“Apathetic Staff - revised”

Cocos Cabanas

Since writting my review last week,"Apathetic Staff", which I also sent to the management of Copal, I was contacted by a very nice and responsive customer service manager named Maria . I was very impressed by her interest and openess to my feedback, concerns and criticisms. Maria immediately called the owner and made on the spot changes to rectify the things I talked to her about and wrote about. Maria was genuinely interseted in making sure these conditions did not continue and I was assured they have been addressed and changed. Due to her eagerness to take care of the problems immediately, I will definetely be returning for a stay there in the fall as I really liked the place except for the problems I outlined. To me it is always a good sign when management is wanting to hear what the customers have to say. I can't wait to get back.

Cocos Cabanas

Stayed at Cocos Cabanas for the last 2 days of our week long Yucatan trip. I chose this hotel because it was on the beach and I had read wonderful reviews here. Unfortunately, the experience was different for us. The reasons my husband and I did not like it are:

Location - it is a 15 minute drive away from nearest city/bus station/stores/etc, so we had to get a taxi all the time and it was $10 each way. If you rent a car, this may not be a problem (we like to take the bus to get to a place and then walk around). For a cabana on the beach - it really wasn't on the beach, it is a few minutes away. And the beach was not good - rocky & dirty - and no comparison to the beach in Tulum.

Rooms - we stayed in 3 different places/hotels during this trip and Cocos was the only room we did not like. I felt claustrophobic. The cabanas were painted dark, bad colors and were very close, although there was some privacy. The place looked really old and the bathroom was really showing age. From the bed, there was direct view of the old toilet and that didn't help at all.

Service - the couple running the place were helpful, although not up to what I had come to expect having stayed at a hotel in Tulum and another in Valladolid. They charged us $2 every time they called the cab for us. But they also dropped us at the airport early in the morning for a charge of $35, which was very helpful given ADO bus service didn't start that early and a reasonable price.

I would have found another hotel, but I had paid the full amount when I booked through www.travel-center.com. The other hotels we stayed at were less expensive and much better, will write reviews on them too.

“Better than we Ever Imagined”

This was our first destination off the plane. I had imagined how lovely it would be BUT IT WAS MUCH MORE! We were greeted by Silvia and Helmut with such warmth and hospitality as we made our way down the path in the early evening. The restaurant & bar are so comfortable outside and Helmut is a great chef. The food is fresh and varied and they're happy to cater to your preferences.
The cabanas are perfect. Beautifully designed circular structures with artistically created thatched roofs...nice little bathroom, simple and functional....Good ventilation.
The hosts are so helpful and interesting, too.
The spectacular beach is about a 2 minute walk from Coco's -- no crowds, just lovely fine sand. Sadly, alot of garbage has washed up: some of it is fairly interesting --- tiny mussels growing on plastic bottles; we found a note in a bottle!.... but what a pleasure to walk an hour and meet only 20 or so other folks enjoying this paradise...
Coco's is superb. The driving directions one of the other reviewers gave are perfect....

“A wonderful time”

My wife and I stayed in this quiet little gem for five nights in December. It is far from the Americanized Cancun and Playa del Carmen. The comfortable canbanas run around 60-70$ per night and include breakfast. It is not directly on the beach, but it is only a 1-minute walk away from some fabulous, mostly unspoiled Carribean beach. It is a bit rocky, but you can swim. The restaurant has a small but wonderful selection -- how can you go wrong with deliciously pepared fresh fish, well cooked by the regular staff. The owner, Sylvia is a true angel and delightful company.

Cocos Cabanas is NOT north of Puerto Morelos, as one reviewer said, it is about 25 kilometers south on Xcalacoco beach near Punte Bete. It is roughly between mile 298 and 297 on Highway 307. As you drive South on the highway from Cancun, get in the left lane just after you pass the Capitan Lafitte resort turnoff. Soon you will see a red Coca-Cola / Cristal bottling plant sign on your left, and when you come to the TOPES (speedbumps in the road to slow you down), get in the extreme left lane and turn left at the SECOND opening. It's easy to turn left because the oncoming traffic has topes too! Follow the paved road to a rough dirt road and follow the signs.

You won't be disappointed in this lovely setting, unless the party lifestyle of Cancun and Playa are what you came for. Good restaurants and snorkeling in Puerto Morelos, too, which is not far away.

“Coco's is great”

First, Coco's Cabanas is NOT in Tulum, where Trip Advisor groups it. But who cares? We liked the isolation at Punta Bete, which is just north of Playa del Carmen. The cabanas are perfect. Each is a different color and all are round, with palapa roofs. The round theme extends to the shower, open save for a slanted half-wall. This place is a perfect antidote to the giant all-inclusive resorts. Sadly, the proprietors are leaving soon. Coco's is a manifestation of their personalities, so who knows what it will be like in the future? For now, it's a great bargain and about as charming as a hotel can be. Add great food and fine tequila, with a beautiful garden to gaze at while you dine. Ah!
