“Very Nice Resort, BUT.........Timeshares, Timeshares, Timeshares”

Park Royal Cozumel

Jul 13, 2008

My wife and I stayed at the Park Royal Cozumel in July 2008 for 6 days and 5 nights. The location of the resort and the way that it is set up is outstanding. We very much enjoyed the pools and bars overlooking the ocean daily. We also enjoyed the cold water jacuzzi tubs right above the ocean. The snorkeling, scuba diving, and water activities at Park Royal are some of the best we have experienced in Cozumel.

That being said, we were disappointed in the quality of the food, the fact that we were given two beds that were smaller than a full-size, and the hospitality of some staff members. My wife and I are both over six foot tall and we were both longer than our beds. We asked for a king bed, and as many other before us, were told that none were available.

My main and biggest disappointment with this resort was that their main focus is selling timeshares to the guests. Every where you walk, one of the staff members is trying to get you to take a tour and to listen to their presentation. They are more than happy to offer you a free car for the day, if you will give them 75-90 minutes about their timeshares. Once we said no over and over, then some of them actually became condescending and sarcastic. We go on vacation to relax and get away from the day to day, not to be constantly barraded about a timeshare.

Overall, it is a nice resort and with the help of some much needed managerial changes, it would be one of the better places in Cozumel to stay for a family trip or a romantic getaway. But for now, you better love to hear about timeshares or have a great set of earplus. We wont be going back here for a long time.

    • Liked — The infiniti pools, cold water jaccuzi, and bars overlooking the ocean. The Diving and Snorkeling are amazing.
    • Disliked — I definitely was most dissapointed in the constant pushing of timeshares to the guests

we stayed at park royal on 4th July weekend when we arrived the wait was not long to get checked in that was the only good thing there were time share people everywhere you went that were always wanting to talk to you from the time you arrive at the hotel till you leave they are all over the hotel..The food was terrible we found hair in te food on different days and the last day the vegetables had worms in it when I bought it up to the staff they looked at it but still left the food out they never removed the food nobody apolgized for it. also if your check out is at 12 you need to leave at 12 the doors will lock with all your luggage in it even if your packed and ready to go they will charge you 40 dollars to open the door. I will never stay here again. I looked at the reviews prior to me going and this was not good as far as liquir no top shelf liquor here and beer is on draft only dosequis at that.

“The good, the bad, and the ugly”

Park Royal Cozumel

3 of 5 stars

Just returned from Park Royal from a stay July 2-6. Had been reading reviews on here for months so we were interested to find out for ourselves.

We arrived at 12:30 and there was no wait to check in. I requested a king size bed and they lied to me and said there were "like 2 in the whole resort." Which, of course, isn't true. That irritated me a little--I think I would have rather him say, "Those are only for time share owners" or "You didn't pay enough." Whatever, just don't lie to me about it. But I was prepared for that, so I let it go pretty easily.

We ate breakfast there every morning and all lunches but one. I would give the buffets a B. It was very good, for an all inclusive and there was a ton of variety. I really find it hard to believe that everyone couldn't find something they liked. We weren't there for a whole week though, maybe I would have gotten tired of it after a while.

The room and grounds were immaculate. The main pool looked fairly clean, but one of the two beach side pools was closed for cleaning a couple of days, and the other one was revoltingly nasty, clumps of hair and food floating around in it.

We ate in the Caribbean and Italian restaurants. The appetizers, soups, and desserts were only slightly above average in the Caribbean, but the entrees were great. I enjoyed my entree at the Italian place, but my husband wasn't crazy about his. Again though, for all inclusive food, it was fine. We did not eat at the buffet at night.

The waiters, bartenders, maids, etc were all super friendly and eager to do their jobs. We used the gym twice and it's fine, nothing to write home about.

The snorkeling right out front is awesome. We also took a snorkel trip and it was a waste of money--we saw much better stuff right out front. We did as someone else suggested and let the current pull us north. There was a bar about an 1/8 of a mile up the road with steps to the water and we got out and walked back. It's a little awkward walking down the street in a bikini, but, oh well.

That's the good and the bad, now for the ugly. Take heed of the warning about your valuables. My iPhone was stolen off the beach the first day we were there out of my beach bag. It was the only thing of value in there. The staff was concerned, but in the end, it was my fault for leaving it unattended. We used a safe in the room for $2 extra a day, but it was a pain in the rear. we think the batteries may have been going dead because it didn't seem to matter what number we pushed, it would put whatever number it felt like on the screen. Needless to say, after my phone was stolen, we were much more cautious about our valuables.

Second ugly point, bedbugs. I am 99% certain that we had bedbugs. Now let me say, this is no indication of the cleanliness of the place and, when I was in Cozumel 3 years ago at what I consider the best hotel on the island (the Presidente), I was bitten by them also. But I did research then and when I returned this time, and I am convinced. I did put it in my survey as we checked out, so hopefully they will take measures to get rid of them (something that is very difficult to do).

Reading over this, it sounds much more negative than I mean it to. Overall, we had a great trip, and if I can say that after having my phone stolen and getting eaten alive by bedbugs, the place must have it's good points.

Finally, we would go back for a family trip with our children, but if it's going to be just my husband and I, we'd probably try to go somewhere just a little nicer. I think if you set your expectations on 3 stars, you'll be happy there.

“Park Royal- so so hotel, beautiful grounds”

Park Royal Cozumel

We just returned from our trip to Cozumel. This resort is beautiful and well kept. All of the staff were very friendly.

Dont expect a king size bed, even if you request one. The views from one of the towers are not very good. We had a room on the 3rd floor and basically it overlooked the kids club area. We were celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary and couldnt even sleep in the same bed.

We finally got to change rooms over halfway in to our 5 night stay. We got a room on the 9th floor in the middle building, with a king bed. This was a completely different place. View was awesome, bedding was great. Just wished we could have had that all along. We were told that they only have 10 rooms with king size beds, i really doubt that.

“Hated it wil never go back!”

Park Royal Cozumel

The staff was very rude and did not have a smile on their face. We waited in line for 45 minutes before we got upto someone to check us in. The man that was supposed to check us in was talking to other employees nonstop in spanish. Then he looked up at me and didn't even welcome me. I gave him my last name and confirmation number and he said he didn't have anything. I showed him my confirmation and he still said he didnt have anything. He finally went in the back and said they found my reservation in expedia and it will take time to update. Then he open up his drawer and took out all the cash and counted it several times without saying anything to us. After about 15 minutes he said okay I found your resevation but we do not have a room because you didnt have a reservation. I was so upset and asked how long it will take for a room? He said that check in is not until 3:00pm and right now its 2:49pm. I asked to speak to the manager. Finally after waiting another ten minutes the manager said that check in is not until 4:00pm. I was really upset and said that I thought it was 3 and he said yeah but we do not have a room ready. We hung around after a long flight and finally got a room at 4:30 that smelled very bad. It was hot and humid and our A/C didnt work. We called the front desk several times and they sent a engineer that came twice but couldnt really fix it. They said they would change our rooms the next day. My husband was sitting on the bed and sweat was rolling down his face and I had several mosquito bites all over my arms there were fire ants in the balcony and on the dresser. After waiting around all night we finally received a call at midnight asking if our A/C was working I said it wasn't and wanted to change rooms. They sent up another technician and finally changed rooms at 1:00am. We had a terrible experience here. We were only there for the 4th of July weekend and our trip was not relaxing as it shouldve been. The customer service was terrible and noone spoke hardly any English. The food at the buffet was cold and nasty desserts were good. They did not have room service and you were not allowed to take food up in your room. Would never recommend this to anyone.
