We stayed at the Riu Tequila between 24th June - 8th July 2008, and we loved it!! A few minor glitches which I will go into in a moment, but overall a brilliant holiday.....The hotel itself is stunning, the reception is gorgeous, the rooms are spotless, and resort is really good too....We flew with Thomson and they were really good, both flights were really good-on time, lot's of legroom and a great selection of films to watch. Check in etc, all great too.
A few pointers which really helped us-I strongly suggest that you buy mosquito plug-in's for your room and have them plugged in AT ALL TIMES because you WILL get bitten when your over there, and these made our room a 'bite free zone'.
You do not need to take beach towels with you as the hotel provide them everyday for you.
We had the impression off the website that men need to wear formal clothes for evening meal, so we took shirts and trousers with us to wear at night.....This is wrong-the only rule is that the men can't wear vests in the restaurants at night, any other time is fine.
Do NOT buy trips from the Thomson reps as they will rip you off!! At the end of our welcome meeting the tried to get the guests to stay behind and book trips. This is because they earn commission. If you turn left out of the hotel and walk 100 metres, there are 2 stalls there selling trips at half the price for the exact same trips. However, I recommend that you book with the stall furthest away from the hotel as the guys nearest seem a bit dodgy-although our dolphin trip was fine when we booked with them.
The food is really good, however the lunch menu is a BIG let down, as it's clearly an after thought to them, as its the same thing everyday. The themed meal nights in the restuarant are ok, but the Mexican night is a bit rubbish. As good as the food is, it does get a little repetitive, but thats to be expected if your staying all inclusive for 2 weeks.
The cleaners and the maintenance guys work so hard to make it the gorgeous place that it is, and the reception staff are really friendly. However, people go on about the animation staff on here, and we really don't see what the fuss is about. We never knew that there were daytime activities on in the daytime until we seen the activities board in reception in our 2nd week!! The animation staff never came round the bar side of the pool when we were there, so we never knew what was going on in our first week.
We went over to Yucatan some days to go to the beach, and we ended up going to the pool there most of our second week as the atmosphere is generally better, and the evening entertainment is a lot better too-if you stay in the Tequila every night, then be prepared to have the agadoo and hokey cokey ringing down your ears for the holiday. Which is great if you have kids and the kids seem to really like it, but over at the Yucatan, the focus more on entertaining both adults and kids.
5th Avenue is a really nice place, loads of shops, bars and restaurants to browse around. We went there a few times on a night out and had a good night each time we went. If you are a gay couple, like we are, then will find it very friendly in 5th Avenue, with even one gay bar which we found, which was alright.
We did 3 excursions while we were there, which were Xel-Ha, Dolphin Discovery, and Cichen Itza. All 3 were really good. Xel-Ha was amazing!! The actual place is stunning-it took my breath away at how beautiful it was when you first start snorkelling, its just amazing.....Dolphin Discovery is what you'd expect, and its really good. Chichen Itza was very interesting too, but be prepared for the 3 hour drive there and back, but it is a very good day out....
I'm aware that this review may sound a bit negative, but these are only minor things that do not really affect your holiday experience. I would definately recommend this place to anyone, and wouldn't thnk twice about staying in a Riu hotel again...
