Just returned from Park Royal from a stay July 2-6. Had been reading reviews on here for months so we were interested to find out for ourselves.
We arrived at 12:30 and there was no wait to check in. I requested a king size bed and they lied to me and said there were "like 2 in the whole resort." Which, of course, isn't true. That irritated me a little--I think I would have rather him say, "Those are only for time share owners" or "You didn't pay enough." Whatever, just don't lie to me about it. But I was prepared for that, so I let it go pretty easily.
We ate breakfast there every morning and all lunches but one. I would give the buffets a B. It was very good, for an all inclusive and there was a ton of variety. I really find it hard to believe that everyone couldn't find something they liked. We weren't there for a whole week though, maybe I would have gotten tired of it after a while.
The room and grounds were immaculate. The main pool looked fairly clean, but one of the two beach side pools was closed for cleaning a couple of days, and the other one was revoltingly nasty, clumps of hair and food floating around in it.
We ate in the Caribbean and Italian restaurants. The appetizers, soups, and desserts were only slightly above average in the Caribbean, but the entrees were great. I enjoyed my entree at the Italian place, but my husband wasn't crazy about his. Again though, for all inclusive food, it was fine. We did not eat at the buffet at night.
The waiters, bartenders, maids, etc were all super friendly and eager to do their jobs. We used the gym twice and it's fine, nothing to write home about.
The snorkeling right out front is awesome. We also took a snorkel trip and it was a waste of money--we saw much better stuff right out front. We did as someone else suggested and let the current pull us north. There was a bar about an 1/8 of a mile up the road with steps to the water and we got out and walked back. It's a little awkward walking down the street in a bikini, but, oh well.
That's the good and the bad, now for the ugly. Take heed of the warning about your valuables. My iPhone was stolen off the beach the first day we were there out of my beach bag. It was the only thing of value in there. The staff was concerned, but in the end, it was my fault for leaving it unattended. We used a safe in the room for $2 extra a day, but it was a pain in the rear. we think the batteries may have been going dead because it didn't seem to matter what number we pushed, it would put whatever number it felt like on the screen. Needless to say, after my phone was stolen, we were much more cautious about our valuables.
Second ugly point, bedbugs. I am 99% certain that we had bedbugs. Now let me say, this is no indication of the cleanliness of the place and, when I was in Cozumel 3 years ago at what I consider the best hotel on the island (the Presidente), I was bitten by them also. But I did research then and when I returned this time, and I am convinced. I did put it in my survey as we checked out, so hopefully they will take measures to get rid of them (something that is very difficult to do).
Reading over this, it sounds much more negative than I mean it to. Overall, we had a great trip, and if I can say that after having my phone stolen and getting eaten alive by bedbugs, the place must have it's good points.
Finally, we would go back for a family trip with our children, but if it's going to be just my husband and I, we'd probably try to go somewhere just a little nicer. I think if you set your expectations on 3 stars, you'll be happy there.
