It took a very long time to drive there and we were exhausted by the end of the day. We are the last drop off, we made the 4pm ferry. PS- you MUST PAY for your ferry ride! $12 each way per person. Do no get a round trip ticket, the companies switch on and off every hour who leaves, if you purchase a ticket with the wrong company, you will wait 1 more hour.
Overall our honeymoon was fabulous. Room service came 2 times a day, our room was beautiful on the 1st floor next to the spa, however we did not have a hammock. Our friends said we didn't miss out... it is stiff but loose and very uncomfortable. We used the tub almost every day and watched a beautiful sunset every night. We shared a special dinner which was tasty, but I had gotten sick the day before. I got food poisoning one night from sour cream, puked 2 times then I was 100% better. My husband called room service for crackers at 1am and they brought a whole bowl full. Very accomodating, friendly people.
We needed mroe sunscreen and ventured across the street to the left a little into a large store that sells... well everything. matresses, cabinets, groceries, you name it.
We regret not staying for longer, our friends told us 6 days was enough, 7 would have been better. We did not have time to explore the island. Our friends rented a scooter, $30 a day down the street and explored all day. There is a great spot to snorkel at the national park, you can see the "real" Mexico, and the uninhabited side of the island with no electricity. Our friends said it was gorgeous, just beach and them. Jealous!!
Playing the the pool, watching the somewhat cheesy shows, playing in tournaments (ping pong, boccee, etc) was hilarious. We also enjoyed men versus women, with ridiculous games of which the women won of course. Casino night was a ball! As for the night life, we never left the resort. We just drank at the bar and went to bed fairly early. Being in the sun all day was draining. Some peopel we met went to Senor Frogs (left within 15 minutes due to the fear factor), Margaritaville was nice, but they loved Carlos and Charlies. All three bars are within a 10 minute walk, we walked into town quite a few times, very nice :)
I am sure that this resort is different every week, there are different people, but the staff is amazing. We enjoyed everything about our stay and can't wait to try another palace. Cozumel was intimate, fun, and beautiful. We only had one storm for about 2 hours and hung out with a great couple. Just enjoy yourselves, meet people, and don't be too high maintenance.
Ooo! And as for tips- we brought a couple hundred 1's to tip with. We noticed NO change in service if we tipped or not. We usually left $5 at the bar after a long day, but we truly tested it out. I was surprised, but you can tell how happy the people are to work there and they make you feel very welcome. The infinity pool was deceiving too, you'd think it'd go out into the ocean, but it just flows into the 2nd pool, oh well! If that's my worst complaint... I say it's great! So enjoy Cozumel!!! But know, there isn't tons for kids to do.
