“Great View!!”

Really Good:
The 3rd story balcony view alone was worth the price of the room! The view really makes it seem like a special vacation. Easy walk to town and to the local supermarket, close to Rockn Java. The staff was friendly and helpful. The cleaning staff did a great job with our room. For the first time in about 15 trips to Cozumel the shower had an unlimited supply of hot water. Cold AC. Small refrigerator, ceiling fan, cable tv. Your dive boat can pick you up right at the hotel dock.

Seems good on the website, but.......:
There is great shore access for snorkel and diving with a nice shallow area, steps and rails. I assume Dive Paradise will rent a tank. But there is usually floating debris on the surface which makes for icky snorkeling. The ocean's bottom covered with concrete debris and dangerous looking rebar in this area makes me nostalgic for lake diving, I guess the hurricane did some sandblasting here removing live ground cover. The night diving was best, we quickly found lobster and octopus right next to the dock.

Nice oceanside sandy lounging area and pool, it's public access, which is nice when it comes to the beautiful local girls who come to tan, but we did see a naked toddler peeing into the pool. As we didn't use the pool that was amusing. I liked the fact that the pool and lounging area had alot of activity. If you want peace and quiet go to Villas Las Anclas.

Can't really review the no-name-bar. Although the place put out a good vibe, we had a horrid round of margarita's the first night and never went back. (I know too many great inexpensive places to eat in walking distance and we had snacks and could make much better drinks in our room) The menu seemed pretty expensive by Cozumel standards, but the place seemed to do a brisk business and their customers always seemed to be having fun.

The Bad:
Ok, the worst thing is the rooms are very insecure. Any handyman could get into the room faster without a key faster than with one. No room safe. (Both not that uncommon in inexpensive Cozumel hotels) The staff told us that a first story room had been broken into. Next worse. Every day the 'new sheets' had gross permanent stains. When it rained, water from the balcony washed into the room, you had to shove a towel under to slow it down. Dive lockers are advertised somewhere, but they are only for Dive Paradise customers. No morning coffee. No room phones. No drinking water. The room is a bit on the small side. The toilet needed a little finesse for a good flush.

All added up:
I had such a good time that I hate to give the place only two stars. Next trip I'm likely to return. I'm now addicted to having a room with a view. But I sure wish they would fix some of the more glaring problems. I will definitely be bringing my own sheets.

I had not stayed at this hotel since my first trip to Cozumel 15 years ago. For the most part, it has not changed all that much. The rooms are adequate and clean, with small refridgerators, A/C and cable tv, but NO phones. The hotel is a short walk from town and great food, shopping. The best part is that you don't ever have to leave the hotel if you don't want to. There is a lovely pool with a swim up bar and restaurant (great food at decent prices), a sandy man-made beach, and fantastic snorkeling right off the back of the hotel. There is also an excellent car rental place called Less-Pay that is in the front of the hotel (check there site for discounts on cars-if you rent from them you also get free calls to the US.) I would most definently stay there again. Call or e-mail the hotel for discounted rates!

We just returned from a week in Cozumell. My wife and I have been to Cozumel 4 times and this last time was by far the best trip yet. The staff at the Barracuda Hotel was the best. The rooms are clean , the air is cold, and the view was great. The No Name Bar and restaurant was first class all the way. Great food and great service. My next stay will be at the Barracuda Hotel.

“We loved the Barracuda and will go back!!!!”

We had a wonderful stay at the "new" Barracuda Hotel. We were there for 2 weeks in February 2006 and couldn't have asked for nicer accommodations. Rooms are clean and spacious but not elaborate. Management was cordial & anxious to please. Lots of new amenities since Wilma - pool with swim up bar, excellent food from the "no-name bar", new dive lockers, etc., etc. Give it a try - I don't think you'll find a better beach front value. We will definitely be returning next year!!!

“Barracuda Back-a-ruda with Vengeance”

Barracuda

Feb 18, 2006

Anyone concerned with the Reuters report of the complete destruction of the Barracuda Hotel during Hurricane Wilma should be pleased to know that it is back with a vengeance. The infamous Pepto-Bismol pink hotel appears to have returned in full capacity, now sporting a bright burnt orange coat with more commercial offerings than ever. Better or worse, you be the judge. All the rooms appear to be restored to a better than previous condition and the sandy area in front of the famed diver/snorkeler protected water entry-way now hosts a very impressive pool, complete with both a sit-down and swim-up bar. The hammock area has been partitioned off and leased to a company that conducts the helmet-style shore diving, the Dive Paradise dive shop at the end of the seawall has moved into the prior rooms 104 & 105 and the restaurant is gone.

Over the past years, this peaceful and quiet beach setting has continued to be threatened by the surrounding and expanding cruise ship trade. Prior to Wilma, all but a few of the lower floor rooms had been walled up on the beach-side, re-opened to the sidewalk and leased to street-side vendors, including a (cruise ship) “Crew Internet Café” which previously provided access to the hotel’s beach for its customers. Post Wilma, the passage from the Internet establishment to the hotel’s beach has been blocked (not sure if permanent) and re-routed via the new “No Name Café” storefront, accessible via the new small restaurant’s corridor which ends with seating by the new beach bar. During our last visit, now high season and only 3 months post-Wilma, the new “No Name Café” seems to be doing an impressive business, although personally the sacrifice for tranquility with losing some of the hotel’s beach access to the public seemed slightly easier to take when offset by the occasional glimpse of a beach side thong from past Internet shop customers; however, even this was missing on our recent visit but maybe due to the cooler weather :-).

Previous customers of this hotel who enjoyed this hotel’s nearby access to the central city, San Miguel, the nearness of the sea and easy entry into the ocean for diving and snorkeling will be happy to know that little has changed in this area, with the exception that the underwater sea wall wave-break is still in the re-construction phase. However those who enjoyed the hotel as somewhat of a sanctuary in the ever expanding madness of cruise-ship and high-rise condo mania may find that it has lost a little of its charm. Late risers will likely now be happier on the south side of the hotel near the bar that closes at midnight, early risers near the north side where divers now “congregate” at the inside-hotel dive shop beginning at 7AM, and others somewhere in the middle (while running the AC to keep out the noise). With the conversion of the old Plaza Las Glorias down the street to time-share and condo la-la land, this leaves this hotel as the only one practically close to the city, near the water and on the south side of town with a pool, although on a much smaller and less glittery scale than the old PLG.
