My fiance and I spent four fantastic days at Shambala in Nov 2006 and have since recommended this hotel to friends. The property and casitas were very clean and the staff were friendly and helpful. This is a beautiful place to stay if you are truly looking to get away from it all. If you are even considering a property like this that I am sure you know this is not a place that offers 5-star luxury accommodations, but that is the beauty of staying someplace literally on the beach with the natural environs providing all ambiance and backdrop. Our room only contained a bed, small table, and bathroom but that was absolutely fine as you will not be spending much time in the room anyway - not when the property has many beds and chairs for lounging on the sand. Don't be surprised by the fact that you must throw away your toilet paper instead of flushing it away. (Our toilet did clog one day but it was quickly repaired.) This is the fun of staying somewhere a little off the beaten track, isn't it?
Roberto was a fantastic host - he is very fun to talk to and has a charming personality. We arrived very late on our scheduled check-in date because of issues with our flights and at first we were told by Roberto that he did not receive our reservation and he did not know who we were. I had printed and brought with us our email exchange, which jogged his memory. Apparently he wrote down an incorrect date of our arrival in his calendar. The problem was resolved quickly and we were moved to another casita (not the one we had reserved, which was absolutely fine) and given a generous discount.
Electricity is turned off in the casitas at around midnight. We were able to charge our iPods in the main hut during the day so that we could use them at night. Breakfast is typical continental style and included cereal, yogurt, some form of carbohydrate, juices, instant coffee, tea, simple fruit, and a variety of jams and spreads. Breakfast time is a good opportunity to meet other guests. Shambala Petit most definitely draws a very international crowd of interesting people just looking to relax and escape the stress of every day life.
*Don't forget to bring the bug repellant!! The first night we arrived it was rather muggy and we were practically eaten alive while we tried to sleep. The next night was much better - we never will know if coating our bodies in repellant helped or if it was the change in weather. Regardless, you do not want such annoyances ruining what could otherwise be a great experience.
We were able to borrow 2 old bikes one day (for free) and explored the other hotels in the area. After that bike ride we realized we were staying in one of the best spots in Tulum. They also have sea kayaks you can use and can help you book appointments for massages. Roberto, we miss you and will come back some day to visit once again!
