First, let's talk about what Cabanas Tulum is: the cheapest place (by far!) on one of the most stunning stretches of beach I've ever visited. We took many beach walks and looked at some of the other places we had considered staying, places that were hundreds more dollars per night than CT is... and our $70/night (we went the week before Easter, the most expensive time to go) view was better than any other place!
We had the end room, which was very private. We had a little table and chairs, and rented a hammock. We stopped in Playa del Carmen and Walmart and bought a cooler, beer, and some snacks, and sat on the patio and enjoyed our amazing view. The water in front of CT is fairly rough, though, so we did spend a day farther north at the beach in front of La Vita e Bella, because they rent beach chairs and the water is calmer.
Now, let's talk about what CT isn't: clean. Our room was so filthy that , if we had more money, we would've left. Immediately. We have traveled to many places much poorer than Mexico, and I can honestly say that this is the dirtiest room I have ever stayed in. They need to get new housekeepers, and, had I known about the filth, would've brought some disposable wipes. The walls could use a good wipe down. The sheets seemed clean though, and we hardly spent any time in the room. There was also a serious ant problem, and when we complained, a guy came over with a spray can of RAID, which also caused cockroaches (big guys!) to fall out of the cracks dead, as well. The best part? The guy who sprayed didn't even clean up the dead bugs!
The moral of the story: if you're on a budget, like us, this is probably the only place on this fabulous stretch of beach that you can afford. I'm thankful that CT is around, or we would've had to stay in Tulum Town, which wouldn't be nearly as fun. However, come with a sense of humor, and stay out of the room as much as possible!
I recommend the restaurant at Zamas, Que Fresco!, for dinner; everything is fresh and gourmet, and we had some of the best meals there that we've ever had. On Sunday nights La Zebra has a salsa party, which was fun to watch, as there were some REALLY good dancers there.
Finally, if you're heading to this area and debating whether to rent a car or not, I would recommend renting a car. There's a lot to see/do that the buses just don't go to.
