“The Best Place on Cozumel Island............”

Ventanas al Mar

venatanas al mar is the best kept secret on the island.........wait till you see the beach...........my wife and i would get up every morning to a wonderful breakfast hop in our jeep drive to the other side for diving (25 minutes of the most beautiful coastline in the world) return about noon and hang out on the beach the rest of the day..........coconuts next door has fantastic margaritas and food..........turtle season is magical on full moon.....we witnessed several lumbering up from the ocean to lay eggs.........ricardo the owner is so informative about the turtles and can hook you up with locals when it comes to diving or any other adventure.........swimming in the waves was a blast but is known for rip tides.........this is a place for travellers who appreciate being away from the crowds.......of all of our trips to tropical beach areas this strip of beach and coastline ranks #1 or #2 maybe behind the whitsunday islands off the coast of australia.......the corner unit which is two levels is a must..........ventanas al mar is well run, clean, and quiet..........the only place to stay on cozumel

My wife and I spotted this place last year and decided to try it this year. At first I was having second thoughts since this place sits completely alone on a 10 mile stretch of incredible pristine beach. I sometimes like to mix it up a bit with the party crowd so was thinking maybe this was a mistake. It took about a day until I decided this place is really the only way to go in Cozumel. Try it and you'll never go back to the other side of the island. You really do have the beach to yourself. I suggest having a rental car because you will need to go in town at night to eat or party. All the beach clubs close at dark. The drive into town along what must be one of the most beautiful roads in the world is not a chore, I looked forward to the drive. Hotel is clean, neat, and they are extremely friendly. Evan, the manager, was professional and always checking to see if there was anything he could do for us. Coco, the guy who does all the odd-jobs around the place is a trip. Always seems to be waiting up for you to come home like a parent. Always brought a smile to me to see him sitting on the hammock when my wife and I came home from a night out.
Cannot beat the price, $90.00 a night in high season which includes a full breakfast cooked to your liking. My wife and I had a second floor room. One cool thing is that we could feel the mist of the waves breaking on the rocks below our room while we were in bed if we left our slider open. I travel the world on business and must say this place is one the neatest places I've been to.
If I had to point out the negatives I'd say that the lack of a TV to get the news was one (though many would consider this a bonus). Lack of nightime entertainment close by may be bothersome to others. There is no AC but having it never crossed our minds since nighttime temps were in the low 70's in late Feb and the wind off of the ocean blows right thru your room if you want it to. My wife and I were scuba diving every day so again, we had to drive around the island to the dive boats but we had an open jeep and the drive was a joy each and every time.
I could go on and on about this place but will not because I do not want the place to get popular and change.
Good time for sure

Most people have not heard of this place that is right next to Coconuts on the other side of the island. (the side with no electricity) I first visited Ventanas Al Mar in February 2004. I absolutely fell in love with this place! We had two ocean view rooms on the same level as the suites for $75 a night. The rooms are neatly decorated with mexican wood furniture, ceramic tile, white walls and large sliding glass doors opening to the oversized balconies. Views are incredible overlooking the cliffs. The couple that run the place, Veronica & Ricardo make the stay so welcoming like a bed & breakfast. We were served a delicious full breakfast with the choice of eating in our rooms or eating at tables out in the sand near the lobby. We opted to dig our toes in the sand. :) The beach here is like no other place on the island - truly incredible. But most of the year - the waves are too strong to swim in. The wind generators never went out anytime we were there. This is the perfect place for romantic, ultimate seclusion as very few people venture over to the beach area here. Hearing the waves crashing into the cliffs at night is amazing.

I loved it so much that I returned there in October 2004 and stayed in Suite #1 for $130 a night. I HIGHLY advice to try this one out - this suite is two levels - with a spiral staircase that connects to the upstairs bedroom. Downstairs is a futon, dining area and kitchenette. Both levels have huge balconies with PERFECT views of the sunrise.

I went back to Cozumel again for New Year's Eve (2005) but they were all booked up. When I arrived - I was given a hug by Veronica and she remembered me from previous visits. They are working on building an observation deck beside the hotel and plan to give nighttime turtle watching tours during nesting season. This used to be the primary location for the turtle hatchery - but now they keep the eggs at Punta Sur.

I am happy to tell you that I'm returning to Cozumel on March 18, 2005 and will be staying at Ventanas Al Mar for two of my nights. If Ventanas is booked then stay in town at Palapas Amaranto instead for another truly unique experience.

My only negative comment about Ventanas - and it didn't bother me too bad...was the bathrooms are very small. I didn't spend much time in there though but if you expect a luxury bathroom then forget it. It's small & simple. The rooms themselves are quite large along w/ big balconies. The beds were nice & comfy and everything was very clean.

The resident dogs - Taco, Tequila & Margarita belong to Coconuts - next door. They're very friendly but tend to jump on kids at first. Be sure to go next door to Coconuts & tell Gustabo & Kuko that Kelly sent you there. :) Enjoy the cliffside tables at Coconuts!
