You must do the Mayan Encounter while in Playa. The most amazing experience of my life. Book online or at office on 5th Ave. For only $105 you get transportation from hotel in air conditioned van with english speaking guide, Entrance and guide at Coba (Go here not Tulum), kayaking, jungle hike, swimming in a cenote after a cleansing ritual by the mayans, a delicious lunch prepared by local mayan women, rappelling, ziplining and did I mention a shot of tequila at the end of the day. Guillermo was the best guide ever and very reassuring when I was scared to zip line. You must do this. Very professional company!

“Coba/Mayan Encounter - AWESOME!!”

My husband and I almost did not get to go on this tour. The agency we booked through (Olympus Tours) gave us such a hassle with wrong reservations, etc, we almost decided not to even go on a tour while we were on vacation. But we are so glad we ended up going. We were so happy when we were picked up in the morning to learn that it was NOT Olympus that was actually taking us on the tour but "Alltournative". We had a small group of only 8, all american except for two french girls. Our guide (Jorge) was exceptional!! He spoke Englise, did french translation for us as well as spanish with the locals.

Almost the whole ride from Playa del Carmen to Tulum & Coba, he was educating us with stories and information about the Mayans and the Yucatan.

Climbing the temple at Coba was an amazing experience and learning all about the ruins was very very interesting. Then Jorge took us to swim in the Cenote...where we rowed through a little bit of lagoon and walked through the jungle to get to where we would climb down underground and swim. There was a small ceremony (of respect since we were about to swim in the pure waters underground) and the Cenote was beautiful, cool, crystal clear water.

Then we went to the Mayan village where we had lunch, went ziplining and repelled. I was a little scared of the repelling part of the day but Jorge was very very patient with me and helped me gather up the guts to go ahead and do it.

All in all, it was an amazing day and a great experience. I would 100% recommend AllTourNative to anyone who is vacationing in the Playa del Carmen/Tulum area. Also, if I am ever there again, I will go straight through AllTourNative to book my tour with them rather than going through Olympus. I did not know better before, but I do now.

Thanks Jorge & Alltournative for an amazing day!!

“Tourist Trap”

What a tourist trap. We booked our tours online directly through alltournative. We checked out their website, and found videos of the tours on youtube. We also researched the reviews on Tripadvisor. Despite a few negative reviews, we still booked 2 tours with them. We went to Coba Mayan Encounter first. We really enjoyed Coba and would recommend anyone visiting the Rivera Maya to visit one of the ruins in Mexico, such as Coba. If you are traveling with a large group, just book a private van on your own, I believe the Coba admission is less than $10. When the tour was over, we felt that it was overpriced and wanted to cancel our second tour on the 4 x 4 but was told that it was too late to cancel, so we went on a jungle tour. Again, this is more of a tourist trap than anything else. It's a tour that's easy to sell because it was filled with activities, but it was really not all that fun. We did enjoyed ourselves, but we now know that somethings sound good on paper to draw you in. It's a big business, and that's how they make their money.

“Maya Encounter/Coba”

My husband and I went on this day trip and loved it. We were staying between Playa Del Carmen and Tulum, so it was close to our hotel. Not, sure I would reccomend it if you were coming from Cancun. But, from where we were it was a great day trip.

We decided to do this trip so that we could do a lot of activities in one day. We wanted to do some activities but still have a honeymoon so this arrangement gave us that opporunity. We were picked up at 8:00. And then we went to another hotel to pick up some more people. The problem was the hotel was really large, with many lobbies and the other passengers were not where they were supposed to be. The guide spent a lot of time calling them and touching bases with everyone to make sure he found everyone before we left. But, if you are at a large resort make sure you know where you are being picked up.

We then drove to Coba. We loved the fact that we got there early we enjoyed the ruins and as we were leaving the tour buses were dropping off. I was so happy that we decided to go with a small personal group and not the large tour bus! We then went canoeing, it was not a kayak. We went across a little pond hiked a ways and then did the one zip line. I have heard a lot of people say that it was short and yes it seems short, but compared to many other zip lining that we have done it was actually a long zip line. We then continued to hike in the jungle watching the monkeys above us. Yes, monkeys! Not in a cage but in the jungle above you. We then reppeled through a sink hole into a cenote. The water was refreshing and a nice break from the heat.

I thought our guide was frinendly and nice. We had a person wearing open heel shoes in our group, not the brightest idea. She was really upset about most of the trip and the hiking. I thought our guide trully proved himself on how well he handled a very difficult situation.

Things to consider:

Bring a snack, we did not eat lunch until 3 and were hungry.

Wear biodegradeable sunscreen or no sunscreen at all. This is there request but also a common sense. You are going to go into a cenote that people drink out of. They do not have fancy purifying systems in the jungle.

Wear shoes that you can hike or climb in!!

They do offer to sell you pictures. You do not have to buy them and if you choose they are expensive. One picture for $15 or a cd for $45. The pictures were really good though and if you value your pictures it is an option. Or, take your own pictures.

We booked this tour through Best Day at our resort, Grand Sunset Princess. Our guide was Elias, and he was great.

We were picked up at 6:45. It took about an hour to get to the pitstop, where we signed papers and were given coffee and cookies. Then about another 1/2 hour to get to Coba.

We were with Elias about 1/2 hour, where he gave a tour of a smaller ruin and ball court area. Very interesting. Then we had the option of renting a bike taxi for $10 or a bicycle for $3. We did the taxi and our daughter rode the bike. Some of our group chose to walk and it was FAR! We climbed all the way to the top. Awesome experience!! Seems too dangerous to be allowed. I was so afraid someone would fall, but none did.

Then we were driven down a long long rode to the next area. We were given a locker to take off everything but our swim suits and shoes. It was a long trek through the jungle to a Mayan ceremony. (We chose not to participate.) Then it was the repell. OH MY! Scariest part. There is a hole in the ground with bannisters built around it. You repel on a rope down into a very, very deep hole into water below. Or you can be assisted on the rope (which is what I did.) A man is waiting below with an inner tupe that you land in. The water is cold, but beautiful. You are in a huge cave. We stayed there maybe 20 minutes. To get out, you can either be lifted or climb a long rope ladder.

After that, it's another trek through the jungle to the zip line over a lake. They don't give you time to change your mind!!! I can't believe I did it!! You hold a stick in your hand that is your break.

Another trek back to the front, where you can swim in the lake or kayak. We chose to cool off in the lake. There is a high deck the kids jumped off of.

Then you are served a lunch. Very good! And then relaxing in the hammocks. Heaven!!

We went back to the pitstop, and had tequila shots and bought our CD of all the pictures they took of us.

We got back to our hotel around 6. It was a long full day, and we loved it. I highly recommend this tour!!!
