“Safe? Not Entirely. Worth it? Definitely.”
First and foremost, if you're afraid of heights - this will definitely be a challenge for you. I'm the type that typically can't handle a 7-foot step ladder. So why did I choose to go on a tour with zip lines? Well, perhaps I'm a moron.
Either way, I went on this with a group of about 10 people and I think all of us had the same reaction -- easily the most memorable part of our week long vacation.
Looking at other reviews - you'll see complaints about the ATVs. Are they old and decrepit? Yes...but they all worked. And quite honestly, a new ATV wouldn't hold its value long in this environment. Mine worked well and accelerated nicely, even though it looked beat up. What can one expect? You take very poor, dusty roads all day - it's not going to look mint long. Yes - there is little tread on some - but the ATV tour never goes off-road. There are these funny little paved/gravel roads that lead into the jungle that wouldn't require much for tread anyway. And none of us had trouble with control.
And in no way am I an experienced rider. Though I didn't tell the guides this - I had never before ridden a four-wheeler - not once - and I felt in complete control. I will admit I expected a little bit more challenging of a ride, but it was fun. I had to force myself to stop smiling to keep my teeth from getting coated in dust.
The zip lines. What can I say - this was a huge challenge for me with a great payoff. Like I mentioned earlier, a small step ladder makes my knees shake. The first zipline requires about a 35-foot climb up a rickety aluminum ladder to get to a little platform. There's no safety line on this climb - if you fall, well, you're in trouble. But if you're in fair shape - you can handle it. I was so happy to get off the ladder and down the zipline that I almost forgot to enjoy the ride.
The second one was better because no climbing was involved. Also, it required a bit of skill to jump out off the platform in a certain way to avoid the ridge below. One of the reviewers complained about this as being a problem with the tour - I thought it made it more challenging. I mean - isn't that the point of an "adventure" tour?
The third and final zip line is the doozy. I'm guessing about a 40 or 50 foot climb up a rudimentary tree ladder. Basically just rungs nailed into the tree - it's a pretty steep climb - but honestly, I felt more safe on this ladder than the aluminum one. And again - I was just relieved to get off the platform and down the zip line. Though I'm terrified of heights - this was a good experience for me. Sure - probably not much of an accomplishment for most - but I felt like I really achieved something in an effort to overcome my fears.
Following the ATV ride and zip lines - you're sweaty, dirty, dusty and the adrenaline is pumping. So what better way to end the tour than with a jump into the underground cenote. The cool water was a welcomed experience given the sunny 85-90 degree weather. Then you dry off - and head back down the dusty trail on the ATVs.
About the negative comments from other people. One guy claimed this was very challenging for someone in good shape. I don't know what this guy considers good shape - but I think he needs to hit the treadmill more. We had a varied group - from very fit to not-so-much, and none of us had a problem with any portion of the tour (again - minus the fear of heights some of us were facing).
Otherwise, there were some comments about the tour guides being rude. Yeah - they will tease you a little - but it's meant in jest. It wasn't bullying by any means. The main tour guide (forget his name) has a good personality and was very knowledgeable of the tour.
We had one person in the group who got slightly injured and seemed to be upset about it, but it was because she didn't listen closely to the guide. In the cenote, you had to jump far enough out to miss the sharp rocks beneath the water. Well, she did a funny little leap that wasn't far enough out - nor did she position her legs correctly - and she slightly scraped her leg. No blood or anything like that - she was fine.
That being said - I'm surprised if someone hasn't been hurt before. It's just the risk you take when climbing and sliding down zip lines is involved. But - again - I'm glad I did it. We were all very pumped after the trip. It was fun and challenging - and something you can't do just anywhere. Also, it was the perfect activity to follow up with beers afterward.
