I spent the first two weeks of December 2007 in Mexico, dividing my time between Akumal (3 days) and Tulum (8 days). My travel companion had bailed at the last minute, so I was unexpectedly alone on this trip. The staff at Las Ranitas were a big part of what made my stay so enjoyable. Keep in mind as you read this review that I was there during the off-season, and it seemed to me that the town was half empty at best.
The beach at LR is fabulous. I spent many days walking up and down the beach for hours and I do think that LR has the best strech of beach. They also take great care to keep the beach raked and cleaned (like many beautiful places in this world, the garbage from the sea is an ever-present problem). For future visitors, there will be plenty of sun shelters, which is very important to me. They happened to be rebuilding the huts during these two weeks but it really wasn't too much of an interference.
The accommodations were really nice. I had booked a garden room (the cheapest variety) and was upgraded to an oceanfront room (bungalow 10). I thought it was great - the sheets were soft, the bed wasn't too hard, and from the bed and shower I could see the ocean. There wasn't any AC, but even though it was pretty hot (high 80s) there was always a breeze and the fans did the job. Bugs were pretty much nonexistant. The shower uses salt water so I'm not sure I ever was clean. ;)
The restaurant's food is pretty good. The prices in the Tulum hotel zone are outrageous for what you get in general, and the food at LR was pretty tasty. I had some delicious meals (mole chicken and the whole fish especially) for dinner, and the lunch menu had a lot of healthy options. The views of the beach make a stunning setting.
The staff, which has been at issue in many of the posts, were incredibly helpful and were always looking out for me. LR is much better for couples than a single, so the staff's constant (but not bothersome) attention was appreciated by me, who often sat on the beach watching 10 romance novels unfold at one time. They gave unsolicited recommendations on things I could do as I passed through reception. They were very helpful in rearranging travel plans.
There is no party scene at LR. Other places have live music, open air movies, salsa lessons, DJs, active bars, etc. You will not have that at LR, but thankfully everything is close by.
I never saw the pool and I was told there was paddle tennis, but I never saw that either. With such a spectacular beach, there was no need. There is ample parking, a nice and open common room for sitting, computer facilities, and a pretty big library of books.
Other notes on Tulum -- I loved the food at Mezzanine! My highest recommendation for dining -- setting and quality were fabulous. I also took yoga classes every day at Maya Tulum. They have a weekly schedule which is very helpful as you plan the trip. The teachers weren't tough at all, which is good for beginners, but I wish a more challenging class was offered. It is $10/class but you should inquire about an unlimited pass. I didn't know until the end and would have saved $$$. A side trip to Coba was incredible. I went very early in the morning and was able to have the site to myself. And the ruins at Tulum -- don't forget your bathing suit and go as early as possible to beat the tour buses. Swimming beneath the ruins is rightfully a tourist hilight. The view of the stars in Tulum on the beach at night is incredible. I ended every night marveling at the view.
I hope I can return to Tulum in the future, and I would definitely choose Las Ranitas again. It is mellow, the rooms are quite comfortable, and it occupies the best stretch of beach. What more could I ask for??
