The great thing about reviews on Trip Advisor is there is always some truth about the negatives. The same holds true for The Tides. If you are a frequenter of SLH hotels, Four's, Mandarin's etc. you expect 5 star service, food, accom. for 5 star prices.
Its close, but isn't a Gold Lister yet.
The positive's:
Beautiful grounds. All that you read about it is true for the layout, and you do feel like you've found your own paradise within the jungle. Pool and beach area are clean, infinity pool and pool area sexy, well manicured, and peaceful. Its the Mexican Riviera, so the beach isn't The Nurse's beach in Kaui or Pink Sand beach in the Bahamas....its got some rocky patches, but its the way the beaches are on this stretch, not the hotels fault.
Also saw a prior guest say jet skis are everywhere....yes true, but again, you're on a beach at a resort area....can't blame the hotel trying to make money renting jet skis.
Rooms are spacious, clean, comfortable King bed, great bathroom- Molton Brown products (although is that really Molton Brown body lotion or just the bottle). Killer outdoor shower, the plunge pool is a great touch and the outdoor set up is spacious and comfortable. Also about as private as I've seen. We all know whats going on with outdoor showers and pluge pools and I've seen rooms with one on top of another with some screen seperating one pool from another. Not the case at the Tides....nice set up.
Food is as advertised. Best I had in Playa...great chef. Food can be real iffy at most beach resorts I've been to, but not here.
The Negs you've read in other reviews:
First off I didn't book the luxury room w/a private butler. I would recommend doing this and paying the extra $ 150-200 a night if you want 5 star service. A number of times I had to call and ask 2-3x for water, to have my plunge pool temp turned up, on the jets to be turned on. Room Service took forever.
You do hear the construction, it does start early, but its really not that bad. You do get a sewer smell...My bungalow was close to it, but again, its not that bad. You're in the jungle so there's bugs, duh! Had little lizards running all over the place and they make it in the room sometimes and had a flying beetle or cochroach fly into the mosquito net, but you have to expect that.
I scuba dive and had a personal guide. I paid for it, but the extra $50-$100 I spent gave me a personal cenote dive and the aquatic guide is knowledgable. He will customize your activities. As with anything that is private or customized you have to pay and that should be no surprise to you.
Meals are expensive, for Mexico way high, but the food is great, and for this type of resort, not uncommon.
The one thing I would correct if I was management is trying to upsell guests on water, and tequila. You order 2 bottles of water and a shot of tequila they had you taste test and before you know it you just dropped $150. That's just crazy and a gouge job. I didn't appreciate that at all. They also all went to the United Airlines Premiere school of service. Yes, yes, yes, anything anytime...but ask for something a little out of the ordinary and its not today, or its not operating today...etc. They really do try and I'm just nitpicking for those of us who really appreciate the little touches and true 5-star service.
If you're looking for a romantic getaway--relaxation, seclusion, with a lot of luxuries and a unique jungle type location, I recommend The Tides. If you're a penny pincher or thinking this is Mexico's version of The Ritz in Dubai, pass.
