We booked this tour through Best Day at our resort, Grand Sunset Princess. Our guide was Elias, and he was great.

We were picked up at 6:45. It took about an hour to get to the pitstop, where we signed papers and were given coffee and cookies. Then about another 1/2 hour to get to Coba.

We were with Elias about 1/2 hour, where he gave a tour of a smaller ruin and ball court area. Very interesting. Then we had the option of renting a bike taxi for $10 or a bicycle for $3. We did the taxi and our daughter rode the bike. Some of our group chose to walk and it was FAR! We climbed all the way to the top. Awesome experience!! Seems too dangerous to be allowed. I was so afraid someone would fall, but none did.

Then we were driven down a long long rode to the next area. We were given a locker to take off everything but our swim suits and shoes. It was a long trek through the jungle to a Mayan ceremony. (We chose not to participate.) Then it was the repell. OH MY! Scariest part. There is a hole in the ground with bannisters built around it. You repel on a rope down into a very, very deep hole into water below. Or you can be assisted on the rope (which is what I did.) A man is waiting below with an inner tupe that you land in. The water is cold, but beautiful. You are in a huge cave. We stayed there maybe 20 minutes. To get out, you can either be lifted or climb a long rope ladder.

After that, it's another trek through the jungle to the zip line over a lake. They don't give you time to change your mind!!! I can't believe I did it!! You hold a stick in your hand that is your break.

Another trek back to the front, where you can swim in the lake or kayak. We chose to cool off in the lake. There is a high deck the kids jumped off of.

Then you are served a lunch. Very good! And then relaxing in the hammocks. Heaven!!

We went back to the pitstop, and had tequila shots and bought our CD of all the pictures they took of us.

We got back to our hotel around 6. It was a long full day, and we loved it. I highly recommend this tour!!!

“Jungle Tour - Too commercialized and the kayak/snorkel was a joke”

A group of us did the jungle tour nohoch from Cancun. The drive was far. We started the day by kayaking from the lagoon into the ocean. The waves were big, but we are all experienced kayakers so it was fine. The snorkeling was very bad. The fact that the fresh water from the river mixed with the ocean water creates a poor visibility condition. We ended our trip with snorkeling in 2 cenotes. I believe not all cenotes are alike, the one we saw at Salvatica was so much better since it was more "open" and you can zipline right into it.

Overall, I believe this is a bit of a tourist trap as it was one of the most pricy tours we booked. We also spent over $100 purchasing photos.

We got back to Cancun tired. I would only recommend this tour for younger crowds who are staying in the Riviera Maya. It's too far from Cancun.

“Coba Mayan Encounter - Too Far, Too Expensive”

We did enjoyed the whole day tour. If you are styaing in Cancun, this tour starts at about 7am and ends at around 7pm. We did many other tours in quinta roo and thought this one was over-priced. The zip was extremely short, the rappell was very quick, the canoe was almost a joke, and the hike was too difficult in warm weather. For the same amount of money, go to xel ha/tulum, or Xcaret. If you have never been on organized tours, you may enjoy this since they cram so many activities into one day, and none of them was REALLY all that fun. But you do get to see and do a lot in one shot. If you just want to cross things off your list of things to do, then this is the right tour for you. Otherwise, consider something that is not more than 100 miles away from Cancun. We also did the Salvatica a day before and thought it was amazinG!

“Over Priced - too tired Coba Mayan Encounter”

We had to wake up very early on our vacation to catch this tour. I went with my wife and we spent two full hours waiting for and picking up other tourists along the way until we reached Coba. If your hotel is in Cancun, you might want to reconsider this.

If your hotel is in Rivera Maya, such as Tulum, then your travel time will be a lot less than 2 hours of picking up other tourists.

The zip was only 20 seconds, the rappell down 60 ft was brief. You kayak on a pond, and hike when it's rainy. You watched a Maya show that is performed every single day, and food was just ok. You can rent a bike at Coba, we recommend the taxi since it was very hot.

We got back to the hotel around 7pm, starving and tired. It's over-rated, not worth your money, you can go to Coba yourself for $ 5 admission. Just take the bus or hire a taxi if you live around Tulum.

“A highlight of our trip”

We chose Alltournative because it came highly recommended by a friend of mine who works in the travel industry, and we were not disappointed.
We chose the Mayan Encounter tour and had a wonderful time. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is in reasonably good shape and able to handle rappelling, canoeing, etc. Our tour group included 12 people (6 Americans and 6 Dutch) and a Dutch tour guide named Colin who was fabulous.
We had a fun group, and a great guide. I felt like we got to learn something about the Mayan culture and got to see a part of Mexico we might not have otherwise explored.
My favorite part of the trip was rappelling into the cenote. The cave was huge and contained water so clear and pure that you could see all the way to the bottom at the points where the sun came through the top. Absolutely amazing. The lunch was delicious, and we also enjoyed climbing to the top of Coba even though it was incredibly hot by the time we got there.

A few tips: you can leave your camera at the "base camp" where lunch is served, but I would recommend keeping it with you unless you are really paranoid about losing or dropping it. The picture packages they sell are quite pricey, but if you bring your own camera the only part you can't take it on is when you rappel down into the cenote.

Be aware that the order in which you do the activities may vary from what is listed on the web site.

Finally, about sunscreen: I am one of the fairest-skinned people in the world, and the fact you couldn't wear sunscreen was not a big deal to me. Much of the walk through the jungle was in the shade -- the only times I needed sunscreen were at Coba and while canoeing, and, since we did those activities after the cenote, one could go ahead and wear sunscreen by that point. If you burn as easily as I do, I would suggest putting on some biodegradable sunscreen before you leave your hotel, and then bring some along for those portions of the trip where you may be able to use it. You might also consider bringing along a lightweight long-sleeved shirt that provides some sun protection, along with a hat.
