“Mediocre experience for a high price”

Zamas

My girlfriend and I had already been around the Yucatan coast for a week before arriving at Zamas so had a pretty good idea of what to expect for what you pay. At $140 a night, Zamas was the most expensive of the hotels we stayed in but was the worst experience:
- There was no air-conditioning which was extremely uncomfortable at night
- The mosquito nets on the windows had holes in them which meant we both got severly bitten each night
- There was only one 10W lightbulb in our large room which meant we needed a torch to find anything in the room
- The bathroom smelt of sewage
- All the staff in the restaurant seemed indifferent to providing any kind of service

This wouldn't have been so bad but having eaten at other hotels, we saw what kind of place we could have stayed at instead and were left feeling a little short-changed. My advice, if you do decide to come to Tulum, stay somewhere else.

We loved our stay, staff and restaurant at Zamas!
The location and food were heavenly.
I cannot rave on more about the restaurant. We ate the Gambas prawns every night.
Highly recommended!

“Loud and expensive”

We stayed at Zamas for three nights with our 1-year old son and were very underwhelmed by the experience. The rates were comparable with most other hotels/cabanas on the Tulum hotel strip, but not worth being woken up every night (too many times to count) by loud trucks, motorcycles, etc., and the crappy bands playing at the overpriced and mediocre restaurant. The beach cabanas are literally less than 10 feet from the busy road.

My wife and I are used to camping, and didn't mind the salt water showers, the periodic lack of electricity, and lack of any power outlets in our cabana (good thing we charged our camera battery before arriving). The fact that our room was never really clean would also have been quite tolerable, if not for the relatively high rates.

Overall, the experience was like extremely overpriced car camping (though car camping usually doesn't requre schlepping your gear a hundred yards while dodging traffic). That said, it was nice having a cabana on the beach where our child could nap while we enjoyed the beach.

After a couple of scouting trips, we decided that a future trip would be much better spent a little farther south, where the beaches are MUCH nicer and farther from the road, and the prices are comparable. Perhaps Posada La Mar, Hemingway, etc. If you go in the low season and have a rental car, it would probably be worth spending part of a day checking out the different options before settling down rather than making sight-unseen non-refundable reservations. If looking for an off-the-beaten-path rustic hangout on a beautiful beach, I have to believe that there are better options somwhere else than the Tulum strip - Ecuador or Belize perhaps?

“Paradise found”

Zamas

Apr 27, 2008

This was my second stay in Zamas. We stayed in Cabana number 10 across the road. I just love Zamas: the quirky rooms, the colourful bathrooms, the heavenly restaurant, the pelicans fishing in the sea.
It is not a luxurious place but it is peaceful and relaxing. When I feel a bit miserable, I just think back of Zamas.
